2024 Richmond Coach

The excuses for Mini and the game plan are coming through thick and fast, but there is no excuse for some of his baffling selections.
Selections were baffling prior to mini. I think you’ll find it’s a match committee thing and not mini in isolation.

That’s true, but you’d have to think the coach has a very large say in who does and who doesn’t play.

In 2016 we picked a lot of young players at the end of the year. I think players like Chol and Callum Moore made their debuts late. It turned out badly on the scoreboard. Not sure if that is the thinking and I am not defending it. Maybe it has something to do with Cotch and Jack's last games?

But some of it is baffling. Both Bauer and Banks have been dropped the last 2 weeks after playing pretty well. We still persist with Nank and Soldo when it is clearly not working and we have some players in really poor form.

Maybe they also want to keep the vfl group together for their last pitch at the finals? I don't know really.

I'm hopeful that Newman is the best coaching candidate. A Richmond man through and through, he's won a premiership at Box HIll and we need to do exactly what the Hawks have just done - make hard decisions and start a new era. I'm less certain Mini can do that with his history at the club - its all down to the club making the right decision.

Yes. but we still need to keep our core best players. Next year we may have a shot in getting two to three very good players (age, talent), this may boost our performance significantly.

To a point, so am I. Just careful not to fall in love with a past player as coach. Yes Tommy worked well. However, our procession of ex players weren’t great. Possibly for a number of different reasons. Tony Jewell got us a flag but didn’t have a long stint as coach. John Northey got the best out of our list. But we have had a lot of others with not much success. Bones Richardson, KB, Paul Sproule, Saint Francis etc. By all accounts though, Newy has been going ok and he would be strong on discipline. Pretty sure he initiated the “jumper does not touch the floor after a game as it has to be respected”.

Most of the successful coaches of late have coached well at clubs where they did not play. Matthews, Sheedy, Malthouse, Hardwick.

Now we know Mini has the job and has had since 2016, we should probably be turning our attention to the next appointment.
Our senior coach for 2032. Will it be Jack? or Grigg? Lambert maybe? Joel Selwood?
Whoever it is we need to make sure the succession contract is watertight.

I thought Mini Dimma would be appointing his own successor willing to endure a 9 year apprenticeship

Tie up all of the above, that way we can't lose.

olden day footy isnt very relevant , for most part former greats were thrust into roles with little to no apprenticeship , by comparison newy has been under the tutelage of clarko which augurs well

Whoever it is from that group, we need to make sure he knows who he's going to anoint as our senior coach for 2041.

Maybe not actually, Mini in his press conference today said he will interview for the job after the season finishes.

Didn't he say after "our" season finishes?

The bye week would be an opportunity to interview where the interviewee is at a club in finals.
