Alex Rance

Without naming names, these comments come from less than a month ago and look pretty silly now:

I know where my draft priorities would lay. These two hacks, clowns, duds, spuds, need to be replaced ASAP. NOT premiership standard.

They are terrible. At every contest one of them ends up falling over. While these guys remain our two main defenders we will go nowhere

But Rance is hopeless always has been and always will be imo.
I hear on PRE that he's improved blah blah......rubbish.
I cringe every time he is near the footy, hope he's gone at the end of the year.

Agree with this. Rance just has no clue how to play football. Zero, zilch, zip, nada, bubkus.

He will hold down fullback all year, he had a shocker against the dogs but bar that game and he does the famous gaspar goose run, but at least he will take the game on, averaging a high disposal count too. Has stepped it up and its all going well. Good size, his body matured early, so like Martin he can develop into a key player early on in his career.

without saying rance has made it, prob the thing that has been in his favour is that his 2 main weaknesses, composure and competing one-on-one, are 2 things that are relatively 'easy' to improve, 'easy' compared to skill or athletic ability.
last week, he was at time poor one-on-one, and at times his composure was lacking, this week neither was a problem and his strengths shone thru. the challenge now is to eliminate those weaknesses altogether.

Rance appears to benefit from having some pacy defenders around him. He makes great contests and can win hard balls, then all that work can be capped off nicely when a Nahas like player can relieve him of disposal worries. I hope he continues to develop, tough hard defenders are vital.

I'll name names. The first one's me!!! ;D ;D ;D

I thought for sure that I'd crack a mention in that post By Disco 08 too TTT.........

Now lets see Rancid put together a few good performances for the rest of the season and none of us past critics will have a leg to stand on, its a fine line afterall between Goose & Goat for many.

Rance came of age last night.
I never rated him but I'm glad to eat a big slice of humble pie.
Hope he keeps it up.

Been pretty good all year.

BTW that running chest mark he took late in the third with Hille coming at him was pure kamikaze stuff.
Alex is crazy fearless.

That mark was up there with Nick Riewoldt's and Jono Brown's efforts several seasons ago. We like to idolise the gravity defying stuff but rushing head first into a pack takes a quality which very few footballers possess.

One of those paragraphs looks familiar. Still, I am not getting caught up over one game. Last week showed just how Rance's performances can fluctuate from one week to the next.

I hope he turns into a quality defender who we can rely upon game after game and year after year. He ain't there yet.

ive already put my hand up as one of those critics and im more than happy to eat humble pie

and ill also admit im bad when im watching the footy i give our players a spray for making basic mistakes but saturday night the only ones that got spray from me was the umpires and the bummers supporters

It also showed his latent ability and exactly how ludicrous it was to say he can't play at all.

Lots of players fluctuate from week to week as conditions and opponents, as well as team mates, change. Alex has been reasonably consistent in all of his games this season.

Thanks Rosy. I didn't know that.

Top marks for the smart alec reply. If you knew Alex had been reasonably consistent all year why did you comment that last week showed how his performances can fluctuate from one week to the next?

I actually was responding to your comment about how players form can fluctuate every week for various reasons. Again, thanks for pointing out the bleeding obvious.

And in my opinion, Alex hasn't been reasonably consistent all year, so I disagree with you there. Thats the beauty of football, people can have different opinions.

Personally think thats quite the stretch Rosy........... this past Saturdays game was so far and beyond anything in the past its not even close.

I agree with this, I think he has been quite good, each week this year. Does alot more good than bad. People also don't notice his off the ball stuff.
