Alex Rance

Very lucky to not get dropped. Can barely hold a mark and regularly goes to ground and loses his feet. Not contributing.

Must be in the coaches good books. Other than that I can't explain it.

Maybe does enough Kellaway dives on the ball to suit the coaches I suppose.

The attempt to try him forward is pretty lame don't you reckon, dude?

Computer says: Fullback, or bust.

Yeah. I'm not sure what Dimma's trying to find in him.... especially in attack.

Maybe keep playing him to 'impress' WC or Freo for a possible trade.

I thought he showed a little bit in his first couple of games, but really not much since then. I think he's a brave player, but he isn't showing much (any?) improvement. Will need to show something before seasons end, or it could be goodbye. If we had a better list, he's be looking shakier than he is now, but it might boil down to how many new players we want to draft rather than how many doubtful players we want to move on.

I actually like the look of Rance up forward, always good to have a bigger body up there to help the other forwards
& his attack on the ball + his 2nd efforts when the ball is indispute create pressure on the opposition backs.
Its not like the kid is missing easy shots on goal he's kicked a few from set shots & snapped another nice one the other week.

I still think he'll play in defence eventually but happy to keep him ticking along up forward.
Rance will be one big unit in years to come & with a bit of experience & confidence will make a fine hard at it footballer.

If the coaching staff want to give him an extended run to see what he's got to offer then IMO it should be up back in the position he was actually recruited in - FB. Stop trying to turn him into something that he's not ala Edwards the last few years. People might say it's ludicrous that he will make it as a defender but IMO it's even more ludicrous he will make it as a forward given his poor marking ability which is more of a necessity up front.

You can take as many marks as you like up forward but at the end of the day they count for nothing if you can't slot the pill thru the big sticks.
One name that comes to mind is Chris Tarrant a forward who IMO is playing the best bootball of his career as a defender.
BTW you don't need to mark the ball to kick a goal ;)

So you want a player as a long-term forward who can't take a mark and struggles to keep his feet when the ball is loose on the ground? May god help us. :help

A poor version of Scott Lucas!
on sunday he fell over again when his opponent stood up and ran away from him,

He spends more time on his hands and knees than on his feet. Gets eliminated from the contest by going to ground time and again

a theory.
the coaching staff reckon he can make it. to improve they want him to play AFL not VFL. Whilst in the AFL rather having him down back where his mistakes/problems cost goals they put him up forward. he can still work on 2 of his biggest problems there, contesting in the air, and keeping in contests on the ground.
when he has improved these parts of his game he goes back to fullback and becomes All-Australian. Simple, at least in theory.

If he is being played because they reckon thats best for his development, to me thats ok.
As an aside I'm in the camp that says Rance's best chance is as KPD.

Barnzy you sure have a way of twisting others posts, where did I mention long term forward?
I clearly said you dont need to mark the ball to kick a goal.

No, you don't but what's the point of having a 193cm target up forward who can't take a proper mark? This is also before factoring in his poor decision making, poor composure, poor skills, etc.

He's just frustrating me at the moment. Looks to be playing as a lead-up target but he drops or fumbles nearly ever mark whether uncontested or contested. He loses his feet, goes to the ground and his opponent runs off him with ease. Should've been dropped this week IMO.

When he gets it he kicks straight. I like him, big, strong, hard. Only played 21 games I am sure his game will keep getting better. Let the kid grow into is body.

How Rance continues to get a game is beyond me. Can't mark, no footy smarts and simply not AFL standard. Cut the losses, drop him and delist at year's end.

agree unfortunately. Should have tried to trade him last year. Obvious deficiencies that no amount of time will heal

WOW ....... Lets just sacrifice another tall kid who hasn't found his feet yet.
It's been said before, it'll be said again - the taller kids take time to develop.

Yes we've had dud talls before but this one's got something most of the others didn't...... A giant set of hairy testicles. The kid just doesn't take a backwards step and I love that in a footballer . This is something that is not taught or gained with experience. Skills, Composure and Keeping your feet are things that come with time, courage you are born with and cannot learn.

We just simply need to know if he can improve at AFL level.

In the situation we are in, I have no issues with continually playing him and developing him to make that decision at the end of the season. He is a big kid who is athletic and kicks straight at goal. His desperation has provided us a few goals too. Setanta at Carlton never looked like Rance as a footballer when he was 20, now he is getting some significant praise. Let's just see how he develops the second half of the year.

I understand the frustration with him as I feel it too, but again, I don't have an issue with seeing him given that role as he is playing to team instructions.
