2024 Richmond Coach

You should never have the caretaker be one of the applicants. He should immediately remove himself from taking over if he has aspirations on coaching. It doesn't do himself and other applicants any favours if he takes the caretaker role. Feel the club has dropped the ball here.

Yep in hindsight it was the wrong call for all parties involved.

My main query about the process of appointing the new coach is the panel put together. Gale, Rothschild, Hartley, Livingston, Steinfort and Ponissi are more important than the applicants themselves. Are these panel members aware of the direction the modern game is heading to properly assess the football philosophies the potential candidates present? Do we have enough footy smart people on the panel with a fair idea of how successful football will look like in the near future? Do we have too many insiders that only know the Dimma way and don't have a holistic view of the game? I don't see too many past players or people with solid AFL experience from other clubs in that group.

Interesting post Harry. I'm not sure it's correct but definitely thought provoking.

Mini is in a tough spot..

Hear me out; he takes over when the club is still in with a chance to plays finals.. gets a few early wins.. gets a few pats on the back (both internally and externally).. finds himself in a position where he's widely tipped as the "clear frontrunner".. team puts in a few pathetic performances.. now looks like being chewed up and spat out

Now, I'm not saying I want him to be the next senior coach, but I don't think it's fair to be putting a line through his name just because of our recent poor form.

Realistically, he has inherited a game plan and structure than cannot be abandoned mid year when still contending for Finals. His only option was to keep picking the best 22 in his eyes and deploying the same game style to hopefully lead us to finals.

People that know him say he has a seriously smart football mind. I wonder what he could do with a full pre season. What would he change? What would he keep the same?

Again, I want to reiterate, I'm not campaigning for him to get the job.. but if Gale and co go through the process and pick him at the end of it, I will support their decision and go with it. After all, they're the ones sitting in on these meetings/ presentations.

There is still so much talent on this list. All we need is a system and structure that the boys can buy into.
The best post I’ve seen on this thread. Couldn’t have said it any better. Would love to be a fly on the wall watching the presentations for the future vision of the Club. Also I wonder how much the players and the culture they’ve built at the club comes into the decision making.

I didn't like Gale when he said we're looking for the next Dimma.Whoever it is let them be there own person.

Geez its starting to look like the Tigers have been run over by a truck and now just been reversed over if the word on Carr saying no is true.

Word was he was the man and the one Tigers had targeted.

My issue is somethings he didn't need a preseason to change they can be done immediately and leave a impression.

For starters team selection hasn't changed have a look at our beltings not one senior player dropped our kids take the rapt nothing to do with the best 22 you don't keep playing players not performing.

Our lack of intensity in games is alarming and even putting 4 quarters of footy last 2 weeks players checked out pathetic and all this endorsement from the playing group for him.

Poor tactics the week before the 2 rucks we went with didn't work so we don’t change it up or we let Bont tear us part and not put a tag on him very simple issues we didn't rectify.

Looks like the RFC has just fallen into a bit of a *smile* heap.
Is there any truth Carr was the one through ?

For me who we appoint as senior coach is only one piece of the puzzle. Who we surround him with is just or even more as important. Go out there and get the best.

Our 2017 coaching panel consisted of McRae, Leppa, Carracella, Rutten. Then when we lost Carracella we got Kingsley. All top rated coaches. I don’t see that now in the group we have.

Our fitness team was one of the best going around. Losing Burge last year was a disaster. No coincidence the Hawks are running out games so late in the year with kids. This area needs another overhaul.

Some of that has been the reduction in the soft cap and the salary Hardwick was getting. Next year the soft cap goes up and we won’t have a coach on $800k.

Where does Tim Livingstone sit in all of this? Is he still the right guy? Should we go after an Alan Richardson?

Then there is the recruiting department. Do we have enough people in that area? It’s Clarke and ????. We lost Thursfield to Norf. Has he been replaced?

The entire football department needs a major review.
Great post mate agree football department has dropped standards.

Just going on what the rumblings and musings I've read and heard.

I've got no idea.

Even after the era weve enjoyed which surpassed anything we could've have dreamed and wished for, it's like the spectre of old Richmond is showing up and looking over the shoulder in the misty mirror.

I reckon he means the next Dimma in the sense of someone who can connect with the players, build a premiership list and then go on to see success (eg a triple premiership success).

Not literally someone exactly like Dimma

If you wanted someone with exactly dimmas nose,

Youde have to cast the net over rugby and boxing.

Mini had zero desire to be senior coach until 3rd win

X Clarke was all set to take the reigns until players stepped in wanting mini as they saw him as a mcrae clone

They were worried x having a desire to coach would try change to much
Tailing is wagging the dog at present.
has since their last success I suggest.
aint nobody got time for that GIF

We have not traded next years picks. Only this years first round pick.
why do people still

If Mini gets the gig be ready for tail wagging dog. Will set us back decades. Hoping another 2 hammerings to see the season out will make it impossible for the club to appoint him. In saying that not sure i have the same confidence in this current regime to make the right and smart calls. Seems like Benny is the only one left with any smarts and he could well be slowly pushed. Need to remember that unfortunately a lot of people put their hands up for these positions in the club hierarchy purely for self gratification. It is what kept this club in the doldrums for decades. As others have noted these names dont fill me with a lot of confidence.

Impressive summary below but it would be good to know why Yze failed in the Giants and Bummers position.
