Andrew 'Mini' McQualter

Cant stay without a big assistant cleanup. Just doesnt make sense in my opinion. Im not sold on him yet, but if we make finals and even win a final you coulkdnt complain about Andrew getting the gig.
Our shortcomings are on field not in the bloody coaching box , you could have norm smith reincarnated, won’t help that we haven’t got Tom lynch out there , rutten has done wonders with our defenders , hes not going anywhere

The only reason you'd entertain bringing someone else in at this point, is because you want them to do something that McQualter isn't doing or isn't capable of doing.

I'm stuffed if I can think of what that might be.
The circumstances for a new broom are if we’d endured years of norf / WC type performances, cLeary thats not the case and it’s pertinent that dimmas disciples in McRae and now Kingsley are doing very well

I think it's telling that with both Teague and Rutten on the books, the club gave the caretaker position to an untried bloke. It was clearly an audition of sorts from the beginning and so far he's clearly passed.

Does he get the role permanently? Not sure, but he's got to be the favourite unless the wheels really fall off over the next month.

I’m really happy for him. He’s conducting himself amazingly well and has got us up and going. Yes there are still issues with the way we play but there’s a harder edge and more energy now and we’re actually closing out games well! He’s doing everything right so far and I’m just really thankful that he’s put some semblance of control back into our season. It’s up to us now.

Whether he’s the right man for the job I’ll put full faith in the club to find us the best candidate

You'd think having 2 past coaches would be of great help and benefit for Mini. Not sure a caretaker has ever had the same luxury.

Probably because the 6 wins have all been against sides we expected to beat, but to his credit we won them. The loss against Port was creditable given they have a better side but the loss to Brisbane was diabolical.

Whilst we have won the last two games we have played poorly for the most part in both games. We beat West Coast by 6 goals when everyone else fills their boots against them and have percentage boosters. Apart from a 10 minute burst at the start of the 3rd quarter we were very underwhelming. Again yesterday we struggled against a bottom 4 side for most of the game and then exploded in the last quarter.

The next 2 games will tell us more about Mini and the team. Beat Melbourne and the Job is as good as his, put in a performance like we did against Brisbane and he’s done.
More to do with structure than the ability to coach.
Our fwd line structure without Lynch is diabolical.
Jack in 17 worked.
Jack in 23 hasn't for obvious reasons.
Can only work with the tools you have.

Lucky enough to hear Mini in an interview at Club 80 last night.
Whilst I can't disclose too much he came across as a very astute coach.
Witty, whip smart, honest & candid to the questions from the audience.
Was good to get to know him better & I can see why the players warm to him.

The ability for the opposition to transition too easily from defence to attack is what I have seen as our biggest weakness in recent years. Sometimes we have looked like witches hats
On Saturday we were poor again in this space for 3 quarters
I think you are right in assessing that it helped that the hawks ran out of legs but also it is to do with our pressure level.
We need to fix this to be a much better team

I don't think an inability to stop transition from defence to scoring is a weakness we are alone in having. Maybe it is the rule changes, mainly the truly awful stand rule, but transition from defence is hard to stop these days. That said, we need to improve and we need some analysis to find a way.

Just about every team has been able to go on a run of 4, 5, 6 or even more quick goals in succession this year (ok, maybe not WCE), it has become a feature of the game and every team seems to struggle to stop this. A way will be found to combat the quick deluge of goals, I suspect it might have something to do with stacking the back line with 18 players, but it will happen. We certainly need to find a way to defend better when the opposition has a run on.

The one area we really need to address is how we perform at centre bounces. They are clearly working on this, but we often let the opposition clean clearances and we rarely get a clearance which isn't hurried. I don't know what it is but something isn't quite right.

So, if McQualter gets the gig, then there must be a thorough assessment of the assistants and likely a few changes.

Won’t happen , however the one name that nearly on the inner sanctum , players include say is Kane Lambert , pity he didn’t have another year under the belt

I reckon the 2 areas are improving the teams skill set (does my head in that AFL players can’t hit a target from 20 metres away, it misses or goes over the team mates head, or at his feet, or metres to the left or right. And the simple skill of hand balling that similarly is at the feet or behind the back of the intended target) and the forward entries. bombing into the forward line doesn’t work and it comes straight back out. So how shall we enter the forward line on the next entry? I know! Bomb it in the forward line! That’ll work.

It’s like the Australian cricket teams fast bowlers when they bowl short, get hit for a boundary then bowl short again for another boundary. Then they think “I know, I’ll pitch this next one short!”

He’d need 4y plus more experience to be even close to being shortlisted anywhere not 18ths

And another skill that needs work is kicking goals from set shots.

Bauer got a run. Banks got a run. Coulthard got a run. Who next?

We've got everybody as sound and fresh as we can. We have measured the established talent. And we are finally seeing some new talent.

Mini has control. How are we going to shape over the next month and hopefully beyond?

Mini's vision and judgement are crucial right now.
