Adem Yze

And from the outside looking in some senior players coasted along with x amount of premiership medals around there neck thinking they are above the "team",
This laid getting repeated, but to me, the only premiership player who was fit and that wasn't near his best this year was Short.
DRioli, Broad, Nank, Vlastuin were all great.
Bolton want far off, considering the role he played- deeper forward.
Baker was good.
Balta tried- but has shown he isn't at this best when moved around.

So who are these coasters?

If you rate Boltons season you are easily pleased, Nank not a bad season but far from his best, Baker's was close to his worst season, Balta looked uninterested at times but may well be as you say, from being moved around, Rioli, Broad, Vlastuin all three get a tick of approval from me.

We were competitive in a lot of matches with only 26 fit players on our list.
Yze pre season said his game plan revolves around bookends Lynch and Gibcus.
Which games? Our average losing margin was just under 50 pts. We got smashed in more games I can remember for the season. Awful season.
I cried so much, smashed 8 tv’s, karate kick the cat 4 times, punch the door in twice and shat my pants.

I am wondering if the reason so many players want out / seemed disengaged this year is because they were disappointed in the club for not appointing McQualter. Not that that they didn't come to like Yze, but that from the moment the club didn't appoint McQualter, they started to wonder about whether club was truly loyal to anyone.

Interesting thought.
Not often a stand in assistant gets promoted to snr coach & there's been mixed results when it has happened.
Do you think it would have made a big difference to our situation if Mini had gotten the job?

Yes especially from the senior core with their fake injuries

There heart was ripped out when the club betrayed them

So the ones that don’t want out and have stayed really didn’t like McQualter?

both were very good canditates

They went through a pretty thorough process with the decision, it would be unfair to say they simply picked one over the other and loyalty was the factor.

Biggest question mark for Yze is his ability to motivate.

His ability to tactically see the game was well known. It's why Mebourne gave him the role it did overseeing it's game day strategy, But as we saw with Dimma coaching is a lot more than that.

Said earlier, his motivational ability is really going to get tested this year.

Yes its a tough situation for him (injuries, players realising they will play in losing teams etc) but if he can't turn around effort he won't have a coaching career.

We still have 14 games to go. There are already signs of players checking out. He needs to create an environment to turn that mindset around.

Posted this in May.

He was dealt a harsh hand, but in season 1 it still has to be marked fail because of the bolded above.

The exodus of players, that whilst have their own individual reasons, collectively has to raise some concerns.

Very outside in, and just a hunch - Does he have the emotional intelligence, social skills/influence and strong personality for a great senior AFL coach?

Most successful coaches have most (or all) of the above. Early days, and difficult to know from the outside, but not sure he's displayed them yet.

Hopefully he develops into the strong, passionate, instinctive leader of young men our club needs in the role.

Did Hardwick have it? He definitely didn’t at the end of 2016 - 7 years into his tenure.

What Yze needs is a strong support crew. He will never have every criteria locked down and that’s where the people around him come in.

He won’t have a Balme or a Gale around him like Hardwick did.

This is where the club needs to invest.

I’m more inclined to the view that if these senior players want out because they are yearning for Dimma and therefore haven’t connected with Yze, it reflects poorly on them as professionals. It’s a huge contrast with players like Broad, Prestia and Lynch.
Why is it usually the players fault in these scenarios? What if they can’t connect because there’s issues with the coach? What if he’s a fraud or a dud.

The debut videos show he's much closer to the players than what Dimma was. Hugo, Mansell, Miller and Mozza have shown more confidence under Ooze than Dimma. Maybe he's shown bias more to the younger ones and knows the older ones are too hardwired into Dimma's way.

I’m thinking the new breed coming through will develop an emotional attachment with Yze.
Well let’s hope so.
I wonder how his psychological tests measured at.
And let’s not forget that the club didn’t run the normal run of the mill coach search as per reported.
But who really knows what the rigours of the process were.
Time will tell if they have outsmarted themselves.
Otherwise it will be an arduous journey for all of us.
