There was an interview given by Brendon in which no changes in the game plan and no involvement in list management was mentioned.
Mini later said something along the same lines.
And there were none.
We played better early but our forward line just couldn’t cut it at all.
The only meaningful change that could have been made was Balta forward, but that didn’t occur until the season was effectively over.
Sounds like Mini was irrelevant. Can’t believe he’s even being considered if that’s the case.

That was McQualters decision though. Not a directive from Gale or anyone else. He made an occasional positional move but not much changed at all post Hardwick.

Dimma was such a commanding figure and his retirement came as a complete shock.

Our two clear favourites to succeed him had gone elsewhere. The club had built itself up with the arrivals of Hopper and Tarrant and that wasn't working and Lynch was gone and Jack, through no fault of his own, wasn't coping. It was all happening very quickly. Costs a lot of money to run Richmond and I think the Club itself was wondering what was around the corner.

Like sending a son to war and telling him to be careful. Trying to hold on.. not willing to let go.

Starting the year off with Jack, Cotchin, Dusty and Graham all playing in the forward line was the first mistake. Too slow and opposition team defences were waltzing it out.
Things just got worse from there.
That was on Dimma.

Pardon my ignorance for asking this: why was Mini Dimma instructed to stick with the same game plan/players throughout the year?
My take is that he was told to stick to it. I was in a briefing and the way he deferred to Tim Livingstone indicated a pretty short rope. Xavier in another briefing alluded to the same thing. Both coaches highlighted that limited change was an option but that there were various factors at play. But they also strongly believe that the basic gameplan is OK. It just needs tweaks and a little more commitment/workrate. (The workrate level was alluded to by Mini.)

My take is as was said above/elsewhere, we need speed (Smith, Campbell, Coulthard, Juddy, Green (??),,,,,), better disposal (Brown, Banks, Sonsie, Campbell, Coulthard, .....) and I strongly believe back to better workrate. (Note: GWS workrate is off the charts imho and the results are showing.)

Well, actually, I'd say quite the opposite. It gives us ability to check out other skills that coaches need. He might want to change our game plan for all we know, but needs an off season to do it.
That said, I prefer the refresh of an outside coach.
It "feels" better having an outsider come in with different ideas (you could argue our Assistants should have done that), than staying with someone inside the tent.
If the club think Mini is better than everyone else, so be it.

I heard this interview. I heard Balme say it as well. They didn't want large scale changes mid season, so asked for someone to maintain the status quo.
I don't recall the bit about not having a say in list management, but definitely heard the no change to game plan and have posted it before (probably in the Mini thread)

I remember hearing something about list management was on blair and livingstone in a post match presser once.
Said it was a MC decision not the sole decision of the head coach.

Not a lot I agree but he did some things
He did push both Dusty and Bolton further up the field and played both of them on ball much more.
He moved Baker forward
He moved Vlastuin forward as a in game move a couple of times

Thanks for the information, much appreciated. Do you know the motive behind such directives? I'm curious as to the benefit in doing so...
Nah, they were close lipped on how and why the coaching/match committee was set up as it was. It was stated that Tim headed up the MC. That may have changed after a few weeks but straight after Dimma left the message we got was that Tim took over some responsibilities that often lay with the head coach. In some ways that makes sense. Gradually change all the accountabilities and don't over stretch the new guy specially mid-season.
