Slightly off topic, but with the AFL likely footing the bill for this AFLX farce and the parlours state of footy in Tasmania, some figures from the Mercury today.

Funds pumped into GC suns last year $25 million
Funds pumped into Brisbane Lions last year $21 million
Funds pumped into GWS undisclosed
Pay packet for Gil McLuaghlin $1.74 million
Funds put into Tasmanian football last year $1 million

Deserves it's own topic TR, it's a disgrace.

The thing I took about our games was a) the pressure is still there and b) They worked for each other like last season.

I didn't see too many other games but what I did see is that they didn't bring the frontal pressure like the Tigers.

Great signs already.

Was mentioned a couple of times in the commentary and good to see that the style has already filltered through to the new guys.

Probably does. I’ll just add this then leave it alone for a bit.

$25 mill to GCS = $2143 per member
$21 mill to Lions = $983 per member

It's a warped landscape. Rip off the Big Bash all they like, but create new "clubs" for it. If see retired and/or suburban players pulling on the RFC jumper for this gimmick as mooted by McLachlan, I will turn my back.

an outrage. Burnie and Tamar folding while kids suck grape zooper doopers.

Action must be taken by football people.

Funds for GWS undisclosed could be double the amount of money flushed on the Gold Coast or at least 50% more. God knows how much they have wasted on this franchise.

The AFL have probably poured so much into the Giants that if they were to let the cat out of the bag then the Gold Coast Board would be seething like a jilted lover who had no ideas they were being stitched up.

Dont worry bout the state of the game in a State of the game (Tassie), or the Vic clubs who the competition and its success was founded upon.

the legacy of Andrew Demetriou

I can see how AFLX would be attractive for 3 and 5yos and if that is their target audience maybe they should televise it head to head with playschool at 9am. For me I couldn't get excited. Little pressure, easy goals, few contests, takes away all he exciting things that make the game of AFL exciting. Personally I can't see this lasting at AFL level. Mght be a game that people in general might like playing but there's been a similar comp played every year in Bali with teams coming from all over the place to compete.

you do the maths. they spent $200 million establishing GWS, plus a minimum $20 million in handouts per season. they spent $100 million establishing GCS, plus around $20 million in handouts per season (albeit, probably less than GWS). we're talking upwards of $600 million. and that's what we know about.

he will always be known at the man who changed footy for the worse.

Sat down last night for an hour of free tv time. Played back our AFLX game on IQ. Two minutes in I smacked myself in the face and turned the 2nd half of the GF on instead

Not really for me. A bit of a 'who gives a *smile*?' cup.

However as a constructive suggestion. Is this what the format AFLW should be playing? Smaller field, but at the same time less congested. Most importantly, less players needed, so the limited talent pool can be spread more easily across teams.

Watched 5 minutes of one of the games and had enough. The compressed air release was the best part, and that gave me a rash. Listening to the commentators trying to get excited about nothing was cringeworthy.

Might have a place somewhere in the world. As an option for viewing sport on TV, nah.

Great suggestion PT. I was only saying to someone the other day part of the problem with AFLW is that the size of the field and the lesser strength/skill of the women means it is so much harder to get the ball out and score. Women (and some men!) tee off closer in golf and play fewer sets in tennis. This is not much of a departure from this.

But the fewer players and the talent pool piece is also a great point.

Demtriou defined his own performance and therefore salary packet by expansion success. He earned $560K in his first year 2004, 4 years later he was on $1.4mill and in his last 7 months he was paid $2mill. Expansion success ie how many more games he could create for TV rights regardless of long term effectiveness. What a great achievement for his own personal wealth.
