2024 Draft Thread

First joined pre back in 2004 leading up to the Deledio, Tambling etc. draft just over 20 years ago now.

5 picks under 20 we had then. So much excitement leading up to that draft with the hand we had.
Desperately needed to nail it.
We struck out so badly apart from Lids.

This feels important too. Perhaps not so much given the recent flags. Back then it was as if life & death depended on it.

Here's hoping this time we nail it..going to take time to find out despite all the analysis.

With talk that we have strong interest in Bo Allan is the knock on him his disposal ? Just had a bit of look at him , looks an aggressive bull type that will stem the flow when things aren’t going your way in the middle , appears to be strong and have the ability to sit on a player , just appeared to have average disposal by both hand and foot and not sure he has a right foot at all , certainly wouldn’t be unhappy to have him at Punt rd
You gotta remember he only started playing in the midfield this year. He has massive amounts of further development left in him.

Cripps' kicking ain't all that great either just quitely. If Allan can trend like him and can run, and separate from stoppages like him all day, I'll take it. He's got that sort of game style about him.

But at AFL level will he play midfield? I am talking long term?

If we punt on Lalor and get FOS at 6 then take Allen we will have successfully avoided drafting a true mid.

You're shooting at rainbows Gloop.

You seriously reckon 2 of those blokes who have been playing midfield roles this year and have low 6 minute 2klm times aren't gonna be anything but midfielders ? Cmon on now Gloop. Not your best old boy.

Went spotlighting mushrooms with @spook and @Dyer'ere tonight and we settled on some agreed facts.

We agreed we're right and everyone else isnt.

We put the agreed facts in a box and buried them by an old teak up on the hill.

We may have agreed on the wrong bloke?

If carlton dont take him

I would bid on Ashcroft at 1
Take Smith at 2
A true mid who offers something different to Taranto and Hopper
Shown that he is coach able by making changes to his game based on feedback from Morris
We will still get a potentially damaging mid forward at 7
Would also look very closely at Ried at 11 or 12. Looks evasive, quick to size up the situation and have good disposal. More than counteracts a slower 20 metre time

If you can trade 1 of our later picks back a spot or 2 for a future 2nd, you'd say no? There will be heaps of opportunities to trade up again next tear, lots of 1st rounders will be for sales from the linked players. They have great value for next year. What I suggested doesn't take anything away from trading 1 of our other picks to a future 1st, its an additional strategy and it makes perfect sense.
Firstly depends on how far back we've got to trade 1 of our later picks and secondly n much more importantly. What's the worth of a 2nd round pick in next years draft? With all those academy picks supposedly available to only a few clubs next year, 2nd round might be nearing 30's. How deep will next year be? AFL have already restructured the value of draft picks and cut the discount for F/S and academy picks so accumulating 2nd and 3rd round picks won't be worth much next year. Happy to think about trading a later first round pick in this years deep draft for an early first rounder next year, but otherwise just use all our early picks this year n get the best future core that we can.
While there's always a certain amount of premium talent available each year, apart from the first couple of picks. It's very rare that there's two fat drafts in a row.

The key to thinking you're right & everyone else isn't is to post as much as you can in this thread. Posting with conviction is important.

FWIW I think I'm right that nobody here has a clue who we're taking at pick one yet let alone beyond that.

Our best way to trade into future 1st round picks is to trade out picks this year but they also happen to be round 1 picks

Scary isn't it? People thinking about trading out of our first round picks in a draft where we've had a full development look at all the kids in what is already considered to be a very even and deep draft. In exchange for a crack at some randoms that haven't yet completed their kiddie growth years that's also supposedly heavily compromised by academy picks. Happy for the club to go with the old run what ya brung theory n make the most of what's in front of us right now.

Not necessarily:

Sprinkling and icing looks a bit too heavy for me.

As a boutique board dedicated to just one club does PRE have enough regular posters for a full scale Chernobyl level meltdown/Big Footyesque server crashing free for all?
*smile* yeah, that's not a problem. We've been loading up n crashing the site for years.

Depends where you see value in the draft.

2 and F1 from North for 6 and 11 for me is value. I don't get this rhetoric that 11 (which will be 13 or maybe 14) will be better than a top 8 pick next year. Add to that we get to choose our 2 our of the top 6 than I'm happy with that.
I agree to this point but then I’d be looking to trade 18 and 23 for the saints pick 7 or 8.
