2024 Richmond Coach

We need a coach that has played in a flag

Someone that has been assistant coach to a premiership coach

Carr fits the criteria

Newman does not, neither does Mini

For me, all roads lead to Grigg

I hope and expect that when Geelong hopefully get kicked out of the finals race, Grigg is approached and asked to present.

The only risk is that just like Carr got promised the Port job, in a succession plan, Grigg is not offered the same by Scott and Geelong, hopefully Scott the narcissist rejects this.

We need Grigg badly

I don’t think Grigg will get the job but I would definitely look at getting him back as an assistant and I would also like us to have a chat to Nigel Lappin.

For me who we appoint as senior coach is only one piece of the puzzle. Who we surround him with is just or even more as important. Go out there and get the best.

Our 2017 coaching panel consisted of McRae, Leppa, Carracella, Rutten. Then when we lost Carracella we got Kingsley. All top rated coaches. I don’t see that now in the group we have.

Our fitness team was one of the best going around. Losing Burge last year was a disaster. No coincidence the Hawks are running out games so late in the year with kids. This area needs another overhaul.

Some of that has been the reduction in the soft cap and the salary Hardwick was getting. Next year the soft cap goes up and we won’t have a coach on $800k.

Where does Tim Livingstone sit in all of this? Is he still the right guy? Should we go after an Alan Richardson?

Then there is the recruiting department. Do we have enough people in that area? It’s Clarke and ????. We lost Thursfield to Norf. Has he been replaced?

The entire football department needs a major review.

Mini is a tactical dwarf he has been schooled by the opposition coaches two weeks running using similar tactics and failed to adjust.

Richmond needs to look further for a coach.

I hear Giansiracusa is a prick of a bloke. Source - father of very senior premiership player at the Dogs. (Very soft player too Giansiracusa).
Maybe we need a prick because the nice guy isnt getting anywhere

I went and watched yesterday for no other reason than to assess the tactical setup, sat up high to get a full ground picture.

What I saw was our coaching staff get dismantled limb by limb by Ross Lyon's crew.

St Kilda used numbers behind the ball to perfection and then expertly cleared the corridor to open it up for their ball movement. McQualter was talking about accuracy in his presser, well that's what happens when the opposition get direct shots and deep entries by owning the corridor there Sherlock.

The other thing that struck me after not seeing us live for months was how sharply we have declined. It's only a one game sample to be fair but we have really hit the wall like so many good teams do.

In hindsight we made a massive mistake by appointing a coach with ambition as a caretaker. He is coaching for his future, playing older players, injured players and in a manner that is to win, not develop. We've missed a golden opportunity to progress our list.

We should have put someone like Teague in the chair, who would have coached without ego and without emotional connection to players over a long period of time. I guarantee he would be playing kids and developing and finding out about them.

To me the criteria for our next coach is simple:

1. Have a clear tactical vision of their own. Doesn't matter what it is, the style of play for our next flag hasn't been discovered yet, we just need to know they are capable of designing a system. That means they have coached a team to success in their own right.

2. Be committed to regenerating the list via the draft.

3. Be accepting of a strategy where every player aged 25 and beyond on our list currently is available for trade immediately or moved on at the completion of their current contract.

4. Have the mindset and management skills to be able to concede competitiveness in order to build for success over the next 2-3 years.

Great post and i couldn't agree more !

Mini had zero desire to be senior coach until 3rd win

X Clarke was all set to take the reigns until players stepped in wanting mini as they saw him as a mcrae clone

They were worried x having a desire to coach would try change to much

Mini is in a tough spot..

Hear me out; he takes over when the club is still in with a chance to plays finals.. gets a few early wins.. gets a few pats on the back (both internally and externally).. finds himself in a position where he's widely tipped as the "clear frontrunner".. team puts in a few pathetic performances.. now looks like being chewed up and spat out

Now, I'm not saying I want him to be the next senior coach, but I don't think it's fair to be putting a line through his name just because of our recent poor form.

