2024 Richmond Coach

Not sure I would want an existing head coach or one that has been unable to cut it at another club so would prefer if we went for an up and coming coach to take us forward. There has to be one about with innovated ideas to make us great again. I would be prepared to take a couple of years of pain in the Dimma mould to get success again

Unless its to get experiencing in interviewing for a senior coaching role, Grigg is nowhere near ready. Needs another 5+ years being an assistant preferably coaching his own team at some stage.

Dimma was only a assistant for 4 years .
I just wonder how some of the player's would react to Grigg.
He wouldn't be my first preference,but certainly wouldn't be my last

The effect of our injuries is being seriously downplayed both here and in the media.

I don't believe thats right Ian.
Of course the injuries have been the issue not just for Lynchy but also for the impact his absence has had on Jacks game and our forward play generally.. But thats what happened and now Dimma has gone in no small part because of our failure to kick winning scores, and Jacks fitness to compete has gone as well, leaving a new coach to look for another solution.
I don't believe he will stand off and let our forward structure continue as it has, but we may get some answers at selection this week

Highly respected former Richmond captain. 268 AFL games. Credited (with others) of instilling the culture change at the club..

It would be interesting to see if
1. Has coached his “own” team for a few years
2. Has coached backs, now coaching forwards
3. His work at Hawthorn recognised with an upgrade
4. His interest after doing coaching apprenticeship under Clarkson.
5. Whether he is held in high regard by the Coaching Selection Board and referees

It also depends on who ever else throw their hat in the ring of course. It will be interesting to see the next senior club coach appointment.

One question, for how long are the current assistants contracted for? Are their terms the same as was Dimma’s ie to the end of 2024.
Can they be replaced, and/or contracts terminated if the incoming coach wants his own assistants?
What is the financial cost involved if this was to occur?

I read most assistant coaches get a 3 month payout if sacked before the contract expires.

A lot of clubs have moved to rolling contracts where you can be dismissed at any stage with three months notice and no pay out. No actual deal in terms of years, you are just employed until you aren't. Not sure if we have gone down this road but I'd be surprised if we haven't because even senior coaches are going that way.

You have to inform your assistants of what is happening with them a month out from the end of the season

We absolutely need a fresh approach from a young coach who has previously coached their own team and had success.

I have no idea who that is but should be the starting criteria.

Both Collingwood and Port are using the central corridor and achieving great results.
Don’t have to be young and inexperienced as both Fly and Hinkley have been around for years. Have to be innovative and have the cattle to execute that style you want to play.
Agree we’ve been stuck with an outdated game plan. But it suits our list until a major overhaul is done at years end.

So we just lost by 10 points to one of the premiership favourites who are playing full of confidence, whilst ours is shattered, cos we were out coached but we need to gut our list and start again?

That was at home against an interstate team.

And the scoreline flattered us.

Don't think we need to gut the list, but we do need to give the team a new msg, tweak the gameplan and give the list a regeneration.

Fresh ideas about where the game is heading or could be, combined with a record of successfully coaching a team of there own.

A few years as an assistant is not enough for me, regardless of how heralded they were as a player.

Agreed. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Dimma’s coaching improved once Balmey came in and provided him with quality people to help him.

That’s not a knock on Dimma just a fact that one man alone can’t get the job done. It takes a group of quality people working in unison and a bit of luck to win a premiership

And apart from the second half of the first quarter and every now and then we kept Port out of the central corridor. We couldn't convert in the 2nd q, but the coaching team got the defensive structure right, imho, against Port. Was interesting to watch the tweaks during the game.

Also Port coached and played to negate our gameplan. By definition they outdid us, but not by much.
