You're a fan of helicopter kicking skills?
AA? Gaspar would struggle to get picked with his disposal ability in open play these days.
McGuane looks skilful by comparison.

This is like saying John Nicholls would struggle today as the game has changed. AA is AA - give credit where its due.

I reckon Lou Richards would struggle if he played now at his age.

At the very least, Rance is a %50 better footballer then he was last year. When nothing is on offer, he is taking the game on, running forward and at times looking good doing it. And he runs the lines hard and tries to get involved in link ups. The rate of improvement is huge. I don't think Rance is the finished product and if he continues to get better then I think there is a role for him.

The rate of improvement in Alex Rance is staggering. Would have given up on him last season. Great credit goes to the coaching staff for turning this ship around. Along with the massive improvement in Angus Graeham, Robin Nahas, Jake King and Shane Edwards its the reason for our renewed short term and long term hope.

As much as i move to the edge of my seat when Rancey gets the pill, I do feel comforatable when he is one on one in a contest. He is very strong and extremely quick - seems to always get to the contest and is a decent spoiler. I think in another season or two we will really see what this kid can give us. Dance a merry dance Rance!

Hope Rance does a hell of a lot of one on one work with Jack, Jacks brilliant football nouse would have to be great for Rances education, bit of an added bonus to have the leagues smartest key forward in the same team

This is the reason I rate Rance above most of our other backs at the moment, he offers run and tries to create, he may not always get it right, but the fact that hes prepared to back himself, puts him well in front of the likes of Thursty and co at the moment, as this is the way the games going. Just look at the Collingwood defence. There all about running to advantage and assisting their mates, which makes some of them look better than they are.

Yeah, was thinking about this during the last quarter.
Rance was doing a great job, with the defence as a group doing the usual round and round with the pill looking for the outlet pass (which usually came).
I was heart-in- mouth hoping we didn't turn it over as we used to do on a regular basis, under forward pressure.
After we got the ball out to the loose man on the members wing for about the fourth time, the penny dropped for me.
The more they are under that sort of pressure and get out of trouble, no matter how scary it is at the moment, the better they will be in each game in the future.

In jan I went to a training session, and at the end alex, jack, astbury and griff were doing an excise together. They would take turns for one to stand out to mark a towering kick with hands out. Alex certainly matched the others for skills. I thought at the time, if only this matching of skills would be reflected during the match, because he and jack were the standouts. And not just because alex is hell of a unit.

7 games in, I now am confident that alex will become a very good player for us.

I was a bit less impressed with Rance than most last week. I'm not shitcanning him because I reckon he needed a break like a hole in the head. That said, his composure with the ball wasn't bad at all.

I reckon he'll improve over the next few weeks.

Like Mcguane,Rance needs a get out of jail card as soon as he gets the ball.Like Mcguane the longer they have ball in hand the pressure builds and thats when mistakes are made. Its up to his more Skilled teamates to react quicker to the situation and create that get out of Jail card.

Captain, you're off the mark comparing Rance to McGuane. The improvement in Rance this season has been a real bonus for us. We're talking about a player of some 30 games experience. He is as strong as an ox in one on one contests. He is rarely outmarked because his ability to effect a spoil and get the ball to the ground is one of his strengths. Even his decision making is improving each game. I was close to writing this guy off last year, but he has the potential to become a key defender for us.

As for McGuane, your summation is right. We can't be consistent top 4 material with the likes of McGuane in our team.

Its as enjoyable as a win watching a young player improve. Still don't know if he is going to make but the chicken entrails are certainly looking a lot better than last year.

It's easy to forget that this kid is still only 21.5 years old and still has his best well and truly ahead of him. He's been excellent so far this year. Solid disposal and decision making time and again, heaps of marks taken above his shoulders and doing well one on one most of the time. Grimey leading the league for spoils is unbelievable but it shouldn't go unnoticed that Rance is in the top 20 ahead of the likes of Carlile and Gilbert. Add this ability to his obvious strengths of courage and run and rebound and it's easy to see why Lamby should be here admitting he might just have spoken too soon.
