America, will they ever learn? (Gun Control Debate)

Re: America, will they ever learn?

To me,

America still has a "Cold War" mentality, all about rights and nothing about responsibility.

America's old Cold War rivals - Russia & China - have moved on, left the Cold War in the past, and have now become world dynamos.

America still sits in its past, like the Roman Empire, the Ancien Regime & British Empire, something that belonged to yesterday.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

It's is fundamentally an issue with society and these individuals who decide to go out with a bang.

Full machine guns were available for sale in the US up until the late 70s I think. Real automatics. But the schoolyard / office / mall shooting sprees are a modern phenomena. Guns are the tool of choice and I agree that there needs to be control, but there is something else seriously wrong.

It costs as much to buy a months worth of certain anti-anxiety drugs as it does to buy a small handgun in the US. A lot less stigma buying te adon too. That's not right.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

Not to make light of it, but why can't they ban all guns?
Their constitution says they "have a right to bear arms". It doesn't say "bear guns".
Let them happy with a bloody shanghai.

Back in the day when the constitution was being framed, it was single shot muskets, not automatic, high-powered military grade weapons or 15 bullet handguns.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

You could ban guns and these people would use something else like a bomb, knives or poison. The fundamental change needs to be about how we treat people that are different in society, for when people are bullied and outcast they will naturally want some sort of revenge. Why cant we ban bullies!

Sensible post.
We have to go to the source and find out why humans behave in a way to kill others.
I've know there is racism in society but I reckon there is another Racism that is just as bad,Intellectual racism.People who put down others because of being intellectually superior to them.
That happens at schools mostly and generally. They will find the weak and just hammer at him with words until, mentally they are a wreck.Others can fight and stop it but others just let people do it to them until it's bottled inside like a steam kettle.
Getting rid of guns may not be the answer and especially in a country as huge in population as the US,hard to manage.

Drugs and alcohol can affect people's thoughts as well.
I'm a happy drunk but I know if I go on the booze alot,I start getting agitated easily and on edge when I'm sober.

Then there are the Dexter types.People who have chromosones in them that make them cold blooded killers regardless.
Actually Dexter is quite compassionate for a bloke who is a serial killer.

Nobody is saying he was bullied. People generally left him alone.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

it appears this guy snapped, the guns were accessible, killed his mum, and continued the rampage against her students. Now let's replay the situation without the guns being available. He snaps, bludgeons his mum to death and goes to the pub.

Why did a kinder teacher have assault weapons?

insanity.

Yeah guns are easier to point than trying to stab 20 to death.
So glad we have strict gun rules here.

On the other hand Ii would rather be shot in head and die instantly than be tortured to death.

Absolutely, we as a society cant help "create" these issues and then wonder why things like this happen. Certainly no guns is a good start but the American mental health system is shocking, its either take some pills or find your own way home!

Bullying isn't just physical violence though, being teased or segregated is the same thing. Whilst it isn't clear if this young mans autistic tendencies were the main cause its safe to say he wasn't well.

Sounds like this kid wanted to be left alone.

There was a kid like this at my primary school, just roamed the perimeter of the school grounds by himself, seemingly deep in thought. He'd say 'Hi' back to you, but nothing else. Had no idea at the time, but looking back now I can understand that he was autistic. To my knowledge, he was always treated kindly by the other kids. Hi Gav, wherever you are!

My nephew has mild autism.

IIRC, the bloke who lit the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 was also autistic.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

The latest american massacre is an absolute shocker. 20 little innocent kids. The poor fella who did it must have had some neurons seriously cross wired. Someone else asked a very good question. What is a kinder teacher and her disabled son doing with automatic rifles? Seems an extraordinary no-brainer too me. Our gun laws are good I reckon. If you are a primary producer and not a certified nut job, you can own and keep a shot gun or a rifle, the kind to put down a cow or shoot a dog, not the kind where you squeeze the trigger for a mini armeggedon. If you arent a PP, you can own a gun and keep it at a gun club. The right to bear arms is bollocks. It would make more sense to arm bears.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

Sadly the right to bear arms is part of the second ammendment of their constitution that they are hella protective over.

Back in the day when written up and through the 1880s it didnt matter so much but today there is no need for such weapons to be legally allowed in society.

Re: America, will they ever learn?

Looking at the photograph of the killer is chilling and disturbing...quite evidently something incredibly wrong mentally too. Mental issues aside, it's a pity he killed himself. Bubba in the big house doesn't take kindly to some scumbag who kills defenceless 5 year old children......

Nice post LTRTR

Re: America, will they ever learn?

I had a friend at school who was diagnosed with autism. She appeared aloof and as though she just wanted to be alone but fact is she couldn't hold conversations and was very uncomfortable with other people. She was one of the gentlest people I've ever known. Why are we discussing autism in relation to this awful situation?

Domestic involving guns in Tassie today. A man shot dead his ex and her new partner then turned the gun on himself. The woman's 9yo daughter was there and called police. Sad.

They say the killer had mild autism which could be a reason to the usual "what was he thinking?" question that's always hard to answer.

Wasn't the Black Saturday arsonist also autistic?

Agree Harry. People shouldn't try and change this to a discussion about mental health. First and foremost it is about the availability of guns and the weak laws that allow people access to them. I actually hunt and have four fire arms which are in a gun safe with the ammo stored separately as our laws require.
