Acceptance - we are now a middling side

crazy isnt it?

In all my years ive seen some pretty crazy stuff on here,

But i reckon vilifying and retiring off our champs

And trading out very good players in their 20s

After round 4, when we are a game out of 6th

Is the craziest thing ive ever read????

- Cotch needs to get to 300 games. You have to treat your legends with respect. I would play him off half back for a few games in the Luke Hodge general type role.
A thousand times this sort of mentality.

I may be more sentimental than business-like, but after carrying us through the disaster years and then on to 3 premierships, Cotch, Jack, etc deserve their milestones and to go when it suits them. Maybe they could have retired at the end of 2022, but I’m happy with our approach. I never want us to be Hawthorn, pushing Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis out the door. I would rather the joy of watching our heroes’ final games and celebrations than betray them for an indefinite better shot at a premiership. Did Geelong need to do it? Did it work for Hawthorn?

I would be swapping Hopper and Tarranto through the middle rather than having both of them there so much of the time. Tarranto I reckon is very well suited to the mid/forward role and would probably enjoy it too.

DS

I agree,

Weve paid a heap and dimma wants to play with his new toys,

Fair enough

But the best mid set up needs more speed and agility.

Luckily we have the fastest most agile mid in the comp.

Set up A : dion, tarranto, $hai

Set up B : marlion, hopper, $hai

Combos thereof with bakes, danny, cotchy rolling through

Dusty sits at FF 90% for 2 months

Maybe we can ask Kinga if we can just swap Tarranto and Hopper for Green & Kelly.
He won't notice the difference

Absolutely HS.
Cotch and Jack are Richmond legends and deserved to be treated like it.

I would also add the the club would be crazy to trade out Vlaustin, Graham, Short or Broad. They are the next level of leaders, the guys that will be needed to drive culture and keep the Richmond man legacy alive. Any rebuild will be much slower if the culture that is now at Tigerland needs to be rebuilt as well.

I hate the 'Richmond Man' label, it's as meaningless as the term 'un-Australian', plenty of hubris and attempts to project the club as the demigods of player management (which we are not!) Sydney Stack a case in point, when he's firing he's a 'Richmond Man', when he's off the rails he's someone else's problem. Let's just stick to 'good character' as boring as it sounds.

I hate unaustralian, but love Richmond Man.

Although if we are serious about inclusivity,

It should be Richmond Person.

If we recruited jordan degoey, wed just have to explain why he can play for us without being a Richmond Person.

I think Stackman keeps his richmond man title. Its a family and it unconditional - you dont generally recind a childs surname when they *smile* up.

You have to create and build organisational culture,

And as jingoistic as it may feel,

Youve gotta foster belonging and ownership etc,

And good character doesnt cut it.

but i hear you and get it. Ive fought with it myself and lost. I usually contradict my core belief systems whenit comes to footy and racehorses

I always hate when sportpeople have a great victory and thanks God, because of the implication that God clearly deserted their opponent.

Same but different

And yes, Cotchy is to Richmond Man, what an ameoba is to kelly slater

Speaking of Stacky does anyone know where he’s playing or how he is going ?

Disagree vehemently, even if Sydney fails he is/was a Richmond man, you are trying to create an internal set of values that build culture. We were the first club to move away from the macho BS footy club cluture and part of a Richmond man was being yourself, good bad or indifferent. The club does a power of work with minority communities in ways that make us a nonconventional football club in many senses. Peggy and Benny led that culture, being a Richmond man was all tied up to that. Good character is a given the Richmond man is way beyond that. It's one of the key reasons we built a dynasty and just about every club has copied it in one shape or form. It's not about being perfect, its the complete opposite.

Prefectly said Scoop.

The "Richmond man" is the single biggest pillar that Dimma and the clubs leadership have brought in during his time.

It is the reference point for all players and coaching staff to defer to. Both on and off field.

I agree, The Roos have the Shinboner spirit, Swans have the Bloods (what was it?), Hawthorn the Family Club. They’re just cliches, catchphrases, buzzwords etc.

Good post Scoop. I agree with Bully in that sounds a bit cheesy but it should strengthen our culture.

I don't know why but these injuries have given me a real sense of clear air about this season.

I think the MC will be forced to make some changes that we should have made anyway. And we'll also be forced to set and forget the superstars who made us super.

No more rests or supporting roles for Jack. He's the main man again.

He'll respond.

No more cocaptains. Cotch is captain again in all but title.

He'll lift.

Cumberland, Sonsie, Clarke, Sampson, Miller all get a solid block to show their talent.

Our established A grade guns get to solidify and take responsibility. Bolton, Dusty, Prestia, Baker, Balta. Maybe Taranto and Hopper find their rhythm.

The more I look at it, the more I see a side with leadership, and enthusiasm. Talent, potential and experience.

The tip towards youth means inconsistency. But we can challenge anyone.

No Lynch is the only real pain. But we do have Dusty.

I want to see Bauer with Jack or on his own at times. Might be the same, but.....give it a go.

I like Bauer.

It was his turn on the merry-go-round on Saturday.

He was clean and read the ball well, but played half back like a full forward, resulting in a fair bit of defensive chaos.

Our bewildering tall development roulette wheel will mean that he's got a bit of time in the 2's.

Unless the MC goes totally insane.

Couldn't agree more. Pseudo-psychological claptrap espoused to give people hope that they can do something to influence their chances of success.

It's uncanny how 'great culture' and winning always go hand in hand.

So encouraging people to aspire to be better people to achieve team goals.

Sounds awful.

That is such an important point. Players come - and stay - for a good culture. And that takes so long to build, but (figuratively) moments to destroy.

Thanks for this post. I felt excited reading it! You should be in motivation training.

I didn't say it was awful, just that it has stuff all to do with being a good player or team.

We can talk all we want about sitting around doing triple H or triple R or triple M or whatever it was and feel great about it all, and that's wonderful but we are kidding ourselves if we think it made a difference in winning flags.

We won flags because we had a collection of good players who combined well in a team and because we had Dustin Martin.

People need something to hang on to to give them belief that they can have success, so we like to find some magic ingredient that unlocks the potential to be great.

Truth is you win or lose based on how good you are at footy and everything else is just fluff.
