2024 Draft Thread

At 199cm, WA’s leading key position draft prospect in 2024 - Kayle Gerreyn has incredible physical attributes which have allowed him to dominate WAFL Colts games all year.

After impressing in 4 games as a bottom-ager last season, Gerreyn was selected as a member of WA’s Under 16 squad. He then went on to play 11 Colts games for West Perth in season 2024, as well as breaking through for 2 senior appearances in the Falcons’ League side.

Gerreyn was a member of the WA Under 18 squad that impressed in the National Championships, where he averaged 13 disposals, 9 hitouts and kicked 5 goals in 4 outings. Gerreyn duly earned a National Draft Combine invitation, where he impressed with a sharp agility test time of 8.082 seconds.
Would be a great pick up at 20 or 23.

Not to mention Tauru is a november birthdate and said to be now 195cm so alot more growth
Its his kicking i dont like but his athletic ability and upside is great. Would be a good get at 10/11

But i would be taking Jagga / Smillie before Tauru
Would be quite an unbelievable get at 10 or 11.

I think he will be earlier on our list than either Jagga as good as he is, or Smillie.

Elite is Elite. Lockett and Richo kicked plenty of goals in bad teams. Jack won 2 Coleman's when we were terrible.

Very difficult to find elite KPF's though...
Just thinking back to where Jaaack was drafted, they are out there and often overlooked early.

It might be a bit subjective, but I wonder what the strike rate is for talls in the 1st 10, vs those in the 11-20 range. Particularly tall forwards. I'd hazard a guess that there is little difference, possibly even better in that 11-20 range.

Yeah, it is interesting.

Are these talls missed, or overlooked or just bypassed for those who are perceived as better?

Wow - that would be stunning if that occurred in my humble uneducated perspective.

Only question is whether people think Moras is a better option than Hyne.
Dont like it really.
Does not address our biggest issue...slow/non existent midfield.
Jagga...not fos or lalor..no.
Langford..tick
Tauru...tick
Trevaglia..not Reid ...no
Maraes...not Hannaford or Berry...no
Whitlock..tick
Faull...? tick
Dodson....dont think so....prefer a mobile utility ie Hynes or Gross or Dattoli or Algar
Would question if we need both Faull and Whitlock when we have drafted Tauru..who is a JR replacement prospect.
If we pick Whitlock then Dodson seems overkill with talls.

I noticed in Yze welcome speech to the 1-4 year players .on the richmond website. he said .word to the effect .......... there will be 8 new young faces in the club .....blah blah' is that right?we are going to draft or pick in all the upcoming drafts 8 new players ??
that sounds like a lot............ do we have to space for 8 new players?

I reckon there is maybe a reluctance to take talls early and that means some good ones get left for picks in the teens.

Maybe the fact that most teams selecting from the 10-20 range are settled and looking forward to the longer term, while those with earlier picks are hoping for an injection of midfield spectacular, which will magically bring immediate change to their teams fortunes and save their jobs.

Just on Riewoldt as I recall the story we had a better pick and traded down to 13 to bring in Graham Polak. Francis Jackson or whoever was the recruiting manager was not happy because we loved Jack and were going to pick him earlier, I think at 8.
So we probably felt like we got a bargain with Jack because we got Polak and Jack for pick 8. In hindsight we did of course, even just on Jack.
My facts may not be 100% correct but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong!

I was at the draft night before that draft and that is how it panned out.

There were quite a few talls expected to go around the 8ish to 12ish mark and the club explained how they saw all the picks falling. We fully expected either Reid or Jack to be there at #13. Just depended on who Collingwood took and lucky for us they chose Reid

You forgot Grigga…
There was also a 200 game player from St Kilda by the name of Jason Blake, 189cm and played several seasons as first ruck. Mummy was also under the 200cm mark but you would never know watching the game from the stands, he was the all-original punisher who made a career of out of battering beanpoles into submission.

It was even more precarious as the Bulldogs were desperate for a tall forward having spent oodles on a rugby convert and the stick insect in prior drafts. The biggest ounce of a luck was their preference for Everitt, I remember thinking we're never going to get this over the line, especially after Jackson exploded in the carpark after receiving the news about the Polak trade.
