2024 Richmond Coach

when Benny said something about 'finding the coach inside the club' that kinda references Chris Newman

Also, there is a real stigma placed on senior coaching candidates missing out on jobs.

This has hurt us with Mini being seen as such a short favourite.

Some won't go through the process with the high likelihood they miss.

This is why Leysy wouldn't be surprised if Benny parachutes a couple into the last stage.

i.e. Leppitsch. He looks to have everything we need after Dimma. i.e. big personality, tactically astute, experience, presence, Richmond way etc.

If we asked him to present with the final 1 or 2. Reckon he would.
I was thinking about that last night. Might be a need to change tact a bit here and overtly encourage a Leppa to have a formal crack at it.

Originally, for a few reasons, I wasn't sure about Leppa being a replacement for Dimma but looking at the shortlist, I'm thinking he might be preferable. This shortlist appears really underwhelming. Probably get the next Dimma out of one of them now that I've said that.....

I've had Leppa on my list since day one. He's the one. Perfect mix of local knowledge and the industry best knowledge at the Pies.

I'd take him over anyone else on the list.

Not that I particularly want him, but the best coach not coaching is Leon Cameron. GF and 3 x Prelims. Yes I know Ferrari and all that, but still had to overcome a bit

I reckon Cameron has one of the best footy brains out there

But he is too dour and failed with a list that needed more emotional support

So far from what we've been told so far Carr, Leppitsch, Graham, & Charlie Chaplin have withdrawn themselves from vying for the job and yet it's a plumb job that everyone wants?

Yeah. There's pros and cons.

The cons I think with Leppa are that he might be a bit Richmond "systemised" when maybe we need to break away from that. He can also be an overtly brutal and critical guy and some may say a bit over the top at times. (I've heard him a couple of times when he's been in that mode). Then again, you could counter that with the possibility that we might need a bit more upfront coaching right now and a little less of the Kumbaya approach.

Whatever, he just seems a better option than this shortlist which itself is maybe being a bit presumptuous given you don't know what these guys are presenting with, what their Head Coaching uplift might be etc. etc.

Leppa and Troy never withdrew as both had zero intentions of applying

Carr pulled out. Leppa didn;t apply. Not sure about Graham but Chaplin clearly put his hand up and wanted it but didn't get shortlisted:

"I haven't spoken to anyone from the Tigers," Chaplin revealed.

"You just wait, and if they want to have a chat then I'd definitely go down that path.

I expect Graham also missed out on being shortlisted

We can only go by the information we are provided with.

I suspect graham and chaplain are saying they withdraw to protect themselves but I think it’s clear they didn’t make the shortcut.

How is it protecting themselves if it's common knowledge they're using it as smoke and mirrors for their self-preservation? Those inside the industry would obviously know a lot more than we outsiders.

For me who we appoint as senior coach is only one piece of the puzzle. Who we surround him with is just or even more as important. Go out there and get the best.

Our 2017 coaching panel consisted of McRae, Leppa, Carracella, Rutten. Then when we lost Carracella we got Kingsley. All top rated coaches. I don’t see that now in the group we have.

Our fitness team was one of the best going around. Losing Burge last year was a disaster. No coincidence the Hawks are running out games so late in the year with kids. This area needs another overhaul.

Some of that has been the reduction in the soft cap and the salary Hardwick was getting. Next year the soft cap goes up and we won’t have a coach on $800k.

Where does Tim Livingstone sit in all of this? Is he still the right guy? Should we go after an Alan Richardson?

Then there is the recruiting department. Do we have enough people in that area? It’s Clarke and ????. We lost Thursfield to Norf. Has he been replaced?

The entire football department needs a major review.

The word I have is that Carr didn't want the job while Chaplin and Graham didn't make the shortlist.
"The word I have"

Also known as the article on AFL.com.au by Cal Twomey. FMD everyone acts like they have the hotline to Benny Gale

Yeh that was not a convincing presser at all. Looked like an amateur. Hard to listen to and didn’t instil much belief in him
It had probably just occurred to him that he’d lost his job. The little *smile* we call senior players can be thanked. Dusty jack and nank get a pass

I actually don’t think Mini is in the driving seat for this role - there have been too many non competitive games and qtrs now - Brisbane (whole game), doggies (1st qtr), Saints (whole game) and this is when our season has been on the line and we are fighting for finals.

You look at Essendon, blues, sainters all desperate to make the 8, whereas our team still looks contented - you can’t under estimate the weight of 3 flags in the back pocket of many of our players.

We no longer have the drive to overcome the many hurdles that come our way during the season, and we have had many many big hurdles
* Gibcus out for the whole year
* Lynch out for most of the year
* Hardwick for most of the year
* Pickett looming court case
plus the steady decline of Cotchin, Jack, Grimes, Broad.

Whoever takes over I think has an attractive squad to work with
* there is some decent experience to work around - Dusty, Rioli, Baker, Bolton, Nank, Lynch (if fit), Graham, Short, Prestia and Vlas plus Taranto and Hopper.
* there is some youth who have shown some small signs that they can play even if their opportunities have been slim - Couthard, MJ, Clarke, Banks, Gibs (obviously), Tyler, Bauer, Ryan, Sonsie and add Balta and Ross

So who is the coach most suited to blending a team that has no absolute elite young talent (Gibcus aside) which is normally a prerequisite to building a top 4 side (they all have them), can use our experienced players to sacrifice more individual success to build the next premiership team.

Its a 5 year exercise (minimum).

Question, do we need a teacher type (Clarko and Hardwick mould) given the leadership on the park or a tactician type (Lyon or Longmuir) or a motivator type (McRae or Nicks)

I think we are after the younger motivational type which would rule out a Leppa or Cameron.

The 5 year time frame is the only way we can bring in that top end elite young talent - say 3 hits at the top 5 draft picks (starting next year sadly).
