Bachar Houli - بشار حولي,

And his top 5 finish in the Jack Dyer medal really backs that up (not). Credit where credits due, Houli had a form slump and managed to pull himself out of it. I certainly wish a number of others would follow suit.

agree with this. Rarely are players 'up' for the whole season. form will always drop and peak.

Finished equal 10th this year.

Wow Bachar's thread has been quiet of late. Must mean he's getting the job done.

Thought he was impressive last night despite others getting the headlines.

Looks like his competitiveness and defence has improved a little.

Will have to with those breathing down his neck.

Agree TOO. He looked sharp last night. I like the move of him and Newman further up the ground.

Bash is wasted in defence and should play attack/wing as his accurate kicks would definitely convert to goals.

In for big year is Houli. I have been very impressed so far this pre-season.

Been bloody smooth so far. Like one of those fancy five blade shavers with the little conditioning strip compared to an old bic disposable.

Another one I'm really liking, amazing what a slight positional change can do.

Houli puts his speed to good use when he plays on the wing. He has a deadly left foot. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the season proper.

Yes he was good yesterday perhaps second best behind Lids. I really like his use of the ball. And with Ellis showing more good signs we won't miss him in defence.

I wouldn't call his kicking deadly. His long kicking maybe anything under 30 mt is very average, maybe if he drilled those short kicks like his long kicks it would fix the problem.

Disagree.

Between then fumbling and bumbling of the likes of Rance and Morris up back it's a godsend to have Houli back there. Ultra cool under pressure, rarely makes the wrong decision and gets us out of more bad situations in games than many probably most notice that an inferior player in the same situation probably coughs up a few goals each game through mistakes. Along with Cotchin and S.Edwards he's probably one of the best we have at the shimmy, twisting and turning and making space where there is none.

He will get a lot more attention this season though and will be interesting to see how he handles it. If anything Newman last year despite playing poorly at least took the #1 backline tag off Houli and allowed him to play freely. If Newman moves up the ground (not convinced on this move for the record, especially his fitness to play such a role) Houli is the first player back there the opposition will now go to. That's why Ellis becomes very important too.

I have had to eat my opinion just based on this pre season he has been great. i had him as a squib and an overrated left boot but things seem to have changed. Now the structures are being sorted he looks very dangerous and the Bombers must be fuming :rofl

He's great, but wait til we get to the hairy part of the season and he can't eat or drink water. It affected his form badly last year, and it'll happen again this year.

Had no impact in 2011 and not so sure it impacted him in 2012. July isn't necessarily the pointy end of the year either.

In 2011 it didn't have much of an impact, because Houli hadn't had much of an impact. 2012 it was quite noticeable, as Houli had been so excellent, both before and after. All his stats declined during his fasting period, and his impact on games was obviously lessened.

I understand religious and personal freedoms, and probably shouldn't be playing with such a sticky topic, but for a league footballer not to be able to eat before a game, you're guaranteeing a dip in your performance, just from a purely physiological point of view. And from what I understand, he can't drink water during the game! It would be impossible to keep moving at your best for a whole game without water.

I don't know if he should just be rested for games when he can't eat or drink.
