2024 Draft Thread

We are savagely forgetting the athlete Deledio was. Close to the best physically build and profile I’ve seen on a midfielder.
Freak , always shocked me in that Gillette ( I think ) series where Billy Slater blew him away .

Wouldn’t have been to many as fast straight line runners as Lids in the AFL , especially at 6/2 , as good a hands as anyone his size as well , I think for memory he had the 3rd biggest size mitts in his draft .

IMHO if he played half back in a good side would have been talked about as a top 10 in the AFL , not that half backs should be talked up so high

He’s got the smarts, drive and leadership traits to be a very solid 200 gamer. I reckon we might kick ourselves if we miss him.
But there's the perennial question mark about Jagga. Do we want a very good 200 gamer with pick 1, or do we want a super star champion at pick 1???
There's lots of very good mids play around the 200 games at every club. There's only ever a handful of standout gun players throughout the competition at any time. Pick 1 is the Willy Wonka gold ticket when it comes to drafting and rebuilding a team, does a very good 200 gamer meet expectation?

Tell me more about our ability to draft multiple mids that play 200 games.

Cotch, Dusty, Shedda, Lids. $hai will get to 200 barring injury.Thankfully ours were all premium n then we drafted or poached some solid surrounding 200 game players to them, like Presty, Grigga, Bash, Flappers etc that manage to eke out around the 200 games.

Not that hard to get Scooper.

The mighty Tauru, 192cm but still could make it as a key defender, could be an even bigger weapon if he grows.
Would we put the cat amongst the pigeons if we get pick 2 we could take Tauru @2?
The depth of this years draft good enough say that the gap between a FOS and say Allan small enough to warrant a move?
iIf we take into consideration with Sharp being on our radar next year?

So much upside in Hotton, I know he's coming off an ACL but I'd be happy to grab him.

The slider who Matthew Lloyd believes could be the best player in the draft

Matthew Lloyd believes one draft slider could land up being the best player out of this year’s crop.
Sandringham Dragons’ mid-forward Taj Hotton tore his ACL earlier in the year, which is expected to see him slide down the order.

But Lloyd says Hotton, who he coaches at Haileybury, could be the best player out of this year’s draft.

“One to watch is Taj Hotton,” Lloyd said on Wide World of Sports.
“He is from Haileybury and did his ACL mid-season, but I think he’s a top five draft pick.
“Whoever selects him could may well get the best player in the draft.”

Certainly a young Shedda about him.
That alone i'd take the gamble

Not sure the strike rate of players going on to have successful careers after early ACL injuries , however it appears to be a much stronger possibility with modern medicine . Sometimes I think you have to take the punt when the talent is superior to the ones around them , every player drafted has an element of risk attached for a variety of reasons .

I like Hotton a lot from what I saw , definitely some of the Freo fellow Bolton traits , however a better field kick but obviously not the agility of Bolton as nobody does

In saying that I know 2 lads very well, both nearly 21 who have both done 3 ACLs , both 2 in one knee and 1 in the other , the smaller of the 2 at about 5’9 was a certain draftee until did his second at 17 , sadly has retired from footy all tighter , the other lad about 6’1 is back playing O & M footy , both saw Dr Feller so had the best of the best treatment

It would be interesting to know the % of footballers that have multiple ACLs after they do it once.
Yes, there are quite a few who have done it twice or more, but there are also plenty who just do it once and then have successful careers.

Is it more likely that someone who has done it once will do it again? or it is more likely that someone who never has, will do one?

For mine, it would be an insane decision to take both Lalor and Hotton together.

We're at the bottom of the ladder with a list that's already riddled with recurrently injured players and we're gonna add not 1 but 2 high risk players ? In a draft that we simply have to get right otherwise we'll be in purgatory for 10 plus years ?

Cmon. The difference between Hotton and those around him is not so great as to warrant taking such a massive (and unnecessary) risk.

20% ACL recurrence rate for athletes.

I’m firmly in the risk minimization camp when it comes to drafting and subsequently wouldn’t touch any player that has done an ACL.

What's the % for ACL recurrence for 2 ACL's ?

Note: Hotton has already had follow up surgery to his original ACL so it's 2 surgeries on his knee already. Not a second ACL surgery, but some revision surgery never the less. That's not good.

Would be very happy for Lalor to be as good a footballer as Lids was , going to start out with about the same amount of talent around him

You take the risk if you are challenging
Not in our position, we simply can't afford the risk, we've had 5 players with acl injuries
Not keen to add another, it's a hard pass for me.

I get your point but my concern is, do we take an almost guaranteed very good 200+ game player or reach for the superstar game breaker who may not rise to the expected heights? It could go either way - Cam Rayner was the new Dusty who’s career has been underwhelming- ave 13 disposals and a goal a game across 140 games, or you could end up with Andy McGrath who is solid but also underwhelming
