There’s whipping boys and then there’s whipping boys. I’m not claiming all criticism or even the majority is due to who he is and what he stands for. He’s an outiside player and when we lose they are the first to be abused. He and Grigg copped a fair bit over the years.

But Bachar copped abuse that was directed personally, constantly with examples of his weakness/squibness/lack of courage often being made up. His whipping had a sharper edge at times.

But I’ll retract my comment if it’s come across as too broad and labelling all criticism of Bachar being due to his religion, that’s not what was intended.

I've been pro Grigg and Houli since day one. They helped us establish ourselves as competitive unit and did the hard yards and didn't allow themselves to be overtaken by the new crop. Stoked that they both get to be premiership players.

Re: Bachar "The Finals Specialist" Houli

Bachar is a legend of this Club...cant say enough about him. Wonderful person..so proud he is Richmond.

Re: Bachar "The Finals Specialist" Houli

Great game by Bachar, quite a few times he was at the bottom of the pack forcing the ball out to a teammate, didn't show as a stat but was vital to the team.

Could quite easily have a worthy winner of the Normie

Re: Bachar "The Finals Specialist" Houli

It just shows what getting out of Essendon can do for you.

Re: Bachar "The Finals Specialist" Houli

Inspirational game. Only a player like Dusty could have jagged the Norm Smith over Bachar. Earned his immortality the hard way and nothing but respect.

Re: Bachar "The Finals Specialist" Houli

Forced a ground ball through a pack to release dusty which was huge. Great finals series from Houli strong and bold now a legend.

Baloo, that's garbage.

I've never been Houli's greatest fan. And, as I posted in round 2 or 3 this year, it's always been due to a problem of balance. In previous years, our static and constipated game plan highlighted his flaws. Fortunately, his skillset was key for the direct, attacking nature of Tigers 2017.

He plays the loose man role which can lead to a lack of accountability. But when he provides enough drive, he makes up for that. The game plan this year suddenly tipped that balance in his favour.

His kicking has always been ambitious, and he's a bit like Dusty in the hit or miss stakes. Unfortunately, as an outside player, he isn't afforded those misses as often. The game plan this year meant he could more often go long and direct (precise kicking becomes gold/turnovers less dangerous) as opposed to short kicks backwards and across the ground, where turnovers turn games. Again, this year the balance has been in his favour, despite the justified criticism that he can still turn it over painfully and concede easy goals (he was leading in this stat AFL Wide). And as good as he was in the Granny, don't think that missed switch across goal to Astbury in the first quarter which gave the Crows a mini run on, and the missed set shots didn't hurt his norm Smith chances.

He is a premiership hero. And he stood up massively on the big stage. We may not have won it without him.

But, over the course of his career, he has had genuine and legitimate criticisms due to the role he plays, and the overall balance of his strengths and weaknesses.

It's pretty disgusting to come out now and label those who criticised racist.

Especially when you look at the parallels between he and B. Ellis. Brando had just as many knockers, played a similar role, had similar weaknesses and benefited I'm a similar way from the changes this year. And didn't he cop the whipping boy status. All without being Muslim.

Poor form, Baloo.

About right CT. It's some posters schtick to revel in misery but it also appears some love the ungracious celebration.

Its interesting, I heard Mark Williams make a comment on Bachar's lack of physicality (at the time he was reported) and how he had worked on being stronger at the contest. I'm trying to find the interview/comments.

I don't think Jordan McMahon is a muslim but he was criticised more severely than Bachar IIRC. Tambling/JON, Tiva all have had much more derision. Muscles.....the list goes on.

Are there any that dislike him purely on religious grounds - undoubtedly. But they are easy to spot and simple to ignore.

I've been in the doubters camp and was blown away by his game, thought he was BOG. I saw his interview on AFL game day and couldn't have been more impressed with him, although he's always been acknowledged as a beautiful, humble man.

Well said. I think the club had the same view as a lot of supporters did that Bachar couldn't stand up in the big games. After all Yarran was meant to play in that same position, but we all know how that worked out.

He will get plaudits for his Grand Final but I think he was pretty good against Geelong in that 1st final aswell. Sucked in Essendon!

Fair enough, Baloo.
Back before it became team rule to tackle and we used to corral...the frawley and wallace years... I may have criticised both Bach and Grigga for not tackling enough, not being tough enough, being too outside.

For the life of me I still can't get over why tackling and pressure particularly in the F50, would be a revelation in any AFL coaches box?

no way Ellis was denigrated like Bash was

I hated Ellis more. Big deal, Premiership heros now, and well deserved.

Houli's AFL Game Day interview out on youtube. From about 9:50.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it. It's one of the best, most honest interviews you'll ever see. If you don't love Bash already this will do the job. Some really good info on some of the changes that the club made this year too.

Re: Bachar "Premiership Player" Houli

Houli did so much hard-ball stuff in the GF. He was a far more dimensional player against the Crows than I think I have ever seen him before. His hardness, courage, skill and leadership were all significant contributors to the Tigers smashing the Crows. A most excellent game from the beautiful man.

I call BS on you Baloo, your original post was intended to infer that the comments about Houli's playing style were religiously motivated.

You have been called out by many poster's on your ill-conceived post and are trying to weasel your way out.

Many Richmond players over the years have copped criticisms for shortcomings in their abilities and Bachar is only one of those.

Re: Bachar "Premiership Player" Houli

Call whatever you want, I’m not fussed. I used the word irrational in the original post for a reason. I should have made it more clear I wasn’t claiming all criticism was religious based. That would be a pretty stupid claim by anyone.

Re: Bachar "Premiership Player" Houli

Always put my hand up as one of his harshest critics. I feel fairly. You can't love everyone. Although right now I reckon I can. He was brilliant in the GF.

Re: Bachar "Premiership Player" Houli

Spoke very well on seven's AFL Sunday show. Spoke about the honesty sessions. Great character to have around the club.
