2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

Just stopped by this morning and spent some time looking at the defenders doing a drill where they, one on one, try to stop players leading and marking. Couple of observations:

- Lefau is one hell of a physical specimen and tall enough to go up against big players.
- Naismith looks in amazing condition and certainly not like a player who has come to play in the VFL. He was going full gas, cleaned up his opponent in one drill.
- Grimes had a heavily strapped left thigh and looked slow
Great news on the first two.
Gees it's hard watching the great man struggling with injuries. He had more than his share in his early years and had a cruel hammy. It might be all precautionary. I'd love to see him go out on a high in 2024.

Has anyone seen Daniel lurking around the goals kicking a few snapshots at training? It could be my early Christmas present from Yze.

He's always been too classy for the backline.

Put him back where he belongs and where his composure, ball sharing and forward nous have made a real difference in the past.

For three years I have been deprived of my favourite Tiger playing where he is most suited and most dangerous.
It’s funny you say he should go forward. I was thinking he’d be great on ball. There was a game last season, can’t remember which one, and he had a stint on ball and he was clearing out of the centre reminiscent of Judd and Nathan Foley. I reckon Dan can have a third part of his career as a mid.

Optimus is at a tipping point IMO. I have Balta playing back, so where does that put Grimes.

Assuming everyone is fit, does he play as a KPD in place of either of these 3? Balta, Gibcus, Young?
Assuming everyone is fit, does he play as a medium sized defender in place of either of these 2? Broad, Vlastuin? I'd think next cabs off the rank as mediums are Brown and Tresize anyway.
Assuming everyone is fit, does he play as a small defender in place of either of these 3? Rioli, Short, Baker? We also want to get games into Banks / Brown potentially in this position too.

IMO Grimes has lost a little bit of pace, which takes him away from playing on smalls which he did so well in the past, and without that elite closing speed that made him so good in the post Rance era as a KPD, he's probably now a bit undersized as a tall forward.

I don't think he's in our best 22 anymore.

Yes, it's sad to say it but Grimes could have a season like Port's Tom Jonas this year, with games being pumped into Brown, Banks and Trezise...

Yep. I remember the game.
When he went forward something seemed to happen more often than not.
But I'm not sure that his dicky ankle is sound enough for the constant twisting and tackling of the midfield.

I dropped by even more briefly:

New to the not training with main group:
Trisize: (thumb heavily strapped)
Brown: (shoulder heavily strapped).

First I have seen of Dan Rioli

That's it, most of the talls in rehab, the only 3 minutes i saw of a drill today had Balta being on the end of the chain but that may be just because of lack of tall participation.

That's it sorry

I wonder when the first injury report will be released and if there will be more transparency.

I once worked at a place that could best be described as a circus, i didn't get fired for laughing about it. if u can't laugh ya got nothing.
one of my all time favourite job was a clown at the cannon ball, all went well until they fired me

He should’ve been an AA half back last year (God knows how Saad pipped him. Well actually, Rioli plays for Richmond, so it’s no real surprise). But he is electric down back, and a real link player between our backline and forward line. Not too many players in the comp can do what he does, with the repeat sprints and elite ball use
AA has lost it's all of it's credibility completely, the fact we have a media personality who uses his own forums to attack or plraise certain players, depending on whether or not they play for Port Adelaide, on the selection panel needs a serious explanation.

I agree Rioli is best served at half back, plus if we have some med/small fwds that step up next yr he won't be needed fwd anyway. As above with our faster game style he gives us what we need down back anyway.

Word from the Club via the the Coach is we need to give the kids some gametime, i wouldn't be surprised if Grimes for example misses some games in order to give Brown/Trezise for example some games etc. it's what we need to do. As ever form/injury will take care of that anyway.

Half back is the easiest position on the ground and should be used to give kids game time and somewhere to play your fringe players. Oleg Markov is a premiership half back flanker.

You don’t see Brisbane playing Charlie Cameron at half back. If they did he'd be an 8 time AA.

In 2016 2017 a young DRioli transformed the way we played playing in the forward line. His run and carry and attacking play inspired his senior team-mates who followed his lead in this regard.

Dimmas game plan burned him out, like it has many others, but imo Daniel is a natural attacking creative small forward. His pace and tank make him even more valuable there.

Hoping Oozo sees this also.
