I wouldn't read anything into it.Doesn't look like a pick swap on the cards

How do you know when you're not taking the player who's best available and how'd you know they're reaching?Just had a look at top 10 talls drafted between 2010 and 2020 . Excluding father sons , only went to 2020 as in fairness talls generally take a while .
2010 3 Day, 10 Gorridge
2011 1 Patton, 8 Longer
2012, Jaksch was first at 11
2013 1 Boyd
2014 1 McCartin, 6 Marchbank, Wright
2015 1 Weitering, 2 Schache, 6 Francis, 8 Weidemann, 10 McKay
2016 zilch
2017 9 Naughton
2018 2 Lukocious, 4 King , 6 Ki
2019 3 Jackson, 6 McCasey
2020 1 JUH, Thilthorpe, McDonald, Granger Barass , 8 Cox , 10 Reid
I count 1 superstar , 8 good to very good players out of 26 , that’s a poor strike rate in my eyes and a lot of wasted picks for a variety of reasons
Yes talls are important , however taking a tall for the sake of taking a tall is fraught with more danger then a midfielder, flanker or small , I don’t buy the argument of we have 8 picks atleast 2 have to be talls , yep great if those talls turn out to be very good talls , we need to ad quality at every pick , which most likely playing the averages we won’t a couple won’t make it , which makes it all the more important to pick best available, this is the method the best clubs go with , they ad via trade or draft for needs once they are in the window .
Ideal world we would walk away with 4 quality mids who can play forward or back, a key forward, a key back , a ruck and a gun goal kicking small forward , however we just have to go best available at each pick and hope they all turn out stars .
I rest my case
As I’ve said earlier , like most clubs we have a list rating players from 1 to 1000 , we put a line through players as they are selected and then take our next highest rated player , nothing to do with reaching . Its all part of the list management and recruiting “ best available “ again we don’t have any part of the list covered well , more then ever we simply need quality , if that happens to be talls so be it , very happy to back Blair and his 3 time Premiership theory in here or Stephen Wells and his amazing run of having his team play finals by choosing best available. How do you know when you're not taking the player who's best available and how'd you know they're reaching?
By your logic, it's OK to take the tall if they're the next best player.
So how did we pick Reiwoldt? Best available or reach?
I'm sure you were the person who told me we were choosing between Selwood and Rance and went Rance. In that situation we must have had them roughly even, and went the need option.
The risk with talls is they've usually not developed/grown into their body as well as the mids have, so there's bigger risk.
But the risk of not drafting them, is when you make a play for Ben King and Himmelberg and end up with Koschitzke and Bauer.
I rest my case
I feel like he’s going to turn into a good afl player as well. I think we’re keen but it does have the feel saints will get himSmiling Josh I have a feel will be right in the frame at 6 , having a look at how comfortable he plays forward to go along with his ability to find teammates in better position with his great vision and hands , certainly dosent mind wearing one to create space , and also balances up well to deliver low penetrating kicks . I understand people’s queries on him , however I think I may have undersold him , as long as he’s committed and continues to learn to use that huge frame I think he’ll be a beauty .
Gut feel Saints get him
Joe the Goose n HaplessAgain I love a big gun key forward , however how many Premiership teams in recent years have had Superstar key forwards ? No doubt they still have their importance in team structures , however the game is no longer about the key forward , star midfielders are a must
By that logic Lalor is a mid first rounder & Lindsay is a late first rounder. But if you want to know the truth, I'm bullish on Tauru because he's still growing and his set shot kicking is much better than advertised. I also think his floor is still AFL quality defender, I can't see anyway he doesn't make it to be honest. There's a sniff of Naaughton about him and his phenomenal leap will surely get put to good use.
My contrarian thoughts about Smillie & Draper have already been posted but in summary, I think Smillie could go the way of many key position sized mids, that particular group is textbook boom/bust, the reasons range from the manchild effect, a lack of groundball game, decreased agility and a lack of contested marking ability. Draper isn't a good kick in my view so I wouldn't be risking an excellent key position prospect for a player who can't deliver with precision.
Not to mention Tauru is a november birthdate and said to be now 195cm so alot more growthI struggle to see how any professional recruiter could rate Armstrong ahead of Tauru, way more bust potential with Armstrong, he's in that category of boom/bust because you would struggle to play him anywhere else apart from the forward line. The winners from this draft will be those who manage the risk with players who are very likely to become core players. Even if Tauru doesn't make the transition to key forward he will still make a fine key defender.
His set shot kicking looks way better than Naughton and that's always been considered a successful transition. Not to mention Tauru is a november birthdate and said to be now 195cm so alot more growth
Its his kicking i dont like but his athletic ability and upside is great. Would be a good get at 10/11
But i would be taking Jagga / Smillie before Tauru
Sheesh, which one's Colina, no idea what he looks like?Great to see both Fawcett and Colina on the track for first session of preseason
I’ll give you a clue.Sheesh, which one's Colina, no idea what he looks like?
From the look of those selections it's obvious most of those big blokes were taken far to early in the draft n hence have struggled to match their ratings. Fortunately for us we have a massive 8 selections in this years draft so we can safely fill our boots with quality mid sized players with our first 4 or 5 picks and then have a rummage around in the big bloke basket with our spare end of first round picks. If we hit up on 1 gun n 1 handy KPP with our end of first round talls then we're laughing n if we've messed them up, it was with our later picks and we've still covered our midfield with a bunch of best available.Just had a look at top 10 talls drafted between 2010 and 2020 . Even if that's true what does that mean. Don't pick talls in the draft? Only pick talls late in the draft (and fight even worse odds). We can load up on mids and flankers sure. But with 8 early picks we must select at least two talls.I'm coming round to the view that with very, very few exceptions, pretty much all tall KPF types at draft age, more than any other position on the ground, are highly speculative.
Like the Sirens who lure sailors onto the rocks with their alluring song, so do junior KPFs lure keyboard warriors, media pundits and even unwary list managers with their enticing bags of goals kicked against junior defenders.
"Pick us early!" they warble alluringly from the shoals. "You have the chance to set up your spine for the next decade! Ignore those 195cm big-bodied goal-kicking mids, forsooth"
And so it happens - bewitched and beguiled recruiters dash their hopes on the rocks of statistical reality, and then spend the next few years wondering how other clubs have gone past them while they cling to the hope that the guy who looked so good beating up on skinny kids will choose this year to finally click. And put on weight. And develop some aggression. And do his job well and often enough that it makes up for everything the club could have had with a big-bodied goal kicking mid over the last 3 years of waiting.
Taking non-obvious-superstar KPFs at the draft is a luxury. And for a club whose starting midfield in 2025 could include the likes of Jack Ross or Thompson Dow, it's a a luxury that must be forgone until the absolute essentials are taken care of.
Mids, mids, mids. That's all I want to see.
Important update or meaningless slip of the tongue ?
Today Yze told the early return group that in 2 weeks time 8 new faces will be sitting in the room with them.
8.
c'mon, he's hard to spot.I’ll give you a clue.
He’s tall
Some do and some don’t, players develop differently. They develop AFL bodies at different rates and they develop the maturity and mindset for AFL footy at different rates.Won't need to wait that long.
Kids these days show alot more in there 1st or 2nd year
