2024 Draft Thread

I’m all about mids that can get the pill, give the pill to another mid who can get it to a forward that can catch it or others that can crumb it. Too old school I know. Mids that are goal kickers are fantastic. But let’s get the guys that are specialist at doing those things first. Then get the cream on top at a later date.

Spoke with a local footy coach this morning who has coached with/against many of the draftees as they came through as kids. FWIW - he says he spoke to a Saints recruiter yesterday and they have cooled on Smillie because his interview was full of excuses for his moderate 2024 form drop-off. This matched his view that he's just a little bit lazy. That said, he also added that he's barely seen a better pure footballer in his time in footy than Smillie if somebody can get the penny to drop re what's required of him.

Looking at pick 11 and who we should take given 10 will be who is left from Allan/Lindsay.

Scanning talent on the board, have a strong preference we should take Joe Berry.

Brings some pace, class and skills that we badly need in the front half. We need front half footballers.

Has a high ceiling as well.

Adding him to Lindsay (if gets through) will add some zip, smarts and skill through the middle and forward.

make 3 of first 4 vic country boys.

Agree on the type Leysy, disagree on the player

Prefer Hannaford, but happy either way

Maybe that's why there is noise about taking Allan at 6 - if we are pretty confident Smillie would slide to 10. Don't think it will happen but makes a bit of sense.

If Smille slids to 10 makes even more sense to trade pick 6 for pick 2 and get Jagga.

Then we end up woth Lalor, Jagga, Smille

That's the sort of reasoning you use to not pick someone when there is plenty of choice, which there seems to be.

I'm sure someone will know, but the kid that was from our NGA, I can't remember his name. Everything has gone quiet on him, my understanding was that if he isn't bid on in either the ND or the RD, that we could automatically put him on our Cat B rookie list. Is that correct? And if so, do we reckon we do it?
not cat b, just standard rookie list that's on the books (if we were interested). Zayden Lockwood

A thought - should we only recruit from Vic Country - would be an awesome draft I reckon.

Potentially Lalor, FOS, Langford, Lindsay, Berry, Travaglia, Faull, Whitlocks x2.

We should just nominate it as the RFC Academy for tonight - no other clubs allowed to bid on these guys.
That’s where all the superstars come from , in fact I’m pretty certain Cotchin was conceived at the family’s holiday house in Echuca , to much of a champion to be purely a city boy

so if Smillie slids (sp) to 10, we go back in time & trade our 6 to North for their 2 & pick Jagga.

Sounds like a plan

If we are confident he will slide to pick 10 which sounds like he might - obviously we won't know at the time
