Def need to watch the replay Maleny, Rancealot was nowhere near as bad as some are pretending. Think to many were expecting him to become elite within his first season on the list.
Seems to me that he's finally starting to develop into a solid defender, he showed a few glimpses last year and has continued to improve through this years preseason. Hopefully he doesn't get cited for Waite crashing into him and gets every opportunity to keep improving this year, I still think he'll be a decent player by years end with still more improvement to go next year.
I agree I thought he was pretty good and disposed of the ball well. Put the death knell on Gourdis and Thursfields careers I thought.

i seriously cant believe what people are saying about this guys performance. i thought he was fantastic considering how terrible our midfield pressure was (as per usual). He may not become elite but he is heaps better than some other defenders we have.

3rd or 4th defender would be perfect for him. In fact i'd think he would dominate a dempster type half forward, or gamble imo.

The problem is he'll have to play on reiwoldt or the resting ruckman.

Simple fact is any backman is going to look average when a midfield with the quality Carlscum have keep pumping the ball inside 50 that many times.

Albey is on the improve, yes he still makes a few bad choices like handballing to guy 2feet away who is flat footed but until we run hard to space and spread its going to keep happening.

Look at the Pies, guys like Maxwell and O'brien are hacks with there disposal but because Collingwood run hard and into space theres not a lot of pressure on the kicks because they dont have to be pin point.

When our midfield learns to run both ways and apply pressure up the ground guys like Albey and Muscles will look so much better

totally agree, untill our midfield learns how to work its butt off offensively and defensively evryones job, backmen and forwrds, will be very difficult

What I see is a 21 year old kid who has worked really hard on his deficiencies and looks a better player than he did 12 months ago.

He hit the marking contest with a lot more confidence than I remember and also it is easy to forget that his opponent ( at least for the 2nd half ) was Andrew Walker . A defenders role first is to stop his opponent . How much effect did Walker have when Rance was on him ? Very little . He got some ball in the first half when he was leading to space and was hit lace out. Walker was supposedly in good form and had a very good pre season.

Rance is no star at this point but I see the improvement . Lets hope he keeps it up.

Only once was that the case and when Eddie Betts comes out of nowhere I ask anyone to see it coming!

He was very good was Rance, people need to take another look at the game.
That one was unfortunate (he should have seen it coming though, Betts was on the move BEFORE Rance recieved the hand ball and was in his line of sight if he had better awareness he would have seen him) but it far from his only fumble, dodgey handpass, poor decision, rotten kick. He worked hard, he always does, but his decision making is a real concern. It puts massive pressure on his team-mates down back. I'm not nearly a dark-sider but I think Rance looks really loose under pressure and I don't think you can afford that in the backline (if anywhere).

The point about people needing to look closer or see past their own perceptions is a good one because statistically only Houli and Newman used the ball better than Rance.

I'm not convinced on Rance yet but he has to be given a go. Should get as many games into him as we can this year before we decide if he is going to make it or not.

Agree. This applies to around 8-10 of our boys. Hopefully at least half of them emerge as 50+ game players with a big future.

To quote a Poster on a different thread - our defence had more ball coming at them than an adult entertainment professional. I thought Rance had improved markedly in the air, he hit the contest hard a number of times and we rarely conceded contested marks in defensive 50.

He is still a bit rough with his disposal but you can see the improvement there too. Overall an encouraging performance.

Of this there is no doubt. Alex has obviously worked very hard at his game.

As has been the case with King, Mitch, White and Jacko in the past couple of years. While some will not acknowledge this development, many independent observers would say that they are (at least) competent AFL players.

Rance was not the problem last week. It was Cotch/Dusty/Foley/Lids (ie our A-Graders) who had their collective pants pulled down - in the first half in Cotch's case.

Alex has a fair way to go but credit to our development people and Alex. He has improved both his defensive plays and his composure.

Still issues with awareness and in the main he is being played on mediums rather than talls so the question of whtehr he develops into a key back is still very much unanswered but as someone who gave him no chance, well done on teh improvement (so far).

I actually mentioned this last year that he might have had a depth perception problem. His aerial judgement appears much better this year - confidence, contact lenses or perhaps recovery from some nasty hits? Any thoughts?

He got 4 weeks, 3 if he pleads guilty.

Pretty harsh I'd say. When's Moore back?

Wow, it was a head clash wasn't it?

I think they made it that harsh because they let him get away with bopping Franklin in the moosh a year or two ago.

Waite gets off Farren Ray gets off and Rance gets 4 weeks !
::) they have lost there minds in there!

Scarlett gets 1 week for an off the ball elbow to Riewoldt. ::)
Rance gets 4 weeks. :help I totally expected the tribunal to give us such a harsh penalty.
We seem to always get the maximum penalty.

In: Thursfield and king
Out: Rance and Helbig

The M.M.P screws us 1st Cotchin against north and now Rance.
1 week at best, 3 weeks is absolutely *smile*
