2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

Whilst I love the 2019 and 2020 premiership wins, the above is also what makes 2017 so special. Sure, it ended 37 years of nothingness, but it was also the whole "Richmond are rubbish" narrative that seemed to be spilled and is still held today. A bunch of numpties and Dustin Martin. As if 1 player could elevate a bunch of crap players from nothing to the ultimate glory for 3 out of 4 years (and excluding flu could easily have been 4 from 4).
I think there’s a fair amount of respect for what we achieved, I dont see the mockery of <2017 no more , it’s more the hope that the embers have well and truly died out .

He also has some temporary amnesia.....still silent on Clanger/Vloss incident in 2020GF.
Remember when Ablett went around sniping blokes only a matter of weeks after he was calling for a public execution when Dusty hit de Boer? He even had the gall to tell us that was different as the ball was in play... He lost me over his '18 year long meltdown about the "state of the game" and that a yr later finished him off as far as i am concerned. How he got on the rules committee in '18 is baffling to say the least!

Yeah I don't think we've ever seen before or after our premierships, that sort of level of disrespect to a premiership team. The fact that they are now known as a dynasty level premiership team, it just pours scorn on the amount of crap that our players were given at that time of being rubbish players but with Dustin Martin to elevate them. So many pundits that let their personal feelings about the club to cloud their vision IMO.
They still do to this very day. Ditto oppo fans, which only makes it all the more sweeter

Agree. He lost me when he started salivating the 'Richmondy' term on air every week.

They all thought we were going to be like the Dogs of ‘16. It really got up the noses of the media that we didn’t just take our drought breaking Premiership and bugger off to the bottom of the ladder. Personally, I think we’ll drop a little for a year or two, but when we’ve got some experience into the youngsters we could bounce up very quickly.
I even had ppl tell me in '18 we'll miss the the 8 "because the Dogs did", that was their logic!

Also statistically we won each of our flags in a different way in the Finals, which proves just how great a dynasty we had. it's also IMO why we had a dynasty. Compare that to Pies who won 3 Finals by a combined total of 12pts, that is not a dynasty team! The Lions/Cats/Hawks/Tigers dynasty teams of this century all had huge wins in the Finals.

The weird feeling about that 'lucky' Scumwood team is that it all happened way too soon. How many coaches have won an VFL/AFL flag in their 2nd year?? Plastic build or what. As you said, Lions, Cats, Hawks and us took years to build up to a premiership team.

Yep! The dynasty the AFL tried very hard to prevent!
It’s a shame we didn’t get more games into kids last year but hopefully we do this year. Im still hopeful of making finals and having an impact this year, but if it’s a bit clunky with a new coach, new gameplan and new young players each week, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to use our draft picks to trade up and get another few quality kids through the door, then bounce back with a side full of more experience youngsters in 2025.
The best thing is, in draft terms, this season is a free hit. We'll still end up with a great draft hand regardless of how the season goes.

...or put another way, "Don't get me wrong or misinterpret, but Grant Thomas coached possibly the best group of players not to win a premiership, which only serves to highlight his performance."

Yep his team The Saints are the opposite of a dynasty club. 1 Flag in 150 years. Says it all really. :)

Did you forget the sook he had when Bolton slapped a Sydney player and when Nakas hit the Sydney defender??
He is still recovering from that faithful night in 2020.
For apprantly a smart Bloke he is pretty stupid.
Richmond has always used Geelong as a stepping stone to a flag.
1967. 1980. 2017.2019 & 2020
you forget the record spanking we gave them in the 1969 1st semi, 25.17 to 7.7

We sure did, all very different but the rhetoric was different from the media (and thats what the majority of fans believe, they hear the crap spouted by so called experts and believe it).

2017 was we were the momentum team going into finals. Went into the GF after winning finals by 51 (geelong), GWS (by 36) and then beat the Crows by 48 in an apparent unloseable GF. I seem to remember most pundits were saying it was just going to be decided by how many the Crows beat us by - so essentially we were lucky for this flag, got the Crows on an off day

2019 we lost Jack R early in the season so our 2 pronged attack wasn't what we wanted. We bltized through the year though, this was when the media really started to spout the MCG issue that we play too many games there. Its so funny hearing Interstate fans talk about this, I just say, well where do they expect us to play our home games and our away games against other MCG tenants. No-one can answer it but they just scoff the same line, so apparently the MCG was the only reason we could win.

So then 2020 comes around and we made finals, beat the Lions and Port on their home deck and then comfortably beat the Cats by 5 goals even though we were down by 1 player due to the knockout of Vlastuin so early in the game. This was when the "state of the game" started and they ended up changing the game.

It sounds so juvenile when you write it down now, all from the media end. Instead of actually acknowledging that the side was a very good side, they came up with every excuse and then changed the game by force in order to stop our run.

It was funny I flicked to Fox Footy during the week and it had come close games on, it was our Rd 2 game against the Pies from 2016 (the one where Grundy kicked the winner pretty much on the siren). I was enjoying watching the game, no robots standing on the mark, no ridiculous umpiring decisions (until the deliberate paid against Vlastuin with less than a minute to go that only the Pies would ever be given). It was just a better game to watch than the game we have now.

Genuinely funny. On the one hand. He bags us for being awful. On the other. He lauds our team performance. I don’t mind what he says from time to time but he had no respect for us at all when he coached against us and to be fair to him, we weren’t great in those days. But just trying to remember how many flags the mighty party boys (St Kilda) have actually won?
Ummm…..oh yes….. one…… and they never actually paid their players their full salaries. Barry Breen for one, took pennies on the dollar to help them out.

Did Thommo have much to say after we won in 2019? And then went back to back in 2020? I don’t know. Genuinely curious. Maybe he was effusive in his praise. Sort of suspect not.

I agree BJ17 but it took the 3rd flag for that to occur.

We were still being underrated, laughed at a bit and scorned as unworthy even after we had 2 flags in the bag, GWS didn’t really count from their perspective even though we beat the lions away and the cats to get there.

The pies and Dees were / are talked about being dynasty teams after one flag while were one then two hit wonders after 2 flags, as if you can fluke 1, let alone 2 flags, best team wins it.
