Alex Rance

On the not marking in defence re Rance its a directive from Leppitsch and Hardwick that the defenders are to spoil and learn how to KILL the Contest hence Grimes high spoil rate.

Then next year the defenders will be taught better how to win body on body marking contests, this is FACT i heard Leppitsch speaking about it.

Pay attention to the amount of times tiger defenders spoil when they could easily attempt a mark. They can mark when safe but in a contest they are expected to spoil, spoil and then spoil.

It was one of the facets of Andy Kellaways game that i really liked the bloke was a top spoiler yet very good in the marking contests also.

Good I like this.

Hardwick came to the club seeking a two year period during which time he would set up the changes required to establish a long term tilt at the success we all crave. He was granted this by the club.

This is another aspect that is consistent with his overall approach. Select the players you want, give them opportunity, teach them what they need to know to improve, help them get the tools they need, push them through the 50 game barrier.

This is still a learning year, regardless of what happens on the field.

Thanks for this Craig. I'm one who has been screaming "Mark the *smile* thing" at Rance, McGuane, Thursfield, Astbury, Grimes et al over the last 12mths. But this puts a decent context around the tactic. Good stuff.

Good posting Craig. People really need to remember that if a player keeps doing something, out is likely because the coach has instructed so.

He was really good tonight. Only made one real mistake, and only cost us a point.

Well done Alex.

He keeps improving & is one who I must admit didn't think much of at the start of this season. A top game today.

At least with Rance we know that week in, week out we have a guy who is 100% committed to the contest, his courage never ceases to amaze me.

Yeah, reckon we've got a few years of that to look forward to. Grimes, Astbury, Rance. Sounds good to me.

agree.

Sucks that Astbury went down. Was really enjoying the Richmond backline today sans McGuane.

You prefer Miller down back to Luke ?

Miller only went back after Astbury went down didn't he?

Hard to tell, Astbury went down in the first few minutes and I was only listening to the radio.

Yep, and his strength is second to none. Has won me over. Keep it up Alex.

Yes, he did. Completely at sea with the rules. Not surprising given that you can't do anything as a backman these days without giving away free kicks.
