2024 Draft Thread

20% ACL recurrence rate for athletes.

I’m firmly in the risk minimization camp when it comes to drafting and subsequently wouldn’t touch any player that has done an ACL.
Some players who have done acls and been fine
Max Gawn - actually did 2 early
Christian Petracca
Robbie Gray
Daniel Rich
James Sicily
Will Ashcroft won the norm Smith after doing his in 2023

There are plenty who have been fine. I’m not saying there isn’t a risk but many players recover perfectly well

But you forget all the ones who didnt recover because they're never seen or heard of again. For every Gawn I raise you a Ryan Fitzgerald or Alex Johnson or Daniel Menzel and on and on. And that's without considering the ones who played on, but were never quite the same either eg Modra, Tony Hall etc etc. Coughlan ? Tony Free ?

Beyond re injury potential, nobody - not even Hotton himself - knows if he'll even be 100% himself yet. It's an unknown.

Why take the risk ? Doesn't make any strategic sense particularly with another high grade injury potentially with pick 1, and when there are players as good or better than Hotton that don't come with that baggage.

I said that I am not saying there isn’t a risk but my view is that just saying no because someone has done an ACL is too definitive for me.
We have orthopaedic experts who can judge these things and it is a judgement in the end.
Not specifically talking about anyone but if a club can get a top 5 talent at pick 20 who has done an ACL many would definitely consider it. I don’t know Hotton well enough to know if he falls into that category.
Personally I would take a player who has done an ACL before one with a concussion history.

We're not talking about concussion. We're talking about ACL's and taking completely unnecessary risk.

People are REAL quick to forget those that don't come back from ACL's or aren't themselves again.

And Hotton isnt a top 5 player either.

Stocks rising Leysy, if say Langford & Smith were unavailable at 6 I'd be very tempted. But if we trade for pick 2 and take Tauru we'll shatter Thursty's trust and we'll probably never be cutting a favourable deal whilst he's at the helm. The looks on the Kangas faces would be gold however, it would be worth the entrance fee to see a room full of exploding tomatoes.

Good to see you're cottoning on to The Viking.

Yeah Taj is an interesting one but tend to agree.

Unlike say a Lalor or FoS who had different complications this year, he doesn't have any bottom age work to speak of. Didnt really impact last year.

Understand why his athletic talents and early exploits are enticing. But we're really basing him off a 4 game batch this year and pretty underwhelming prior. Not a big sample size.

Also reckon needs a fair bit of work on his inside game to make it as a midfielder.

If our picks stay as is, and considering the other talents around, plus his knee, no way could Leysy draft him at 10 or 11.

In the 20's yeah maybe. Even then just a maybe.

So much upside in Hotton, I know he's coming off an ACL but I'd be happy to grab him.

The slider who Matthew Lloyd believes could be the best player in the draft

Matthew Lloyd believes one draft slider could land up being the best player out of this year’s crop.
Sandringham Dragons’ mid-forward Taj Hotton tore his ACL earlier in the year, which is expected to see him slide down the order.

But Lloyd says Hotton, who he coaches at Haileybury, could be the best player out of this year’s draft.

“One to watch is Taj Hotton,” Lloyd said on Wide World of Sports.
“He is from Haileybury and did his ACL mid-season, but I think he’s a top five draft pick.
“Whoever selects him could may well get the best player in the draft.”

3AW AUDIO

I'm not convinced this draft is as deep as these so called experts are saying.
Hottons highlights aren't any thing special

With 8 picks within the first 24, we'd have to upgrade or future a couple of our picks to even think about not taking all our selections. Would be crazy not to fully attack the main draft but then upgrade rookies or even take rookie / psd selections.
We will push 1 possibly 2 picks into futures

I never said Hotton was a top 5 player.

My point was that people are being very black and white about this and there is a lot known about ACLs these days and many players do recover very well.

You don’t agree, I get it
