2024 Richmond Coach

We kicked 15G 8 that would beat most sides , scoring wasn’t the problem today matey it was saving them , how does cumbo help saving any of the 14g I spoke of
Fact it didn’t beat the Dees they scored 130 and won by 32 pts
Got smashed at centre clearances Couldn’t hold ball in our forward line So Dees kept getting never ending easy entries into their forward line (73 to our 45) No defence can withstand so many forward entries

Let’s just remember our next coach whether that be Mini or someone else isn’t going to get us to the Holy Grail without some serious off season trading. Our key forward stocks are *smile*.

So let’s assume Mini gets the job. Who stays as assistants/development, and in the likelihood of Cotchin/Riewoldt retiring, do either come on board in a coaching role ?
Really tough call.

Reckon Rutten is the right man for defenders. Balta improvement, Young etc

Lambert- ? Dunno his actual role. Too chummy and nice ?
Morris - Does he get Assistant gig and we get a new reserves coach?
Teague - Reckon we should replace with an up and comer who wants a top job
X - Clarke - Almost has a mortgage on his job due to the Indigenous players

Thoughts ??

Ps. I’d consider Riewoldt for forward role, as he has a super footy brain, but reckon Cotchy should take a year away from footy then see what he wants to do.

I’m more convinced than ever, we need new people & new ideas. At best this is transition and at worst a rebuild.

Far better foundation than Hardwick had in 2010, but this isn’t a top up job. Needs targeted recruitment (inc whatever can be achieved through free agents and trades) plus re-imagining of how we play. Midfield attritional ran out of gas today.

Is the club culture driven by a mixture of the admin, coach, & or playing group?
I’m talking more on ground than off, but if Gale goes that’ll include off ground too.

Club culture and ethos is fine, but game has changed and we need to re-assess on field to move with it. It’s a combination of coaches (plural), support staff (especially conditioning) and playing group.

You see I think that our game style is the best and will stand the test of time. Trying to move the ball forward, constantly looking to score and defensive pressure especially forward is the best game plan. It is why Pies copied it. You just need to have the players who have the pace, stamina and good mix of offensive/defensive mindset.

Largely true, but Collingwood have added better skills especially in passing the ball than we had. The game always evolves. We would force the ball forward and exert extreme pressure but we weren't doing the pinpoint passes that some teams do now in combination with forcing the ball forward and pressuring the opposition.

Depends really.
Melbourne forward line is a shambles. They have a 2 year developing forward and backup backman as their 2 talls. Broad Grimes Young will shut them down and Balta will have a field day.
So a 60 point thrashing is on the cards and cement Mini as the front runner!

You are right - that is what should have happened.

Unfortunately, this didn't age well.

We won the premierships because of our mental fitness. We had 2 to 3 years start. Our bottom 6 bloomed and everybody gelled together.
Collingwood have used the mental fitness aspect to get better.
Collingwood and Carlton get better due to fixing off field.
We will need to find anither point of difference.

What I find interesting is the applications have closed yet we are none the wiser on who has actually applied.

At this stage its only Mini.

Agree, and adding to it means finding other ways to play the game more optimally than everyone else. I think a small forward line is the future. Horizontal zone of influence > vertical influence. Kick 50m worm burners instead of 50m lob kicks to packs. Unpredictable, fast, hard to defend... the opposition will fumble it if they intercept and be forced to rush their kick, so we take away their ability to intercept mark and start a clean chain, while losing nothing offensively in those 50/50 situations kicking to packs.

Yep. I reckon it's all a fizzer. They'll just go through the formalities and appoint Mini in September.

There are 3 ex Richmond skippers out and about who can bring back IP - Knights, Newman and Wayne Campbell s sitting in the box at the Suns.

Campbell may well be a replacement for Benny at some stage though.

Throw in Grigga there are good Richmond men out there that can bring back IP.

Even throw in CONCA, currently running at Melbourne and spent time at Freo.

A bit early to be jumping at shadows imo.

surely there's a few guys who'd love to coach the biggest club in the land, if not then it's an indictment on them not us.

One of the problems for the next coach is the influence of the premiership players as a conservative voice.
If we want change, we might be struggling for a while.

The game yesterday was the worst possible outcome in terms of assessing whether Mini gets the job.

We looked so good in the first half. Brought back 2017 to 2020 feelings with the pressure and link up. But the same old issues came through:

- inability to stop momentum, particularly caused by umpiring decisions going against us
- lack of viable KPF
- failing to run out a game
- players' skillsets not aligned to our game plan

Most of the above aren't the fault of Mini. Recruitment / list management and conditioning are the main contributors. The stopping momentum and playing players in their rightful positions are within Mini's control.

I like Mini. But I feel the performance has been a result of a shot in the arm which usually accompanies a change in coach. Even the Suns have got it. I just fear if he gets the job, the same old standards will turn up for pre season and we will fall away. I'm leaning to fresh standards, fresh ideas, a new game plan etc. Watching yesterday showed you what talent a new coach would inherit. Bolton, Balta, Taranto, Prestia, Rioli, Ross, Vlastuin, Broad, Dusty, Baker, Lynch when fit, Gibcus, Coulthard, Banks, Cumberland, even Juddy, Sonsie etc. Nucleus of a very good team and I reckon a game plan developed around the strengths of these players is what we are looking for in a new coach.

As I have posted elsewhere, I am not adverse to Mini getting the gig as he has shown he can think on his feet during a game. Our biggest problem is picking up sacked former head coach mates as assistants. They were sacked for a reason so to my mind we would do better getting some burgeoning enthusiastic innovating assistants to evolve our game instead of stagnating
