Andrew 'Mini' McQualter

So we’re happy to abandon the prerequisites we thought so important earlier?

McQualter hasn’t coached his own side, in fact he hasn’t coached anywhere other than Richmond for the past 9 seasons which is a concern in and of itself. I believe you need to experience different coaching philosophies and cultures before you can truly solidify your own style.

I have nothing against McQualter, but I’ve seen this before and it didn’t turn out so well.

Mini says he hasn't changed much in the game plan but he has got the lads believing again so has to be doing something right
Me thinks it would've been hard for Dimma to watch the game live. It'd be like watching the ex you had a long relationship with use the tricks you'd honed with her on her new lover... extremely well!

IMO theres been a huge change in the game plan we dont appear to be wanting to hold onto and defend a lead at all costs Sure we defend but we also attack as we did against the Sinners we didnt go into our shell we kept attacking thats what won us the game
Congrats Mini
My thoughts is Mini has restored belief in the boys and now they are hungry for the win more than tinkering much with the game plan although those who have more knowledge of footy than I have can probably see changes. Whatever it is, The games may be close but we get the four points and that is what matters

Jordan Lewis on AFL360 said he played in the teen teams with Mini as captain. Keeps getting a lot of good references.

What’s he got to lose really…. Smash it out of the park… gets the role, if he doesn’t someone else comes in with their team… it’s fully in his control currently… nice position to be in really

This. I think that’s part of the difference. Mini has nothing to lose, he wasn’t going to be a senior coach this year until Dimma leaving and who knows what happens after that?

Probably similar with the players. Playing more free I’d say. The coach walked out on them so I think that drops the expectations they had and they are all playing a bit more free as well. Nothing to lose now. They don’t make finals? Oh well the coach walked out because he didn’t think they could anyway.
They do make finals? Great.

We didn’t follow those rules when we appointed Hardwick, either.

You’re probably near the mark with your theory, however, why couldn’t McQualter be the permanent coach? Is there something you’ve observed that says he shouldn’t, or can’t be? Do you think the teams performance will tail off once again as the year goes on?

Because if we keep playing like this, and keep winning, and possibly make finals, surely he comes into serious consideration.

Aah, you misunderstand.

He is not the permanent coach now, which gives McQualter some freedom. But whether he can get the job from 2024? I don't know but I would certainly be interviewing him, he has the experience as an Assistant, he seems well respected and I reckon he's been seriously considered by a few clubs. Looks like the trajectory to become a senior coach.

For Richmond it is a little different as he has been with us for a while, if there is a feeling we need a new voice with ideas from outside then McQualter's chance to get the job will fall, otherwise I reckon he is a good chance to get it depending on what happens from here to the end of the year.

David King said this about interim coaches who then become permanent coach. When interim the white board has 2/3 things written on it usually “take the game on” “have fun” etc..when they become permanent the white board fills up with every thought on footy they ever had. He said this was what Rhys Shaw did at Kangas.

I am not buying the Teague and Shaw comparisons. Both took over clubs that were a basket case.

Interesting to see if he comes out post Bye and declares he wants the job.
Might be a formal meeting with the Balmey, Gale etc. during this break and if he confirms he wants to take it on, I wouldn't be surprised the club will announce it before season's end without looking externally, especially now that we heard the players wanted this chaos game plan to continue.

on another note, and I’m being extremely picky, but I thought he had his first tiny little slip up in the presser after the game, when he took the *smile* out of cotch by saying “where have you been all year” in relation to his form.

It was Cotchins night, he’s arguably the greatest Captain we’ve ever had, he’s had a stellar career, he didn’t need his form brought up, however jokingly the comment was made. Just thought he didn’t need to say it.

I'm not sure I'd be happy with this unless we made finals convincingly. Otherwise, I'd expect the process to look after this.
