2024 Draft Thread

So...who does everyone expect we pick?

Me...

Lalor
Smith
Lindsay
Berry
M Whitlock
Dattoli
Faull
Algar

Lets see who gets it closest to the pin.

Lalor
Langford (tipping Norf take Tauru, Carlton take FOS, Adelaide take Draper, Dees take Smith over Langford as better balance for their midfield)
Allan
Lindsay
Berry
J Whitlock
Dattoli
Dobson

So lets say Twomeys hits and guesses is on the money.
And the rumour that we're keen to trade into the stk 8.
Who could it be?
Obvs theyll be gone before our next at 10.
So Lindsay or Tauru.
Both would be welcome picks.
And worth.a trade with the saints

I reckon its Lindsay

Are you concerned by Draper's kicking? I see a player who has a tendency to kick floaters without much depth. Knowing FJ's penchant for good kicks I can understand the reluctance. Smillie is a better kick than Draper, that to me will be the deciding factor.

His kicking isn't a strength. It's certainly passable once you consider everything else be brings.

Guys with his power, strength, cleanliness and burst are gold. They put the opposition on the back foot and open the game up with scoring chains your way. Not many in this draft can and he's the best at it.

He also has a fantastic body of work behind him. Only Jagga rivals him.

SA under 16 and under 18 captain
SA under 18 MVP (in underage year)
Under 18 All Aus (in underage year) and also this year.
Captain South Adel under 18 premiership and was BOG in GF (in underage year).

He then had no pre-season (knee and hip flexor) that ate into the early rounds this season. Yet doesn't seem to get the alibies that Lalor and FoS get with similar (or less) setbacks. For a guy who's elite trait is power, agility and pace that shouldn't be under estimated - Dont forget he tested number 1 for agility in the country last year.

Finally, once he started to get fit his performances for South Adelaide are underrated. That is a strong comp (better than VFL) and he was almost a lone hand in a poor team. He averaged tick over 22 possessions, 4.7 clearances and 6.2 tackles. On that he's a ripper tackler and again one of the few this draft with the pace and strength to track back from a clearances and apply pressure.

Comparing him above to Smillie, he schools Big Willie for workrate. His repeat efforts when fully fit are outstanding. Rather take that and have slightly less kicking, which are largely down to the pace he is often going when kicking it anyway.

Seems the club doesn't agree but it would be a no brainer for leysy to take him ahead of Smillie if he gets through - which is an outside chance if Crows go Langford ahead of him. Said all year he deserves to be alongside the other very top end mids.

He'll also play and impact earlier than probably everyone else in this draft.

I was thinking about the fitness of these juniors. Compare Lalor to Jagga.
One was doing year 12, didn’t really do a pre season because of cricket and never really got fit.
The other one did year 12 last year and was just playing footy.
Does it make a big difference on how we should judge them?

Adelaide recruiter saying Tauru should definitely be spoken about in the conversation with the top 5 and that Smillie and Kako were up with that group too.

Moreso injuries received that impede continuity ILO.

Adelaide recriter touched on this regarding Jagga and Langford having uninterrupted seasons and FOS etc struggling to match their output as a result. Definitely taken into account.

I predict we’ll only take 6 tonight as one pick will be used to trade up or into next year. So we’ll take:

Lalor
Smillie
Allan
Faull
Datolli
Oliver

Tomorrow we’ll have two picks (not necessarily including the first one) and will take:

Sims
O’Farrell

Quite keen to get Lindsay & Berry, but I don’t think they’re there at the point we want to take them.

As we have 8 picks in the first 24 selections is every other draft from now on going to feel like a disappointment or a let down? We are spoilt for choice. The players I would love to draft are FOS, Smith and Langford and we may miss out on all of these 3. Only time will tell. Can't wait for 7.00pm and I am intrigued at what the club will do with live trading this evening. Who knows what surprises the club has planned.

Got a bit of presence about him the Hotel Langford. Won't be surprised if he becomes the best player out of the front end of this draft.

I get your point, but I'd also take a Shedda, who wasn't very quick on his feet (in a straight line) but who's hands could release a player outside and get us into space.
I'd equally take that type of creativeness.
Can never forget Shedda's magic. That little tap kick to(Can't remember now in that game i also can't remember)was as underappreciated by the media as much as Dustys final goal in the 20GF.
