2024 Draft Thread

Why ?

We Still have 6 picks
#1 , #2 , #6 , #18 , #20 , #24 which is perfectly fine and can get train on players to assess which we like or Rookie
We then have 2 x 1st rounders and 2nd rounder next year

I would 100% do that
Because we have got rid of any of our flexibility in one shot. I don’t mind 6 picks in the end if that’s where we end up but one of our great opportunities is to get big value for a later pick on the night.

If the right offer comes (which it will) we should be shuffling one of those into next year ILO.

Reckon we need to attack this rebuild from more than one draft.
Well, you might get your wish because instead of my 11-18, if yesterdays statement by Norf wasn't them softening up their fan base for the inevitable trade of 2 and an F 2025 then I don't know what was. They even point blank said they want to take 3 picks (not 2) to the draft next week.

Norf are dumping 2.

However, if it's to us with an F involved, it's almost certainly gonna cost you your coveted 6.

Interesting read…..

Def an interesting read. Didn't Blair start out with the money ball theory regarding players years ago??? Heaps of other major comps around the world use data endlessly, but most of those sports are far more structured than Aussie rules so it's probably a bit more reliable tool for their games. Every successful coaches game plan is picked apart n copied with improvements and has been for a hundred years. So finding another way to get half a metre ahead of the system again would be useful.
We got 8 very early picks n the start of a rebuild so it would probably be the perfect time to dip a big toe or two into a shiny new aspect of assessing players.

Smillie has bust potential, Draper has below average kicking and could go the same way. Tauru is now 194cm and could feasibly move forward but failing that he will most certainly find a home in defence. I think the best path forward is to ensure we get core players with 1 & 6, no unnecessary risks with oversized mids and ones with kicking question marks.
We need the next Grimes.I presume Tauru can play big or small.
Not sure a big bodied mid is what we need,If we do there always next year #1 pick.

Awesome find and super interesting take on Jagga

“It's a really even group – actually, probably even the top 10 is really even. Jagga Smith, based on the first half of the year, I wouldn't have touched him. That’s an exaggeration. You'd obviously take them at like 15 right, but I didn't think he was a top pick. He was one of the most selfish players I've ever seen. Then he went and played VFL, and he was awesome. And he came back to Coates League after playing VFL, and it was almost like the penny had dropped. He actually had to play team-first. So he's just been exceptional since. He’ll go early. Each player in the top 10 has a fairly obvious flaw. But some of the flaws aren't really that important. Some of the flaws are kind of more just about inherent uncertainty. Sam Lalor is not a good runner, but he's never done a preseason before. There are some others I kind of don't want to go too much into, but they're being touted as high draft picks and we, I, wouldn't have them anywhere near there.”

We’ve got all the time in the world Bully , I understand your theory, I just look at all the years wasted in developing talls , again not saying we shouldn’t draft any , however there are other ways to ad “ proven” talls later
Yep.
Get our midfield in order first and foremost via this year and next years draft.
Once thats done offer Cadman an offer he can't refuse.
Yes it will cost us in draft picks but we already have our midfield settled so its not as a big deal losing a few high end draft picks for Cadman who would be the icing on the cake.

Wonder who the VFL coach was that dropped a penny in his buccanear n told him what he should be doing.

Where's Clueso? If Cal is God, you'll seethe who we appear to be linked with and not.

Eg he links us with Shanahan but not Faull.
I don't have an avatar, but he's mentioned us against:
FOS, Smith, Lalor, Reid, Tauru, Smillie, Armstrong, Allan, Travaglia, Berry, Hotton, J Whitlock, Trainor, Shanahan, Dattolli, M Whitlock, Oliver, Dodson. So only 18/30

We may give one up but Allan around 10/11 would be a great pickup.

Not saying this is you but I've heard it several times on here, but some on here say "we shouldn't trade up, because this is a super draft, we should take as many of our picks", yet its suggested that we trade 10 back and gain an extra pick, and people think its a horrible idea because players like Allan are there.

Its a strange one as there appear to be clear tiers in the draft, the top 6-7, then probably a bunch of about 15 that you could throw a blanket over. Thats the area of the draft that I'm thinking we can extract best value of our picks, ie. slide up and back from that area of the draft.

IMO 10/11 is not really the sweet spot of the draft, I'd prefer to be above that for the best potential mids, or slide back a bit to get the best possible kps.

Be interesting to see know much input FJ has this year.

He's more from the old school of visuals and was always prepared to take a risk with his selections. Bit like Wells in that he'd back his opinion and take guys earlier than expected, then live with the consequences.

Very different from Clarke who generally played it safe.

Hence Frank, despite plenty of misses, was able to draft champions and match winners. Clarke more so your solid foot soldiers.

We know what wins premierships.

Interesting to see if we take that riskier approach (compared to Clarke) and take guys with elite, often flashy attributes, but also some question marks.
Surely we go by Toce's notes over FJ?

Losing one of 10 or 11 plus 18 and gaining pick 2 is a no brainer.

For me the key is not losing pick 6 but also gaining pick 2. But thats easier said than done.
