2024 Draft Thread

We traded 8 and something in the 40’s (I think) for 8 and Polak. Freo then traded 8 to Collingwood for Tarrant, who used it on Reid. Hawthorn had 6 that year and could have picked Jack, but instead went for Thorpe. We got lucky with Jack still being there at 13. In typical Failmantle fashion, Tarrant didn’t work out there and wound up back at Collingwood.
I looked it up, 8 and 42

It was actually worse for Freo because they traded 8 and Medhurst for Tarrant

A lot of Jagga at 1 buzz doing the rounds now.
I've never been 100% in on the Lalor at 1 hoo-ha. Seems to have been driven by a lot of media supposition and conjecture more than any lock tight, broad based consensus assessment, as such.

He might well be, but it won't surprise me one iota if Jagga or FOS is actually who we call out at 1.

Be interesting to see know much input FJ has this year.

He's more from the old school of visuals and was always prepared to take a risk with his selections. Bit like Wells in that he'd back his opinion and take guys earlier than expected, then live with the consequences.

Very different from Clarke who generally played it safe.

Hence Frank, despite plenty of misses, was able to draft champions and match winners. Clarke more so your solid foot soldiers.

We know what wins premierships.

Interesting to see if we take that riskier approach (compared to Clarke) and take guys with elite, often flashy attributes, but also some question marks.

My take is completely the opposite, Jackson always opted for the blue collar, inside driven player who usually had reliable foot skills. His process of elimination cost him some gems in Heppell & Weller but also allowed him to pick up some handy 200 gamers like Vlastuin & Ellis. Conservatism built a dynasty, Clarke never understood this and only delivered one bumper haul which was his first draft, after which time he became flanker crazy, stocking up on the same type of player over & over.

I'll vom if we miss Lalor
I won't because it indicates we've done our due diligence, Lalor is an injury risk with a questionable endurance base. He's just ripped a hammy off the bone and I doubt the RFC wants another Gibcus scenario with a pick we cannot afford to screw up.

Does Twomey bring out his next phantom tomorrow?
We have talked about Twomey's accuracy with his Phantom so I looked up 2022. He got the whole top 10 correct and plenty of others in the teens as well.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/868281/cal-twomeys-2022-phantom-draft

in 2023 not as good but still very good

https://www.afl.com.au/news/1064937/cal-twomeys-2023-phantom-draft-top-30-late-picks-club-whispers

I don't say this to make Twomey out to be some talent guru but one thing you have to give him is that he has great information.

It will be interesting to see how close he gets this year because it is so confused atm but historically his phantom is a great guide.

He's admitted several times the last few weeks that this has been the most difficult draft he's ever worked on and to not expect past levels of accuracy.

Dont want Jagga at 1
Theres more upside with Lalor at pick 1
Lalor hasn’t had a proper preseason he would benefit in a professional environment

Endurance and agility a worry for AFL level. Plus injury concerns.

I'd hate to blow Pick 1 on someone who can't cover the ground or might end up a Nathan Freeman.

Rather pick our future captain at 1.

If Lalor or Langford are there at 6 we take them there.

FOS is also overrated. I hope the Blues take him.

Nah.

FJ loved taking a fly at someone. And didnt matter if it was early.

Whether it be a mega skinny and small flanker like Shai, Shedda and Menadue.

To falling on love for someone with great kicking skills, but without the runs on the board winning own ball or athletically like Lennon and Ellis.

Even his greatest hits had elite attributes but significant drawbacks - Jack could leap on tall buildings and great skills but was mega slow. Rance athletic beast but zero composure. Hence why both didnt go earlier, but FJ took the leap.

Even Daniel was taken early more on athletic ability than what he produced on the field.

Then Matt Dea who he apparently hid behind a tree to spot, cos he'd played so little football.

The 2014 draft sums him up - Took a punt on Ellis and Menadue with our first two picks - Confetti.

Then absolutely nailed the rookie draft taking Short, Lablett, George and Soldo.

Yes he had some more reliable straight forward picks - Vlastuin, Ellis, KMac.

But he loved backing himself in and taking a punt on a selection more than most and definitely more than Clarke who's largely gone consensus picks.

Interesting if we revert from that this year. Lalor at 1 might be an early sign we will. It has FJ's imprints ILO.

Heard a Grimesy interview during the week & he said was 'the only player in the history of the game to ever have three hamstring repairs through surgery, which is a six-month process each time you do it.'
Dylan remarkably overcame it for the Premiership era but still had hamstring problems again late in his career.

The Nathan Freeman case comes to mind. Josh Gibcus yet to return either. Was the knee injury related?

Lalor is definitely a risk after that serious injury.

Is Frank definitely back running the show? I preferred his picks to Clarkes.

I'm glad Clarke is gone. Not sure he hit too many out of the park.

Hey @btoz_01 I wonder if there was a heat map like that for Dusty and Cotch before they were drafted. It’s easy in hindsight but I wonder what the thinking was prior.

The Cotch decision came down to an elite ruck or elite mid and both turned out great players, Cotch winning the reach.

Martin at pick 3, I think the knock was background and the risk of mucking up maybe, but man, smashed that one.