Realistically, he has inherited a game plan and structure than cannot be abandoned mid year when still contending for Finals. His only option was to keep picking the best 22 in his eyes and deploying the same game style to hopefully lead us to finals.

People that know him say he has a seriously smart football mind. I wonder what he could do with a full pre season. What would he change? What would he keep the same?

Again, I want to reiterate, I'm not campaigning for him to get the job.. but if Gale and co go through the process and pick him at the end of it, I will support their decision and go with it. After all, they're the ones sitting in on these meetings/ presentations.

There is still so much talent on this list. All we need is a system and structure that the boys can buy into.

Item 2 is interesting
We traded next years picks already

Yep and we are in trouble because of that.

We need to be getting back into the draft by trading and continuing to do so over the next few years.

It is such a shame we did the Hopper/Taranto deal. I know it is easy in hindsight but there were plenty of us with reservations at the time.

You put those two picks on the list and we hold pick 5 or 6 and we would be in a much stronger position. We could have looked at packaging it up for West Coast to do a deal for Harley Reid, who people tell me will be the best #1 pick of all time and maybe somewhere near Dustin as a player. That would have sured up our prospects dramatically.

Agree to disagree on elements of this.

9 weeks ago (8 games ago) we beat them pretty easily. We've made measurable changes since then. Really noticeable in gameplan. Midfield /centre bounce woes of the past 3 games were addressed to a degree. Still a few to easy exits straight out the front but we were leading centre clearances most of the game. Clear contrast to the previous 3 games.

We pressed too high and too narrow and they either went around us or through the centre corridor. That's not usual and we can normally counter that.

Sitting very close to the bench it was noticeable that there was a far higher level of confusion at interchanges. Players were unsure of where to go and how to structure. I noticed similar at a couple of reserves games where players came on and were slightly lost.

It comes across as almost too much change in gameplan, too quickly. The higher press is definitely a change and our spacing is just wrong. (On a side note, Collingwood was doing the same on Friday night in the 1st quarter and adjusted. You could even see McRae indicate it.) We didn't get our adjustment right.

I'm not convinced that we were seriously trying to make the 8 after the Demon's loss. I think we went all in at that game and after that have let this season be and are trying too work on gameplan changes for next year. I could be horribly wrong but the drop in intensity from our guys means I think the "cue is in the rack" to a degree.

Ohh and we lack speed, and when half our speedsters are out injured (Judson, Seth, Kaleb) or struggling to adapt to AFL (Steely) we have an issue.

Why are we persisting with consistent non performing veterans at the expense of youngsters with better form if that's the case?

1. Who's knocking the door down in the 2's ?
2. We played more youngsters vs the Doggies and looked totally lost. So I see the need for structure whilst trialling options for 2024.

And to answer Q1, only Sonsie comes to mind with Brown and Trezise being remote possibilities except their positions are covered by other young players or players not leaving soon.

It’s one of the biggest clubs in the land, Josh Carr is crazy.

Or.

It’s too big a job and those who know, know that the rebuild coach never makes it through to finals.
Given how Dimma seems to have found enough reserves of energy to continue coaching,,,,with a different team….it suggests he saw clearly what was coming at the Tiges and knew he couldn’t face it……reckon the next

I think this is far too balanced and sensible……much easier to call for Mini to go. Must admit though, I’ve had reservations about him as a coach from the start of his caretaker period, mainly because I think he is perhaps a little too close to the playing group and secondly, appointing an insider kind of removes the sense of a “new broom” being brought in which is what we might all be looking for…..But what you say has merit I think……he has been caught between a rock and a hard place and it may be that, given the top job, he will enter a new season with his own ideas and a fresh sense of what needs to be done. So….it’s tricky. Whoever gets the gig it’s going to be difficult given our current list and draft situation so it may be a bit of a poisoned chalice.
