2024 Draft Thread

Not sure Blair has as much say on delistings and who we retain as you make out.
I would have thought the head coach and all the other coaches are going to have the major say on player retention. The list manager is involved of course.
A coach has some input about types he may want, but Blair has the final say on list needs,,the coach having a lot of power on the list and recruiting went out year's ago
Im sure they have many meetings throughout the year about player retention, and future prospects ,but the other thing is there is never a guarantee that a coach will be retained ,so you can't lose focus on how your list is balanced .
I remember seeing a interview with Chris Scott, and he said he has very little input into the list ,and leaves all that to people who are employed in those areas ,although
l think Clarko and Dimma probably have too much to to say

Yeah, I wasn’t talking about recruiting so much as delistings.

For instance there was a choice of two of Cumberland, McIntosh, coulthard and Dow. I would be staggered if the coaches didn’t have a massive say in that decision.

2024 AFL MOCK DRAFT LIVE!

WHERE THE BIDS ARE SET TO COME
Reigning premier Brisbane is set to avoid paying top dollar for father-son gun Levi Ashcroft, with Richmond looking increasingly unlikely to place a bid on the midfielder at No. 1 in this month’s national draft.
It was always going to happen.
Blair 'Give us your 1st pick otherwise we will Bid on him and screw you over"
That's why we got pick 20 for a stack of late picks.

Yeah like l posted ,lm sure they have many meetings throughout the year on player's ,but Blair balances the books in positions and the cap.

On the bidding for Ashcroft issue. If we bid for him what do we lose? What do Brisbane then give up by matching our bid? What do Brisbane give up if no-one bids on Ashcroft in the first round?
Teams are reluctant to bid because they generally don’t gain much by doing it. For example, all our picks are currently before pick 25. When the bids come in, picks in the late 20s, 30s and 40s will disappear. That doesn’t help us in the least. Why waste energy on this?

On Murphy Reid:
McGowan "This masthead has consistently ranked Reid lower than other outlets based off recruiters’ concerns, including but not limited to his lack of size and speed"
Sheehan "A midfielder-forward who has speed to burn which allows him to burst away from congestion and use the ball with precision."
lol wat?

Also, what goes around comes around. Clubs have a long memory.
It seems that unless a team really wants a player and feel they have a shot of landing the player with their bid, they don’t bid. That’s often the case until it starts getting a bit ridiculous. Hence Ashcroft is almost certainly a top 3 pick could go without a bid until pick 4. It’s at that point that it starts getting farcical.

Hard to see how they would be involved in discussions on pick 2 unless they may look at dropping back to 6 with a sweetener if they thought they would definitely get Draper there.

Maybe the aim is for us to have pick 2, North 4 and the crows 6 but that would involve us trying to give some sort of compensation to two clubs? North get 4 and 20 for 2, Adelaide 6 and 23 for 4 ....

Don't really like it
I think the article was suggesting that Adelaide had been discussing p.2 with North independently of us, not as part of a three way deal. Presumably they want to get ahead of Carlton if they are worried about them taking Draper. Might involve Adelaide's F2, which North could then try to sell (alongside their own F2) to get into the end of this year's first round. Would we be interested with 23 or 24? Maybe if we didn't have a better offer on the table.

Well technically "slow" is still a speed I guess.

We should get at least one KPF, probably another KPP of some sort but still think we concentrate on mids & a classy crumber or two this draft & pull the trigger on the talls next draft when there's supposed far better prospects in that regard.

Looks like the old handshake agreement is alive and well.
No other plausible explanation for not selecting Ashcroft with our first pick. He’s a clear #1.
And don’t throw up the $30k bonus a player receives for being #1. as the club wouldn’t give a rats ass about that.
NAB pick 1 bonus is $10k not $30K. After old mate tax man takes his nibble it barely amounts to loose change over the course of an elite players career.
Put the extra meedjia heat n hype on the Brisvegas kid, he's easily good enough for the 1 selection n just quietly go about our rebuilding business without the extra bit of song n dance.

There is an article in the age today which amongst other things says

No.1 draftees previously scored a $10,000 NAB portfolio, but that was last awarded two years ago, with Telstra taking over the sponsorship and the prize yet to be determined.

It also says that Harley Reid did not get a cash payment last year

One Whitlock & Faull would be a great start, I also like Sims for that third tall vacancy.
I mentioned him before, but I rate this kid ahead of Sim. His got a few tricks and will fill out even more.

He strikes me as a ruck in that Maric/Nankervis mould, I think he's capable as a cameo man up forward but can't see him developing into a true power forward.

Blokes like Ashcroft n Daicos are easily ranked as best pick in the draft, yet so called reluctance to waste 30 seconds calling them inevitably results in their clubs getting them far cheaper than just the 20% discount. Guess fans n clubs should then just STFU instead of spending years moaning about how unfair the F/S or academy systems are n how much advantage is gained by some clubs.

The only time a club " wants " a player or " feels they're a genuine chance " of landing one of these types is by over rating and bidding for them way ahead of expectation. Extremely rare stupidity is gunna see that happen.
