2024 Draft Thread

It would be interesting to know the % of footballers that have multiple ACLs after they do it once.
Yes, there are quite a few who have done it twice or more, but there are also plenty who just do it once and then have successful careers.

Is it more likely that someone who has done it once will do it again? or it is more likely that someone who never has, will do one?
As TF has said 20% , that certainly makes a question mark , in saying that I’d imagine there is a lot of different ACL injuries and recoveries , family history , impact injuries, the simple direction turn , infection and other issues post surgery , weak/strong hammies . Tough call for recruiters , sometimes the talent may be worth the risk , sometimes the injury won’t be worth the risk .

Trainor becomes an incredibly Intresting decision clubs are going to have to make and hes type of concussion history is going to become an even bigger question mark with recruiting as we go forward .

Cotch, Dusty, Shedda, Lids. $hai will get to 200 barring injury.Thankfully ours were all premium n then we drafted or poached some solid surrounding 200 game players to them, like Presty, Grigga, Bash, Flappers etc that manage to eke out around the 200 games.

Not that hard to get Scooper.
That’s 4 in 20 years we’ve drafted. Not many for not that hard. If it’s not that hard why do we so desperately need mids?

For mine, it would be an insane decision to take both Lalor and Hotton together.

We're at the bottom of the ladder with a list that's already riddled with recurrently injured players and we're gonna add not 1 but 2 high risk players ? In a draft that we simply have to get right otherwise we'll be in purgatory for 10 plus years ?

Cmon. The difference between Hotton and those around him is not so great as to warrant taking such a massive (and unnecessary) risk.
That’s why I wouldn’t take FOS and Lalor if I had first two picks or even at 1 and 6.

If North keep pick #2
Im hoping they reach for Tauru and Melbourne are infatuated with Armstrong at #5
I’m hoping the same but I think Melbourne have changed tack in the last few months. They desperately were looking for a key forward but since the whole Shopping of Clarrie and the mismanagement of Petracca they are now looking at mids.

Maybe because we got them all in a similar time bracket and very early in the drafts. We haven't had that early bracket for ages n all the ones we had are old n worn out so now we're desperate for a new set. The initial remarks were simply about what was hoped for or expected regarding the pick 1 player. A good 200 gamer or something hopefully much better. Every club has a group of good mids that will play somewhere from 170 odd games and upward toward 300, maybe even more. Some clubs have a player or two that are actually elite players who play a similar amount of games, they usually play finals n chase flags.

Does Jagga have a big game at AFL level or will he be more along the lines of steady, neat n tidy accumulator??? He's the player the Mole was referring to when I replied to his very good 200 gamer comment. I think the expectation and hope will be for better than very good at pick 1.

The FOS injuries are of little concern to me, I don’t see him as anymore of a risk than 99 percent of the players.

Trainor is a bigger risk. He’s had two concussions last season.
Yes I agree, I would have him in the same bracket as Hotton. Very different injuries but unfortunately the likelihood of recurrence and long term issues could be just as high.

Would we put the cat amongst the pigeons if we get pick 2 we could take Tauru @2?
The depth of this years draft good enough say that the gap between a FOS and say Allan small enough to warrant a move?
iIf we take into consideration with Sharp being on our radar next year?
Pretty sure we're not going to trade for #2 to get Tauru.

What's the % for ACL recurrence for 2 ACL's ?

Note: Hotton has already had follow up surgery to his original ACL so it's 2 surgeries on his knee already. Not a second ACL surgery, but some revision surgery never the less. That's not good.
I can’t find anything on that. I’d imagine the recurrence rate doesn’t drop the more times you do your ACL though.

Imagine Jagga getting it out on a constant basis to a more damaging disposer in FOS & Sharp.
Thats why i'm keen on Jagga.

Criminally underrated on here is Jagga.

You can GUARANTEE if we dont pick him up (*with any of our picks) we are going to hear a hundred times a week from the media (as he accumulates 30 possessions each week)...HOW did the Tigers pass up on this kid (flogs).

Jagga will be a very good player. The polarisation of opinions here are not right in my view. I don't think he has the impact ceiling of Lalor and FOS, but he's also not going to just be a undamaging mid that plays 200! He will get picked 4 or 5 accordingly.

Just imho BB I certainly don’t underrate him I think he’ll be a star , I just think Lalor and Fos will be better baring unforeseen circumstances to any of the 3 footballers , Smith I’d be very confident will be looked back on in 20 years as one of the best 5 draftees from his draft

Yep. It takes 12 months to fully return to baseline after a single concussion. It takes a month to return to 90%, and 2-3 months to 95%. That's for a single concussion. Multiple concussions multiplies that timeframe, and damage is worse.

In his favour, Trainor's form should be better than it was post-concussion where it dropped off, because concussions negatively affect on-field performance after returning.

When it comes to risky picks, I'd apply the same level of risk for 1 draft pick as I would for 8 draft picks. They're all important.

I think this draft is very closely aligned to the Rayner draft, I think Smith is the Andy Brayshaw in the pack and will probably have a similar development curve. Would you be happy having overlooked Rayner & LDU? I would be fine, I reckon LDU is the more impactful player but misses plenty of football, Rayner just a humble forward flanker. 200 games at Brayshaw level is a win from my perspective.

Lids was a star and gets a bit of a bum rap on here at times because he left.
If he was starting his career now he would be a perfect hybrid mid who could play anywhere. Quick, kicks really well, marks very well.
Some question him as a person but I have no idea about that. I listen to Dylan Buckleys podcast a bit and he is great, actually quite self deprecating, maybe he has matured and grown up?
