Alex Rance

Still a way to go though Tooheys dont you think....

Ball in hand down back is still a (the) major weakness.

Sure there's room for improvement Definitely getting better though.

The quartet of Newman, Conca Bachelor & Deledio use the ball as well as anyone we've had for a long time.
Taller players more of an issue.
Grimes pretty safe with the ball. Rance improving.
McGuane obviously the least certain with the football but is working within his limitations better than he used to.

Would not have had min in our starting 18 this year but he slowly is showing he can play the game.

- has ok speed,
- kicking is ok (apart from the out of bounds clanger Sat night). should NEVER take a full back kick in
- In now starting to use his frame to effect, big solid unit, ferocious at the ball
- More than often running to the right sports
- Is not reacting like a rabbit in front of a spotlight when he has the ball now, backing himself in get out of trouble.

With some smart thinkers around him (Newman, Deledio, Conca, Batchelor) he is coming of age. Lets home 2011 is the year he arrives at this level. Listening to the game at the G on Sat, the SEN commentators where full of praise for Rance and whilst we all agree there is some way to go, lets applaud what he has done thus far. Step in the right direction! :clap

Gee I hope he ends up better than Gaspar. Gaspar makes McGuane look like Jarman kicking wise and was terrible in other skills apart from marking. Gas used to freak me out when he had the ball.

Me too. :hihi

He, Chaffey and D Kellaway down back..

We've come a ways since then.

Gas was AA at least once.

We could do with him right now.

I just wish him and Grimes could play a whole match the way they end playing.

They seemed lost early, and I keep saying it, they give away some cheap frees early in matches.

They both need to back themselves from the start, not wait till the game is half over. In saying that, early in the game seems when our backs are under immense pressure, the way the 1st quarters are going.

Best thing about rance is that he now has a big athletic body and he plays a very athletic game.

Tough and competitive key defender that hates losing a contest. Tick

That big athletic body will get him plenty of games as we lack alternatives, but the brain fades remain a problem.
The rabbit in a spotlight syndrome rachets up against the sides that do forward pressure best.
If he can lose this with expereince then we might have a player, but i tend to think its a skill hard to learn.

Like Mcguane,Rance needs a get out of jail card as soon as he gets the ball.Like Mcguane the longer they have ball in hand the pressure builds and thats when mistakes are made. Its up to his more Skilled teamates to react quicker to the situation and create that get out of Jail card.

He is improving but I still cringe when he gets the ball. Smarts isn't something that can be taught, this is my main concern with him.

I don't know if you were there on Saturday, but based on what I saw, I suggest your observation is a bit out of date. Alex's work - particularly in the last quarter - was very composed and polished. While I have been a fan of Luke, I reckon Alex has raced past him - partly because (a) he covers the ground far better, and (b) he is a better kick. Rance will still make some howlers - as do most players with 20-odd games of footy.

Yes my Observation is out of date if we only go on the last qtr.Much easier for Alex and Co if the opposition run out of puff.Don,t get me wrong Alex has improved but id prefer if he left the clean disposal bit to someone else. ;)

He is a long way from Gaspar, and he has a long way to go IMO.

While I see some improvement, the jury is still well and truely our for me.
As long as he keeps improving as he develops and matures there'll never be any need to call for the jury. Reckon the way he's going he'll be a rock solid key defender by the time he has 60 or so games under the belt.

I have had no problems with Alex's disposal efficiency this year. Others will have the stats, but he hits most targets by foot. The in close hand work will improve with a further 15-20 games.

Agree. Rance has vastly improved that area of his game as his confidence has built up. McGuane on the other hand, what he gives is his best, he ain't gonna improve from where he is.

Yeah, you wonder where people get their info from. Very little wrong with Rance's disposal this year. Has a pretty good action. It's his decision making he had to work on and it's massively improved. I think that's come with confidence and belief in himself.

Agree. Still unsure on himself with ball in hand after so long in the system. Too costly in that area of the ground. Needs to be replaced long-term.

You're a fan of helicopter kicking skills?
AA? Gaspar would struggle to get picked with his disposal ability in open play these days.
McGuane looks skilful by comparison.

Didn't need to kick with the likes of Chaffey and Biddiscombe running past for the handball....

Gas was a flawed player for sure but he was very good one on one. Not just spoiling but also his overhead marking.
It was a pity he has poor disposal skills but he was a terrific stopper and defender .
This is actually the weakest part of Rance's game although he has improved it immensely . I have said before that the degree to which he has improved overhead is very impressive.
