Yeah he is interesting one. Completely out of sight at the moment as one to be mentioned.

He knows the Richmond culture. He was the one who started it.
He has played under Hardwick.
He has been a coach with Clarko.
Was named VFL coach of the year in 2017.
He has coached his own team to a premiership in 2018.
He has been a development coach.
Has coached backline and now forwards at Hawthorn.

Its an impressive apprenticeship.

Is Matt Clarke on the selection panel? if so i would scrap them, and start looking at coaches in the Ovens & Murray league, and the SANFL 3rds.

I think you are looking at a game result rather than a premiership list there. Yes you could replace an ageing Riewoldt and Cotchin with Cumberland and Sonsie but are Cumberland and Sonsie capable of being 300 game pillars of multiple premierships? Highly unlikely I'd say.

To be a premiership team we need a blue chip midfield and at least one elite quality forward and two elite quality defenders as an absolute minimum.

So where are we at with that? Ryan maybe, Gibcus probably, Balta who knows? I can't see any semblance of a blue chip midfield on our list right now, so we either have the young talent on our list that is going to come through or we have a lot of work to do.

Don't count Taranto and Hopper, by the time we have the likes of Gibcus and Ryan and whoever else is going to form a premiership team getting to the 100 plus game window that premiership teams need (average 127 games), then they are going to be late 20s. If they are playing in our next flag it will be as flankers and part time midfielders, they won't be the core. The time for them to do that is now.

As for burning it down it all comes back to where we think we are at. If we think we have the list to contend again now and this season was an aberration caused by injury etc, then we tweak it, top up, bring in a free agent and try to challenge again.

If we accept this run is over and our next tilt is going to take 3 or 4 years to build for then we need to look at our list and assess where it is at in terms of players who will enter that 25-27 year old peak in that time frame.

If it is the latter option (which I believe) then we are in poor shape and need to cut and draft heavily for the next few seasons, if it is the former then we are trying to emulate something only one club has ever achieved while a whole heap have failed. As Sir Humphrey Appleby would say, a very courageous decision indeed.

Pity you werent the Cats list manager at the end of 2021, would have saved us all a lot of heartache.

The Pies will be hoping to play the GF with 9 30+ this year, and 1 who turns 30 about 3 days later, the Dees best player is turning 32 this year, so is another one of the best 5, the Lions will have at least 5 30+s come GF day.

Im not sure why it is unreasonable to expect the 3 I mentioned to still be playing good football in 5 years.

I still reckon we have a good spread of talent across ages and across positions. obviously tall forwards is an issue, but Lynch was the best in the league last year, and started this year in the same form. if he can maintain that form (and he is only 6 months older than the supposed best player in the league (Cameron)) then we just need someone who can go ok next to him.

time will tell.

Our oldies (except for Broad) (and Dusty at times) arent really giving us a heap, but they are inflating our experience stats.
(be interesting to see those averages with Gibcus and Sonsie in for Jack and Cotch, and for them Boak and Dixon in for say Lord and Evans. I doubt the results change much but suddenly we look a lot younger, and vice versa.)

Port have rebuilt on the go over the last 4 years or so.
Back in contention.
Hinkley and Cripps have done a good job at renewing the list.

I think our pick is out of either one of these two.
I like Yze as he has been an assistant at Hawks during their premiership success and was credited with making them an elite kicking team. Premiership success as Melbourne as an assistant.
Premiership success as an assistant is not a necessary, but looking at past premiership teams it certainly helps.

Like to Grigg in as a assistant. Premiership player and develop coach at the cats for their premiership win. Think he would have great insight

Just take Yze as an assistant, should have plenty of soft cap space with Dimma gone and Meehan on the books...

Agree on Carr.Ticks all the Dimma boxes.
Yze though.Bit worried why he missed out on a few jobs.
 
looking at selections, i reckon it is obvious who our 2024 coach is:
Steve Morris.

I think we need to get ahead of the times and select a female coach..................any suggestions?
