America, will they ever learn? (Gun Control Debate)

I agree its more complex, difficult problems always are. Culture definately a factor. I'm not across the details, but I'd venture Canada might have similar levels of gun ownership, but more regulated in terms of what guns you can buy, how you buy them, justification of use etc. The point for me that there needs to be some sensible regulation within the US context. Banning high-powered military issue machine guns, and doing background checks on gun buyers would seem to be a pretty basic measures. Clinton actually brought some measures like this in, quite minimal measures, then Bush repealed them. The right to bear arms isn't the right for lunatics to bear machine guns, anyway, its crazy IMO.

I totally agree.

Read today that an 11 year old took a gun to school because he wanted to protect himself and his friends in case another "Adam Lanza" burst into their school.

It does seem very easy to arm oneself there, no matter the age.

Bloody hell. Tragic. but sadly not surprising. Its a pretty rational response within that crazy context, poor little fella.

I think per capita, there are more guns in Canada than in the USA, yet per capita the USA have more gun-related deaths.

So is it really the guns that are the problem or the people using them?
The culture?
Their history and patriotism?

I think its a lot more of a complex problem than just blaming guns.

Again,

This points to Rights over Responsibility.
Not only on a political level but from social and community perspectives.

There is no social or community safety net, nor infrastructural support.

We see the results of this again and again.
Whether it be gun-related incidents like this,
Or other issues such as homelessness.

We do have a safety net.
It's not now what it once was.
We have increasing homelessness & desperation.
However, fortunately, we do generally have a culture that knows that guns are wrong.
Unfortunately, as our social culture is changing, many of our safety nets are falling away.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

The other thing is Hollywood and the gaming industry has made a fortune glorifying guns and depicting gratuitous violence, yet the Americans get hung up on such things as sex scenes and people smoking on film.. :spin

Wrong. US has 88 per 100 people, Canada only 30.8.

agree. alex jones' good value. actually makes some valid points hadn't thought about b4.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

So that was Howard's plan too. All making sense now.

Amazing how many actually Americans actually believe that.
With all the guns out there things are going to get a lot worse in the States if their economy goes arse up.
Anarchy in the USA.

He's good value Jones though. For a fruitloop.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

yeah, think he's a bit OTT about the gun controls, but generally he's got some valid views on the corrupt US govt, globalisation, mass media, 911 etc.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

In my book, anyone who can make Piers Morgan look modest, polite and restrained is a dangerous person.

No doubt Alex Jones was prepared not to be lectured to by Morgan, however his belligerent delivery of irrational ramblings meant any such debate of gun laws became redundant.

Entertaining (and frightening), yet waste of time.

easier to resist a revolution if you disarm the masses.

im not sure 'disarming the masses' to limit the likelihood of an armed revolution in a country like the US is a bad thing myself.
