2024 Draft Thread

Same re Langford at #6, but somehow I reckon there is a better chance Smith slides to #6 than Langford for some reason.

Love to know what strategy the club has cooked up for this draft.
Only strategy is pick your highest rated at #1 and take who we rated at #6
if a trade has not been worked out with NorF

Not really a lot we can do other than show extra interest in Tauru & Armstrong in the hope they get taken earlier

I was curious how Jagga stacks up against number one picks (and first mid picked pick W.A) from the last few years in the state leagues so did some research. Couldn't find average clearances on the VFL site so not there unless I found an alternative source. Feel free to help if anyone wants, I also included Sid Draper as a comparison to Jason HF. I really like Draper..Really.

Anyway, I really like Jagga too and think he gets a raw deal around here.

2021
Horne-Francis
SANFL - Average - 16 disposals, four marks, four tackles, three clearances and a tick under a goal per game in 20 matches.

Comparison

Sid Draper SANFL 2024
Average - 22 disposals, 2.2 marks, 6.2 Tackles, Clearances 4.7, Goals .3, games 6

2022

Will Ashcroft
Average -27 disposals, 3.3marks, 5.3 Tackles, Clearances- can’t find, games 3

2023
Harley Reid
Average - 19 disposals, 6 marks, 5.3 Tackles, Clearances- 2 in his first game, Goals .1, games 3

2024
Jagga Smith
Average - 25.5 disposals, .3 marks, 2 Tackles, Clearances- 6.3, Goals 0, score involvements - 4.7, games 2 (1 in *smile* weather)

Not from me Fastin, he is my preference by a country mile.

But I like and respect the debate on here.

I'm actually surprised few see upside in the case of Jagga, it's remarkable that a player with the physique of a whippet is producing such incredible clearance numbers against much larger bodies. He can only become more damaging once he fills out in the upper body, 50 possessions in a match also screams upside.

Dees are meant to be red hot for Langford.
As they should be Ripple…he is going to make a lot of posters on here look silly once he gets going.

You would think he is snail pace by some comments…but it’s not all about pure speed. He has a massive tank and will still be running hard whilst all the so called fast midfielders will be cooked by the last qtr.

Will be a gun. Genuine footballer.

100% Bully…but to many get sucked in by what “might” happen rather than what is staring them in the face.

Fos and Lalor seem to have massive “potential” but it is no given at the absolute highest level.

Especially at pick 1

If we really wanted Fos, Blair wouldvd taken the offer from North's pick 2 and F2nd for 6 and 18.
But has stuck with what he said on B&F night. We won't be giving away any picks.

The ground ball gets numbers were pretty astounding too as already mentioned by another poster but they were only for juniors. His agility is astounding. And handball radar reminiscent of one S Edwards.

Clearances unbelievable.
Pair him with either FOS or Lalor and away we go

What about Sid Draper? He would be a decent pick at number one. Do we not speak about him because he’s south Australian? Great break away pace at clearances.

And…4.7 clearances average- 2nd only to jagga in the stats I could find

Personally haven't forgotten them, but Lefau will be out you'd imagine most of next year with rehab and building his body back up. He'll likely be 27 (June) before he can play AFL again. Not really a long term option.
Gray is 22 already, but without an AFL preseason in his body yet. As a rookie, he'd be a long shot to make it to 50 games (based on stats and previous KPF rookies). Whilst he looks like an inspired selection and a great risk v reward option, we can't put all our chips on him.
Bauer looks more 3rd tall. He'd really benefit with not having the 1st or 2nd best defender on him.
If we're planning for 200 game players, the odds will be against all of them getting there, although they may be handy for a couple of years.
I think we've moved past Balta up forward. If not, our problems become Young, Miller are our key backs, with Gibcus a talented but risky proposition.
We gotta draft some keys at either end I think.

I don’t think I could be accused of not being a supporter of both Miller and Young, with many discussions with Posh and others on both players, somewhere in the past. But these two have challenges ahead and Young particularly, with his lack of pace, looks to be in a fair bit of trouble.

But imo Blight should also be part of the discussion.

Next season after a full pre season he will push ahead and if successful I think we might see him providing consistent marking and leadership. At WAFL level he has been dominant and Rance like in his efficiency. Very skilled, consistently in the right position to spoil or mark and safe hands, but with pace possibly an issue.

Again imo enough there to believe he can succeed.

And I wouldn’t write off either Lefau or Gray. Both are talented and kick with accuracy. Speed and aggression also.

Great pickups all.

Maybe that's the reason we are not clamouring after pick 2, we want (presumably) Lalor at 1 and reckon Jagga will make it to 6.

DS
I don’t mind Jagga at 6 but if North pass on Tauru I think they might take Jagga at 2, who would compliment their midfield nicely.

If both Tauru and Jagga are there at 6…
Great but for us, not an easy choice.

Has to be a slight slide to six chance dosent he fb ?

No idea who we take or who we should take however , one of FOS 1% , Draper 10% Langford 15% Smith 20% Lindsay 50% Smillie 80% will be available

Read an article about him and the crows and whether they pick him.

If they pick him and he is a bust they probably get away with it because it is conventional wisdom to pick a local boy. If they don’t pick him and he is a bust they are geniuses. If they don’t pick him and he is a star they get sacked !!

I think they'll cost us a fortune in picks (probably 3x 1st rd), because neither of them will be unrestricted you'd imagine. Need to ensure we have young fellas coming in as KPF. Can always trade one later if we have too many.
Wait till Cadman is OOC.Only cost 2.

I’ve got no idea where he ends up going Mr B. I think he has some very damaging traits that he’s demonstrated at every level so far. Tackle numbers are very good which says a lot too.

Don’t forget Fawcett.
Showed enough to suggest he’s got untapped ability.
Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he cracks a seniors birth at some stage next year, dependent on getting a solid preseason under his belt.
Looks a natural forward to me

He's out of contract after 2026, his 4th year. He's a free agent after the 2030 season (8yrs).

Do you plan on going without a key forward for that long? I'd rather draft and build our own Cadman types than rely on rookies or Kosi types.
