2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

True but at the end of the day on average we fielded the 3rd oldest team per week and finished 13th. That’s close to diabolical in my opinion. An example.. Instead of playing Pickett as the pseudo key forward, we should’ve been playing Bauer (when not injured), Samson, Cumberland, anyone who is actually a forward. McIntosh was gifted games, Grimes, whilst captain so potentially harder to drop, was gifted games. I recall a game where Grimes gave away 3 goals purely through stupid acts, like handballing out of bounds. We definitely had players to come in for those two mentioned (Banks, Brown, Trezise etc). Nothing should be sacred next year.
Older sides win flags, the evidence of the last few years is indisputable. We were tilting at "one last dance" of course our list was going to be old.

We drafted 5 top 30 picks the year before to fix that, we traded in two hopefully A grade mids for 5 years of A grade work, we are loaded up with picks in 2024, we know what needs to be done. The changes are happening. We are trying to retool without bottoming out. Will it work? Dunno, but there is a plan.

@caesar Question mate, has my boy Shorty bulked up in person? He looks bigger in photo's.

And can you give us the top three bulked and slimmed down.

Jack Grahm looks much smaller.

I haven't really had that at front of mind although the two players that have hit me in the face as materially different are Sonsie who has seemingly had an 8 week body transformation and Balta appears to have come back a bit lighter and running on top of the ground, (don't get me wrong Balta is still a beast).

I don't really care about age. Cat's won a flag with an old list.
Well Cotch and Jack R retirement lowers the playing age. Lynch makes it old
Kmac, Graham have not been my best 22. But those 2 run well.
Our running stats are okay, just been playing poor football for 3 years. Can't win a close game for a few years. Can't win at Spencer St.

Jack Graham has been a good kick to a leading player. But we rarely play like that.
Its usually bomb it in.

i would like to see one of our forwards being the 'designated leading forward' as i think we have some skill and ability in the mids that could utilise that player while maybe leaving Lynch not far from goal square ....

our list being old wasnt the issue, the issue was the average age of the playing sides each week. the fact that we werent close to finals yet kept playing the old guys was an issue. only time we really changed it up was round 24, just way too late.

Also, yes im very happy with what we’ve done in the draft and trade space over the last few years, just not happy with the older sides we kept naming all season. Should’ve been more rotation of young guys.

Rule of thumb for me is that a real premiership contender needs around half the side at 100+. Even the so called Baby Bombers had 11 players with 100+. So yes in tends to be older sides that win

There will be exceptions but even our 2017 had 10 players over 100 and Vlaustin at 96

We were never out of the finals until the last week or two, weren't going to play kids before then.

Judge it this year. Round 1 will tell us a lot.

The way he hops off the machine, it looks like his right foot is made of glass 😩

Think it was an act, he was playing up to it and giving the Tiger army the thumbs up that he is in good shape with the foot.

The club knows that this is the most common question, "How's Lynch's foot?" besides "How's Dusty doing?"

This is PR post. The club wouldn't do it unless they thought he was on target for Round 1 today. That might change in three weeks, three hours, or three minutes but as of today, things are moving in the right direction.

I’m not going to join the kicking debate but will point out that I too worked as an analyst for a major financial institution and know how easily stats can be manipulated to get the outcome you’re looking for.

What constitutes a particular stat, what parameters are set before something is considered an outlier and which stats you choose to use all impact the final narrative as to what is/isn’t working.

As a result I always have a smile when I hear someone say I’m 100% right because the stats says I am.
I'd take stats over my own eyes every day of the way, i use stats to confirm if what i am seeing is right or not.

Good post, great link.

The comments about tensions between clubs and Champion Data near the end were interesting. I think CD’s detailed stats have been found wanting in recent years and this was never more evident than their inability to capture our dominance from 2017-2020 in their numbers. Of course, they have a cosy little exclusivity arrangement with the AFL and therefore no real incentive to improve.
IMO CD's biggest issue is there data is bidden away. If it was made available ppl would have a better understanding of the game etc.

It's exciting seeing it all unfold, esp post next season.

FWIW our ave age before we got Naismith was 10th which is more in line with where it should be. As above it's about the ave age of our side we play each week which should tell us the story.

Yep. Dimma constantly said we evaluated our stats differently to the norm. For years we were pretty much the lowest overall possession side in the comp yet somehow managed three flags in four years.
It's not always how much ball you get during a game. It's what you do with the *smile* thing once you've got it.
