Andrew 'Mini' McQualter

David King said this about interim coaches who then become permanent coach. When interim the white board has 2/3 things written on it usually “take the game on” “have fun” etc..when they become permanent the white board fills up with every thought on footy they ever had. He said this was what Rhys Shaw did at Kangas.
Remove the whiteboard.
Problem solved

Shaw is not a great one to use as a comparison. He’d done nowhere near the apprenticeship that McQualter had. He’d only been at #lolnorf since 2018. He was blindsided by the removal of Brad Scott. Said himself he didn’t feel he was ready. McQualter may not get the gig or work out if he does, but comparing him to Shaw or even Teague is doing him a disservice, and as has been pointed out, the Tigers are in a much better place than Shaw or Teague were when they were catapulted into their roles.

I reckon the change in the play on stat is critical.

We were playing on with abandon under Dimma and I think that resulted in our back division looking disorganised at times.

Holding onto the pill more often allows us to structure up and I think it has helped us repel if the oppo turns it over.

Agree.
We were a bit one dimensional.
Have felt teams are pretty confidant when the ball is contested that the Tigers will always play on and give them a chance to win back the ball.

Coll and Pa are using dimma game plan too , so your next point is ,
Quite a few knee jerk reactions on here.
Eddiewood are the only club that has embraced a full chaos style ,a few other's are using a partial chaos style ,mainly in the forward line .
The only club that has won a premiership playing chaos is the Tigers ,WC IN 2018, Demons 21 Geelong 22 Didn't play chaos .

Rutten doesn't get the accolades he deserves on here,he brought in the defensive structures ,same as Dimma brought in the rolling zones under Clarko.
The game will continue to evolve ,and unfortunately is heading more and more towards Gaelic football .
The Tigers need to select a coach ,who can not only coach for today''s football ,but who can implement a effective game style going into the future.

Mini sort of reminds me of when Scott took over Geelong ,a team that had a lot of premiership player's ,with quite a few coming to a end .
I still think Scotts first premiership should of been Bomber Thompsons 3rd ,he bailed a bit too early .

on another note, and I’m being extremely picky, but I thought he had his first tiny little slip up in the presser after the game, when he took the *smile* out of cotch by saying “where have you been all year” in relation to his form.

It was Cotchins night, he’s arguably the greatest Captain we’ve ever had, he’s had a stellar career, he didn’t need his form brought up, however jokingly the comment was made. Just thought he didn’t need to say it.
If I recall correctly, the Q was about his form being better last few weeks (when in mid) and when connected to other talking points around the half forward role, I interpreted mini's comment as maybe a slight dig at hardwick playing cotch out of position - or at least a 'see what happens wht you play mid' type thing. Possibly reinforced by cotch's grin, slight pause then 'no comment' response.

Was still awkward, but for a different reason to me.

Not too concerned with what King says about interim coaches. Interim coaches always get the gig after clubs sack their coach, on most occasions they are poorly run clubs. This is not the case with Dimma, he resigned. We are arguably the most professionally run club in the AFL.

The club will go through the process, and appoint who they think is the best person for the job.

Mini is ticking all the boxes so far, is using a game style that works, has made a few changes to it, and has mad some positional, and selection changes. Is giving himself every chance.

True.
It appeared like they would “sweat” on our “turnover”.

Agree re: Shaw. But not Teague. The comparison with McQualter for him as a caretaker is warranted.

He had a CV that read very well. Coached Northern Bullants to two Grand Finals.

Then 12 years as an assistant at Carlton, West Coast, St Kilda and Adelaide.

He had the background and experience to be a Full time coach - 100%. Moreso than Mini you could argue.

Whether he was good enough or a victim of the Carlton environment (at the time and now) is another argument.

Might be a formal meeting with the Balmey, Gale etc. during this break and if he confirms he wants to take it on, I wouldn't be surprised the club will announce it before season's end without looking externally, especially now that we heard the players wanted this chaos game plan to continue.
No chance.

The Shaw and Teague comparisons are valid to a point.

Richmond is coming off a premiership era with a very stable culture, Carlton and North were not. Complete opposite, more so in culture than success if you can fathom it.

If Dimma didn't pull the pin and we announced that we were doing a handover and Mini was taking charge at the end of the year, it would be hailed as smooth transition and testament to our culture. That's not the situation we find ourselves in but it's not that far removed.

Difference is Pricky just joined and was handed a gift on a silver platter whereas Mini's been Dimma's 2nd hand man for 10 years so went through the bad and the good.

Spot on. This might have been the original plan for it to have occured at the end of the year. Dimma on record as saying this would have been his last year regardless. Timeline just got pushed forward 6 months and a mini (pardon the pun) apprenticeship in place for McQualter.

Callum Wilkie from Saints big wrap for Josh Carr after pushing him to get into AFL from SANFL

Also I don't reckon most coaches who take over poor sides mid year are usually the highest regarded assistant coaches- not that their no good, but McQualter would have been a high chance to get any coaching gig that became available at the end of this year, even if Hardwick didn't pull the pin early.
No doubt , ask Ross Lyon
