2024 Draft Thread

We are savagely forgetting the athlete Deledio was. Close to the best physically build and profile I’ve seen on a midfielder.
Was he a leaper though? i suppose in spurts, he did have some stints up forward.

Adelaide at 4 or Melbourne at 5. Dees like Smith or Langford is my mail from someone at another club.
Thanks, @spook. This is what we're having trouble nailing down.

Interesting that you've got Smith linked to MFC. And Langford to ADEL.

Twomey knows there are two clubs for Smith. He'll be right.

You got any idea who Carl-you-see-how-you-scum want at #3 if FOS is gone?

They probably don't want Smith as he's another Walsh - reckon they'll either want a point of difference to the mids they already have and preferably quicker (Draper) or if not, an eventual successor to Cripps. (Lalor, Smillie, Langford).

Yes, SteeDz. We all think Carl-you-see-how-you-scum must go for overlap between their current established finals squad and a new star.

If Carlton get nothing else right this draft they have to get a player who can add something in 2025 or 2026. Cripps is all that's holding their midfield together as it is. The bookends are league leading. They've got to add mids and small forwards. Quality small.

Any reasonable student will match Carlfilth with an early bloomer. Sid Draper is probably that. Langford is probably that. I think Smith is that. I think Smith is an early bloomer.

But. Of that trio only one can exert defensive pressure inside 50. It's Draper.

We know that Carlton has finally changed its way of rating small forwards. Because they got rid of Owies. Not enough defence. Draper is quick. He can and will chase and his best I50 kicking is good or terrific*.

There's a joke in here somewhere. Is Draper or FOS more likely to impact in 2025? 2026?

*Not to say his 2024 SANFL form is his best.

Smillie copped a media ban after meeting Carlton, could be some smoke coming from that direction.
That's an interesting scenario, Bully. Throws everything out.

Would we then, against our better judgement, take Draper? Or would Taylor beat us?

Take it to the bank, Bully. We'll take FOS if we get pick #2.

And we'll probably get pick #2. Probably.

Can he win enough ball though.
There's some risk but he did have a good year in 2023, small sample size this year however, I think these types of picks can make you look foolish if you land a Fiora or Tambling but I think O'Sullivan is much better on the inside than those two.

Marc McGowan has surprised me with his two most recent ratings.

We all agree that Twomey can link player to club. It's the Twomey thing. He's God.

McGowan writes recruiter mail. Not his opinion. He dispenses with his own opinion. (It's like he's a journalist.) He surveys recruiters and gets their opinions. And writes them up in a semi anonymous way. Some of the pots he writes are hilarious and perhaps accurate.

I love this one from 01 Nov -

19. Ollie Hannaford (GWS Giants)

GWV Rebels/Vic Country
Forward, 180cm, 1/9/2006
Talent League stats (avg): 16.7 disposals, 9.5 contested possessions, 1.2 goals
The Age’s August top 30: N/A October top 30: 20
Agility test: 7.92 secs 20m sprint: 2.95 secs 2km time trial: 7:26 mins

Hannaford’s draft stocks rocketed in the last two months of the year, with his mid-season switch to attack unlocking his potential after he started down back. He is tough as nails, ultra-competitive and boasts a great combination of speed and power – as evidenced at the Victorian combine – that makes him a match-up nightmare. Hannaford’s 2km time was underwhelming, but recruiters largely dismissed it as an issue and were confident he would improve in an AFL system rather than living in a boarding house.

Does Hannaford stop for a durrie when on a 2km trip to the shops? Weak. Any player can smoke while he runs. *smile* this boarding house mansion. This Hannaford toff can sleep with the horses and race them. They smoke more than he does. And faster.

I think we're all tired of this woke ermergerd Hannaford victim narrative. It's nobody else's doing that he smokes the sawdust we provide him when he's supposed to eat it.

Hannaford Hannaford. All others is cagmannaford.

On my own opinion here, I think Hannaford can improve his smoking, his nutrition and his 2km if he can just find accommodation fit for a human. Or even a horse. I've got him about 15.

I haven't lost all hope for Samson yet. He actually played a couple of pretty good games in a row in 2023 when Nanks was injured and he played primary ruck. But we've spent alot of time when Nanks is playing turning him into a key forward. Has only played 23 games. Needs a decent stint in the ruck and it's time Nanks gave ua bit of ruck time for the cause I think.
He did play well in the ruck then, even competed well with Gawn for a half but tired.
He has to mark the ball, that’s the big issue. Those cymbal hands have to be fixed for him to make it as a ruck and I losing hope, and I was a fan.

Definitely needs to hold his ground better imho Sin , big summer at KFC and on the leg press

This is what happens when football isn’t around. We get silly. Good reminder.

We need key forwards and rucks. Ryan has filled neither role. Carry on.

May have told this story here before , however as a 9 year old I’d get home from school about an hour before my parents got home from work . Traditionally mum would start putting a few presents under the tree in early December, anyway with the fine touch of a brain sergeant and the opportunist wit of a car thief I opened up what turned out to be the tri screened Diamond hunt ( cheaper version of Nintendo game and watch) so every day after school I’d play Diamond Hunt right up until I’d hear the old HG Ute coming up the driveway , then quickly put it back in the box and under the tree , so by the time I opened it up on Xmas day I was over it and wanting Donkey Kong 2 , my point being I’m an inpatient bastard and I want to open up my Lalor NOW and see what other prezzies I have . Seriously the longest bloody off season since 2018 , so much excitement and intrigue in the unknown of who we will get , loving it but *smile* I hope we never have to do this again , best thing about the Dynasty was not giving a rats ass about this time of year other then the credit card bill for Premiership paraphernalia.
