We have managed fine without Houli.
If anything it only strengthen my argument that he isn't "integral" to our backline!

We've managed fine because we're a good side this year. It doesn't mean we're not an improved side by having him back in (which thankfully the Richmond heirarchy agree with). So if Cotchin was out of the side and we performed fine without him, does that mean we shouldn't bring him back in because as a side we did fine? Yes I believe Houli is integral to our backline and provides the run needed that makes the side less predictable and opens up options. Yes you get caught out on the rebound sometimes but it's all about whether the benefits outweigh the negatives and in my opinion from my view of games supported by stats is that he provides plenty more opportunities moving the ball forward when he is in the side than when he isn't. We have tried other backmen to produce that role, C Ellis, Markov, Menadue, and it just hasn't worked to the same efficiency that Houli provides. I would take Houli over Broad any day of the week.

Wait a minute you're the one who posted that I make up sh!t as usual. Don't throw stones if you can't take the hits that come back at you.

Look we obviously don't see eye to eye on Houli.

I love his traits he brings especially his run and carry game but there are elements that I don't like.

Broad gives me hope looking forward that's all and I can't see the point in bringing Houli straight back in when it is clear we are doing absolutely fine without him.

Smacks of bringing Conca and Griffiths straight back in because ... who knows why we did that back then???

GO TIGES!

Re: Bachar "Back in Black & Yellow" Houli

It will be interesting who gets dropped for BH. Broad or Cellis?

Well we didn't bring Griffiths back in, he played 2 games in VFL and injured his shoulder. From what I've read Conca will be finding his way back via reserves if he recovers in time. So maybe we have learnt from the 'past'. But Houli is an automatic selection in my book despite his faults (all players have weaknesses) because he provides something different. You can't have a whole backline of lock-down players. Hurting the opposition on the rebound can be far more effective at times.

I'm guessing Ellis as I think he was brought in to try and perform the Houli role.

I think we all love a good whipping boy, BT. (Might have to go and give my scapegoat a few lashes. ;D)

AFL tables has him at 23.62 for 2017 and 24.92 for 2016, tim. 23.62 rounded to 24. That's my ready reckoner.

Fair enough, I used Wiki (I should've known better! :))

Yep. Look in the end I agree he has his flaws which is mainly to do with his defensive one on one skill and he isn't immune to the brain fade. But I will never condemn a player who tries to make things happen and stuffs up every now and then. To me the unpredictability creates opportunity. We have one of the best lock down backlines in the league; Rance, Grimes, Astbury, Vlastuin. You need players to complement that and at this point in time I believe Houli does that the best out of our currently listed players. Good luck to all out players who wear the proud yellow n black.

Not your greatest analogy BLX, Conca and Griff where brought in off injury, (underdone), and was a calculated gamble which didn't pay off. Houli has been smashing it out at training and raring to go. Respect though, that in your opinion he is not in your best 22.
I'm a fan and reckon he provides unbelievable run and we will be a better side for his inclusion.

I've told you what I see, tell me what you ser. The contest squibbing? The panic handballs to hot teamates? The turnovers that cost us? The lack if run back to cover?

Perhaps we all see what we want to see.

I see courageous gut running week after week that provides great connection between the D50 and F50. I see an accumulator and good distributor of the pill who may be guilty of the occasional clanger but hell even Dusty and Danger do that. I see someone who has improved the contested side of the game to the point where i'm now confident that he will win most of his one on ones.

He comes straight back in at the expense of Broad.

Without Houli I think we have lost our kamikaze run.

Houli's run and spread and link up creates holes and options, making us less predictable.
Even more important when we don't have tall 'down the line' targets.

After this week show his importance to the team, Houli will be tagged each week by the opposition.

Liked this, TM. He has been missed. The coach described him as "elite" in his post game press conference. So we can rest pretty easy about his inclusion this weekend.

I like Broad's height and he has kicked well so maybe Cellis will make way (he had a couple of kicks that created turnovers).

He's already stated he's coming straight back in.

If it's not facts it's your gut feel, I'll go with the facts. His turnovers are very damaging, he rarely does a job on an opposition forward and his contribution to our scoring thrusts are far more limited than pundits believe. Prove otherwise.
Amongst defenders, he's ranked 7th in the league for Supercoach scoring average which is compiled by champion data.

Ranked above him are Docherty, Laird, Hurley, Hibberd, Roberton - pretty much the elite HBs of the comp.

He must be doing something right.

ha ha. considering Lambys constant reference to player ratings to defend Edwards it will be interesting how he justifies ignoring that.

I presume he gets points for turnovers kicks and panic handballs to hot teamates. Premierships aren't won by suoercoach points. It's points for and against.

Houli is rated no 268 in the AFL on AFL player ratings (277 points in total) which is based on a players last 40 games.

Houli is ranked 47th out of all small/medium defenders.

By way of reference Dan Butler who has played only 17 games has 154 points.

Shed is ranked 91 in the AFL with 408 points. Shed is ranked no 5 in midfield/forwards.

Houli has struggled on AFL ratings because of so many negative actions in which he loses points.
