I doubt Smillie would be matched against Lachie Neale or Zac Butters, he will be playing alongside taller opponents, 196cm as a midfielder is rare air. All I'm doing asking a few question related to his role at AFL level.

He will match up against them though. If he plays midfield then it's never 1v1, it's always a large numbers game so he'll always be surrounded by players of all shapes and sizes, and often 30+ different types of players within kicking distance. If we play Freo in a Grand Final in 5 years, he'll need to beat Bolton in the middle. If we play WCE, he'll need to beat Liam Baker. That would be his role, wouldn't it? Unless he plays half back, but if his overhead marking is Dusty-like then he probably needs to play as a smart, running player I'm guessing

I'm just going by the broader idea of his archetype though, I haven't seen him play

Here's a list of the successful 190cm players over the past 10 years

Contested Specialists - Cripps, Fyfe, Josh Kennedy, Tom Green
Elite Kicks - Mundy, Yeo
Elite Agility - Pendlebury, Macrae
Elite Goal Kicking Mids - Marcus Bontempelli

Where does Smillie fit? Does he slide alongside Mundy & Yeo? Is his kicking in that class?

Or can you develop his inside game to the level of the contested specialists?

Smillie's stats very closely aligned to Will Brodie, low 20s production, Brodie never lifted those numbers to elite levels and bar one season has found himself on the outer. Smillie also has limited overhead ability, that's another issue to consider.

If there's a chance Smillie could be pushed back into defence then maybe he becomes a unique prospect like Daniel Talia, a longshot but it is possible.
Huh? Daniel Talia? Unique? Was drafted as a defender played as a defender. 2008 AA CHB. Absoultley nothing like Smilliie. I wouldn't be drafting a midfielder with the thinking he could become a key back.

Your list doesn't include Jack Crisp, Max Holmes, Josh Dunkley (who is a very similar physical specimen to Smillie and my most similar player but Josh a better kick) Jordan Dawson, Mattes Phillipou, Tarryn Thomas, Will Day, Patrick Lipnski, Noah Anderson, Blake Acres and that's just players on lists this year that I consider above average. Leaving out others like Will Setterfield. There are a lot of 190+ mids, it's not unique nor is it unicorn stuff anymore.

I'm surprised Bully, you've championed guys like Joel Goater (190 cm) as back flankers who could transition into mids but know we have an elite kicking midfielder at a good size and you are rallying against them and suggesting defender roles??

Smillie has question marks around running but ball winning, touch below knees and ground ball cleanliness plus elite kicking and decision making represent a midfielder that a lot of teams would froth for. Not calling him a cert to be a AFL great but he is a good chance to become a 150 games foot soldier.

Let's say we do end up just rolling with 1 and 6 and Norf flipped 2 to someone other than us.

Who's the better combo: Donut Guts and Smillie or FOS and Smillie ?

Top of head also - Tom Green, Hayden Young, Nat Fyfe, Noah Anderson, Josh Dunkley etc etc.

His height won't matter. His ability below his knees will and he's fine in that area.

Other things hold bigger obstacles.
And this is where I'm getting mixed messages, when I used the Daniel Jackson example I was referring to his upside as a strong inside presence without the elite groundball ability you typically get with the shorter players. Now you're bringing up players like Dunkley who is an elite clearance player.

If you feel that's his ceiling then that's fair and reasonable, but others are suggesting he's more of a link man in the Mundy class. The narrative here keeps changing which is why I'm not sold. Even his endurance is being questioned which from his time trial seems harsh, but nevermind, I'll leave it to the experts.

If this happens, it would tell me FOS isn't a leader. I hope everyone will support whoever we pick, the recruiters have a lot more information than we do.

Talia was mentioned a few pages back as starting as a midfielder, just following the banter, but to answer your question regarding Goater, he projected as a dual position player, I like those types because they have multiple avenues to an AFL career.

And the guys you have mentioned don't really read like Smillie, Dawson can play defence, he's arguably better in that position. Can Smillie cover a back flank or is it midfield or bust?

I also think a player like Phillipou is a bit more rounded and a bigger threat overhead - not quite apples for apples. Anderson & Day maybe better yardsticks, that would seem like a reasonable ceiling, jumping from 20 disposals to 30 maybe not such a cakewalk if the rumours about a sub standard tank are to be believed.

And that's the other point, going on the combine times he's not a bad runner, the comments on PRE would have you believe he'll be huffing and puffing like Will Brodie. Who's got the good oil on his running ability? i feel like I'm being fed conflicting messages by all and sundry.
