AFL 2024: Tigers excited by progress of ‘pretty handy’ Tom Lynch
Dustin Martin had another day off the track but the Tigers aren’t concerned as anticipation builds for Tom Lynch’s comeback.
Richmond midfielder Jack Graham says watching Tom Lynch make “actual progress” has lifted spirits at the Tigers as they dream of a 2024 with their star forward back on the field.
Superstar Dustin Martin was absent from training as the Tigers hit the track in an open session at Beaconsfield on Tuesday, but there is minimal concern over his ankle issue as they build towards their first pre-season match against North Melbourne in a month’s time.
The club said the triple Norm Smith medallist was undertaking rehab work at Punt Road after rolling his ankle training last week, but he was expected to rejoin the main group on Wednesday.
Graham said excitement was building at the club as Lynch, who was cheered on by teammates as he ran laps in the wet at Punt Road last week, continued to make strides after his 2023 season was cut short to only four games by a foot injury.
Lynch had finished the previous campaign with 24 goals in his last five games, and the Tigers struggled to replace the 31-year-old as Jack Riewoldt topped the goalkicking with 32 in his final season.
“It’s great just to see Tom out and about, running on grass for the first time in eight months or whatever it was,” Graham told reporters on Tuesday.
“It’s been tough for him, but at the same time you probably wouldn’t know what he’s been through, the energy and the vibe he brings to the club – he just rocks up every day with a smile on his face.
“To see him actually progress and get out on the field is great. I’m not too sure on the time frame with him, but it’s going to be handy to have big Lynchy back.”
Graham said he was pleased by his own fitness after being carefully managed through the opening stages of the pre-season.
The 25-year-old missed three games with a hamstring strain in the first half of last season and also played through injury in the run home as the Tigers fielded heavily inexperienced sides in the final few weeks.
The South Australian, who is a restricted free agent at the end of this season, said the club was “in a really good spot” as it entered 2024.
“(New coach Adem Yze) has come in, fresh faces, fresh voices … it’s been good so far,” he said.
“Last year I think I had about three weeks of pre-season and then straight into round 1, so I’ve already smashed that, I’m feeling fit, body’s good … I just can’t wait for the games to come around.”
Graham said he liked the balance Yze struck between taking control of sessions and delegating to players and coaches.
“He’s pretty cruisy, he doesn’t say a lot but he lets the coaches do their coaching part, and obviously he’ll come in over the top and say what he wants to say,” Graham said.
“That’s when I think everyone goes, ‘ooh, yep, Ooze is talking’.
“He hasn’t come in and tried to demand everything, he’s just come in and let the senior players and the leaders show what we can do, and he’s got his little parts here and there which is good.”
