Bachar Houli - بشار حولي,

People are quick to stick the boots into Houli. However he is the only player who runs off half back to create a forward attack. He has no support. We have no one else.

If we drop him we'll find someone else and the likelihood is that they cant be any worse!!

Rance runs it forward, so does Grimes to an extent. The biggest problem with Houli is when he's manned up on.
He can't shake off his opponent plus his tackling skills are not good. When he's manned up even slightly the
pressure on him becomes too much and he goes to pieces.

The Bulldogs showed how to deal with Houli and Griggs today, simple man up on them and they will wilt under
the pressure, going missing in action or if they get the ball make awlful errors.

Every other AFL coach will have seen our performance today and you can bet they will be looking to do exactly
the same to us as the doggies did to us.

Me, I'd ideally drop both Houli and Griggs back to VFL. McIntosh seems to be a pretty good option as a "link up"
player plus he's got pace, goes hard at the ball, will tackle and makes good decisions.

Time to get tough on these players will faults, either you improve or you're dropped. Youth must be our priority
and if that means players like Houli get dropped so be it.

Won't happen though hardwick hasn't got the guts to do it.

Correct. Hardwick has rarely if ever made a statement by dropping chronically under-performing players.

Who? Matt Dea ;D

Well you could try Deledio, Lennon or McDonagh but you know what I might try.

Matthew Arnott, he'll turn over the odd ball but he'll run straight lines and wont hear footsteps and his long kicking is about par with Houli's.

Close shave would do him good. By the way quite a few in the league need a razor blade company as a sponsor them.

Mmmm Tough running crash through back pocket type? Maybe worth a crack

He is a fumbler and when you really really need him to hit a target he inevitable misses.

Does not like pressure at all.

We have a backline full of em.

yesterdays loss exemplified our current situation.

We HAVE NOT improved

We still have players like Houli who refuse to play tough football [ie high pressure footy] when the going gets tough

We still have unskilled players getting games over genuinely skilled players ie Pet-*smile* over Knights

and i've nearly had enough of the farce that is our selection table!

Disagree, they were ordinary today but I'd play either of Mcdonagh or Lennon in his role. They have more hurt factor by foot.

Drummond is a very keen kid with good size and he'd give you great run and speed down there although his kicking is just OK.

You could brings Knights in forward and chuck Deledio back.

Heaps of options

Those that claim Houli is an elite backman and potential AA must be squirming a little after yesterday. Houli is a one-sided elite endurance athlete with poor defensive skills and a lack of composure. We need more speed and composure back there.

Deledio was sorely missed yesterday and he should be playing HBF. His ball use is sublime, no one in our backline (probably other than Rance) is reliable by foot. How long is Yarran contracted for? He is exactly the type we need.

Thought he was one of the better players, but embodied the team's mindset in the third quarter when he received a handball on his left side outside 50, in enough space to take a few strides and have a shot. Dished off instead to Cotchin who was pressured => turnover => opportunity lost.

The opposition comes at us, not the other way round, and we become hesitant. As a result Houli sometimes doesn't have targets clearly presenting when he goes forward (as opposed to across the ground). This happened last year as well. Not sure Houli should carry disproportionate blame here. You could put e.g. last year's AA Malceski in yesterday's team and he'd look ordinary.

Exactly right as I said people are over reacting. He wasn't great but not diabolical as some are suggesting. Bulldogs stopped our run and in those situations its difficult for players like houli. I'm not defending his game , as so.some says he needs to reduce the gap between his best and worst but in a functioning side houli is an important and damaging player.

Houli would greatly benefit from a gun half back as much as anybody.

Nick Malceski maybe? We didn't go after Malco or Jeffy Garlett. I get you can't land every free agent but we weren't even mentioned as being in the running for either of these two. Just odd.

A Malceski type would be great, however with our position on the clock an his cost an length of contract ,plus his knee history an age, I don't mind that we went to the draft instead . Heard them talking about Garlett the other day an how bad his off field issues were, he may well bite us in the ass as again his type would be perfect for us, however if MM couldn't get him to straighten up I wouldn't have backed us too

Against Carlton Houli gained in excess of 700 meters ( a clear game high). Against the bulldogs he was well held.
The biggest issue in my opinion is not that Houli was beaten on the day but that we have no plan B for running it out of the back line in this situation.

Look at Hawthorn in last years Grand final there half back line for much of the 1st quarter was Mitchell, Hodge & Burgoyne. There is plan AB&C.

Houli would obviously not get a game in that team nor is he part of our next premiership side but he is well ahead of 4 or 5 others who played on the weekend.

I'd be happy for Houli & Petterd to have their papers marked!

I agree with playing Lennon & Knights above these two ..... assuming they are fit.

He was horrible but he's normally pretty consistent. Calls to drop or move out of a rebounding role are a bit silly. Our only other rebounder is Newman? So you're getting 10 possessions out of him a week. We need Houli for now. Newman needs to be replaced first.
