Andrew 'Mini' McQualter

There are times to be tough and times to put your arms around people.

Being Only ruthless is not the blueprint for success, its a combination of many determining factors.

Ask Carlton and Essendon how being ruthless is going!
It could be argued that being only ruthless was the legacy of GR.
In the end it probably cost us 30 + years in the wilderness.
We are too well run now to be down for a long time and our club is undoubtedly a destination club.
I’m not arguing for or against McQualter but to suggest we need a broom through the place risks destroying what makes us strong imo.

Yeah I agree with you.
Hardwick's legacy is only 3 cups, massive cultural impact and outstanding player relations. Not to mention wonderful memories.
For non-Richmond fans it must be a sad bitter taste in the throat, dont you reckon?
Gotta be a troll? Only ever posts extreme negativity with wierd arguments.

Cant stay without a big assistant cleanup. Just doesnt make sense in my opinion. Im not sold on him yet, but if we make finals and even win a final you coulkdnt complain about Andrew getting the gig.

Im also not 100% sold on Benny and Balme always getting it right, they more than most i trust as they have got it right most of the time, and at the right times, however they are human, this is such an important decision.

I have no real opinion on Mini or who should be our next coach, i just hope we get it right as if we dont it could really set us back years.

I guess what im saying is im nervous, even after the appointment we may not know for some time...

This is true. No matter how good people are and how good their track record is, there isn't a manager anywhere in any industry who hasn't got an appointment wrong at some stage.
They are great people with a great track record who love the RFC and that's all we can ask.

They have the runs on the board to give them the benefit of the doubt though. Sure they can make a mistake, but there's no one else I would trust more.

There's risk no matter who is appointed. At least with Mini we have a known quantity who is making a case through a long practical "interview". There won't be any shortcomings (or worse) that we don't know about.

Having said that, this must be a competitive appointment with other candidates put through a genuine process. The weekly PR push by players (with the club's blessing) doesn't make me feel it's a level playing field. Importantly, some candidates may also feel that way and opt out.

The only reason you'd entertain bringing someone else in at this point, is because you want them to do something that McQualter isn't doing or isn't capable of doing.

I'm stuffed if I can think of what that might be.

I don’t see that much has changed from Dimma but I think there are 3 things that come to mind.
1. He immediately used Dusty and Bolton more on the ball and at clearances.
2. He is more likely to react quickly in game and make changes
3. I don’t think we are necessarily playing any better overall but what we are doing is closing out and winning close games

All are positives imo

Individually Balme & Benny have impeccable track records. Together Richmond has never had a better run and a more envied reputation.

Getting to 100k members and staying there for six seasons on the trot is remarkable. Getting the most out of that sacred spot at Punt Road is another(long hard road still ahead though). The quality of leaders we have been churning out both on and off field is second to none also.

I’ve been a fanatic Tigers man for sixty plus years. Enjoyed the fabulous successes in the late ‘60’s/early 70’s…. the disappointments until TJ fired the troops up again in 1980, then all the heartaches for the next 37 years. Never once lost the faith!

Benny, Balmy, Peggy and Dimma all came at the right time. The latter two left with impeccable timing, both without a hiccup. What other club in recent history has been able to achieve that.

We will have further on field leadership changes in the near term. I trust the Richmond Club to keep doing the best they can and doing it very well…. but it won’t be easy!

Let’s support our team over the remaining rounds and enjoy the ride all the way until the end of the season and when the new coach gets appointed.

Difficult to see anyone else getting the nod now. However it will be interesting to see what happens with the assistants under a Mini reign.

Yep, it's in the bag for Mini. Players don't want to lose him, even considering new ones such as Taz and Hop speak highly of him.

I see measurable game plan changes.

We're transitioning forward via different corridors.
We've markedly changed our forward set up and how we score (and who scores).
- Note: I watched the forward positioning at training closely and we replicated it during the.
There's elements of the pressure game have changed. Until last Saturday we've also been better at center clearances and denying the opposition the center corridor. The Hawks did very well in that regard until they ran out of legs.

And for those that query does Mini have a hard edge, I can personally attest that he does. I copped it directly from him last year for asking a mildly stupid question during a coaching briefing.

The ability for the opposition to transition too easily from defence to attack is what I have seen as our biggest weakness in recent years. Sometimes we have looked like witches hats
On Saturday we were poor again in this space for 3 quarters
I think you are right in assessing that it helped that the hawks ran out of legs but also it is to do with our pressure level.
We need to fix this to be a much better team

2. for me has made watching us play far more enjoyable. It was always an irritant of mine with Dimma's coaching not that I should complain given the success he brought to the club. Of course 3 speaks for itself
