2024 Draft Thread

Gotta say..... this is akin to hanging around all day waiting for the 2020 grand final to kick off!
Anxiety and excitement all rolled into one!
We need to start off how we finished that one🤞

You could add Hynes to that list albeit at a later pick and we can just bash midfields, the game is about speed at the moment but how long before big inside mids are back in vogue. Could we be the trend setters once again.
Goal kicking midfielders is what I want us to select.

I've been saying the same for weeks, but was shouted down by the "11 will be better than a future top 5" brigade.

I'd prefer to trade up and back in this draft. I think the top 7 or 8 will be better than the rest, and I also like the look of quite a few i the 35-50 range which I'd happily take.

For example, is Matt Whitlock that much better than say Mraz or O'Farrell as a kpd? Or are Nicholls, Sims, Gerreyn etc that much worse than Jack Whitlock, Faull erc?
It's so hard to split the tall timber, each player has a standout quality but is short in other areas, it will come down to development from here. The 11-20 range has mids with kicking issues, talls without the power forward stamp, injured A graders like Hotton or medium forwards like Berry. I rate Berry the top of his class but not by so much that you would give up a Smith or Langford in addition to a Dattoli or Alger.

That commentary goes close to doing Dusty's goal justice, poor old Bruce on channel 7, his call of the goal was very very underwhelming.

I'll be disappointed if we don't end up with pick 2 - we are in the best position to make a deal and I think securing Jagga / Langford with Lalor would be much better then say a combo of Lalor Smille and Allen.
Is it just me or will any draft from now on feel like a disappointment. Reading the thread the 3 I would like to draft the most is FOS, Jagga and Langford. We may miss out on all 3. Yet we are still going to pick up some awesome players. The thing that will be make tonight even more interested is the live trades. It will be interesting to see whether we move up the draft or move back in draft. With the Phantom Draft might be a thing of the past with the bids and also all of the live trading of picks making predictions impossible. It will be a fascinating night.

With Hynes, I'm not sure where he sits. His he a goalkicking mid, or is he a medium forward. I'm thinking possible the latter but I could be wrong.

Start latter, move into the former.

Reckon he is odds on to be taken by Us if there at 18.

Be line ball if he gets there.

I was thinking about the fitness of these juniors. Compare Lalor to Jagga.
One was doing year 12, didn’t really do a pre season because of cricket and never really got fit.
The other one did year 12 last year and was just playing footy.
Does it make a big difference on how we should judge them?
Jagga was doing Uni wasn't he. That's more time consuming.

Brayshaw's reaction of "*smile* off" was effectively mine. I didn't even cheer at the ground that night. Just stood up, arms in the air and yelled "get *smile*!"

Looking at pick 11 and who we should take given 10 will be who is left from Allan/Lindsay.

Scanning talent on the board, have a strong preference we should take Joe Berry.

Brings some pace, class and skills that we badly need in the front half. We need front half footballers.

Has a high ceiling as well.

Adding him to Lindsay (if gets through) will add some zip, smarts and skill through the middle and forward.

make 3 of first 4 vic country boys.

Having read every scouting report and watched every highlight’s video of possible recruits to Richmond since 2004 I declare myself an expert in the field. Do not let the fact that I have never attended an U/18 game in all that time dissuade you of my bona fides.

I was even there at the footy club on the draft night the year we took JON. I was impressed that he took that long held advice and was good to his mum and mowed the front lawn. There was no footage of it unfortunately. It was there I met The General and asked him why that was his moniker. I’m not over the shame of that incident but I feel I have restored my credibility through hard work.

Here's my take (no draft is done in isolation – so I’ve included the following two to complete the rationale) :
1. Smith
Trade 6 and 20 for 2 + North’s F1. Draft FOS (he’ll be there!)
2. FOS
10. Lindsay
11. Berry
18. Hannaford.
23. Faull
Trade 24 for an Essendon 2025 F1. Gives us 3 First rounders in 2025.
2025
Trade two first rounders for Cadman. Still have one left over.
2026
Trade Mansell and Banks to the new Tassie franchise for a top 10 pick. Yep – they’ll be worth it to them.

The media are lining up for the 2026-2027 headlines.
'How did Richmond not chose...."
'How did it go so wrong at Punt Rd'

Listening to Twomey then he's very confident the top 10 is now pretty much locked.

1. Lalor
2, FoS (North)
3. Jagga
4. Draper
5. Langford
6. Smillie
7. Tauru
8. Travaglia
9. Lindsay/Allan
10. Lindsay/Allan
If i had my preference:

1 Lalor
6 Tauru (or Langford or Smith please Tiger gods)
10 Smillie
11 Lindsay or Berry
18 J Whit, Armstrong, Shanahan or Faull
20 Hynes
23 Oliver or Alger
24 Dodson

You're not the person who promised Troy Taylor a house are you?
