he looked good at richmond as a running back to. when richmond gigure out he isnt a forward he will look good again too
:rofl :rofl

If the coaching staff can get some value out of Rancealot as a defensive harrassing forward then it's purely a win win for us.
Dimma is working at constructing a solid defensive capability first before expanding the attacking side of our game, so if Rance grows into the task no probs. If Rance succeeds in any position on the field it's pure bonus simply because plenty of us have doubts about him and none of us are happy about the prospect of another high pick failing.
A bit of big bodied Rance crashing around the forward line might even make a bit of extra space for Jaaack to work in as well.
Our season isn't really going anywhere this year so there's no harm in getting an extra fifteen to twenty games into a big robust player and being absolutely certain about his future prospects, he hasn't really been around long enough to be a list clogger, hopefully he can keep developing.

the question is though Nige - why did we draft a kid who cant mark, kick, play one on one footy, defend or make good decisions at 18?

Did you see him at Junior level?

Was one of the best in a strong WA side and looked far better than Pears at the same age. He might come good or he might not but you cant bag the selection imo.

Has shown he can do some good things but needs to cut the brain fades out.

Makes sense....we have plenty of others who are proven list cloggers to flick first.

Funny how hindsight gives you perfect vision, a lot of the resident experts and junior watchers were very happy about Rance's selection at the time. In fact they demanded he be picked. 'Absolutely wonderful, massive, perfect selection.'

Emma Quayle wrote a book on that draft, and in it she shows the Hawk's recruiters rated Rance very highly

I know I'm in a minority, but I prefer Rance in the forward line to Polak. He's younger, he's quicker and he's a better kick for goal.

Yeah it was interesting reading ..the sort of stuff you get from interested supporters with perhaps less than perfect knowledge of the potential draftees.

Others have answered this question

He obviously could at junior level .... that leads me to think in time he will be able to do that at senior

hate to repeat myself but the kid needs time

Without having any solid reason for my opinion, I agree.

Just like so many others on our list, Alex needs to be given some time.

Out of curiosity was there anyone you fancied at the time?

Just watching Tomahawk tonight and was thinking that it took him 4 years and a change of position to start to show something.

I just feel that Alex may just be in the same boat. The time will come when it will click. Confidence may just be the Key.

For what it's worth, the word on Alex is that he's always been "very coachable".
With the shallowness of our list at the moment, it's probably worth persevering with someone of his dimensions who clearly wants to do everything he can to improve. He's not really an AFL standard footballer at the moment, but it's not outside the bounds of reason that he may improve enough to get there.

Didn't have any knowledge of the kids available. Was interested in the argument going at the time between Cotchin/Morton at 2.

In retrospect Cotchin seems a no brainer.

Interesting looking back at that draft in retrospect.

- Cotchin number 2 fully justified

- Putt gone (did he even play in the Coburg seniors?)

- Gourdis who was rated top 20 by some a steal in the PSD (but the recruiting knocks on him seem to have been justified)

and finally

- Rance, his good points there for all to see - Phsique, hardness

but wow can't we see why he slipped. He just can't mark, kick or spoil. Not enough to continue with past this his current contract IMO, but I'd love someone to show me this post in a few years shaking thier heads at how wrong I was.

Easily our worst against the Hawks.

Tomahawk kicked 3 goals and 4 goals in his first two matches, he has averaged 1.3-1.4 goals per season every year he has played. He has slightly increased his marks and possessions.

Bottom line, he has not improved a lot, and he was never as bad as he was supposed to me. Second bottom line, he could mark and kick from game 1, skills that Rance does not have and is not likely to wake up with any time soon.

1.3-1.4 goals per season isnt flash for a forward.
