2024 Draft Thread

Does anyone think too much emphasis is placed on the combine results in discussions? I think one round of testing once for the year is not necessarily a true representation of a player's athletic ability. For example being held so close to the end of the season maybe some players are more fatigued than others or having played finals coming in to it with a niggle or two. I personally am vary wary of using these to discount players and put much more emphasis on what they've shown on the ground throughout the season.
The combine is more of an AFL thing to keep the hype going. All the kids wear a GPS which the clubs have full access to so they know exactly endurance and speed capabilities. At best it is good reinforce what they already know.

Look at Jagga and his spin here:

His pickup and weighting of his kick:

Really does remind me of Cotchin and Bolton.
It's funny, the more I watch the more I see a star. And most of the time his eyes are forward. His first few steps are lightning and his sideways movement the same.

I did see him fumble once.

Surely he can transfer this sort of play to AFL level?

Yeah I don't get it also. Surprised how he's rated as imo he's easily pick 1 material. For where our list is at the moment I think we need a Zac Butters type more than a DeGoey or Heeney type. Jagga is more of a foundation type footballer whereas the other 2 are the cream.

If we can get pick 2 Lets go for the Lalor Smith combo

Im no expert - but these 6 names seem to appear at the top in nearly every ranking Ive seen
  • FOS
  • Lalor
  • Jagga
  • Langford
  • Draper
  • Smillie

But its not unanimous - sometimes these names in the top 6 as well...
  • Tauru
  • Armstrong
  • Murphy Reid
  • Travaglia
  • Hotton

I was all in on trading for pick 2, but looking at this list of 11 players.... I want 4 of them.

If the modus is to minimise risk then you take Smith & Langford, O'Sullivan is really being rated on last year's output, Lalor comes with a few question marks with soft tissue injuries & endurance. The problem however is we don't get the speed we desperately need. It's actually a really difficult decision and one which I wouldn't be taking lightly but given this is the first draft of the rebuild i would probably just get my Cotchin (Smith) and grab Langford who will be a Tiger for life in all likelihood.

But the real solution here is to package 10 & 11 and move up to the FOS, Lalor range and grab one speedster. This approach almost guarantees 3 core players.
Bully you got any information about Zaydyn Lockwood 198cm KD from Bendigo Pioneers part of our academy. His had a consistent year

Jagga is No1 for me, a safe bet, leadership, professional, its a no brainer, its the safest pick, you are going to get a great long term player with him.

If FOS or Lalor are better than this guy, then they are pretty darn attractive options.

The historical benefit to trading for Pick 2 is that the draft pick after Richmond's first pick is always a gun

Smart way to beat the system

RICHMOND MUST GET IT RIGHT!

No *smile* Sherlock.

No *smile* Sherlock is an excellent expression that sadly has fallen out of the modern lexicon...along with piffing yonnies and bulk ace

I commend you on your Australian English language expression

We can match a bid here can't we? That's a free hit because it will come after our picks. I don't mind a developing key defender on the books.

There's so many unknowns that sometimes the obvious choice is staring at you right in the face. I think we would look more stupid if Smith turns out to be a gun because he played right under our noses. And let's be honest here, his performances are virtually peerless from a draftee perspective. I cannot think of any other player who had the same impact as Jagga in the VFL. I think there's a lot of hypothesing surrounding O'Sullivan & Lalor but most of that is from a diminished sample size and contains quite a few assumptions related to fitness & injury risk. If we want to get this right then the best path forward is some level of conservatism, Francis Jackson has never been one to get carried away by the flavour of the month in any case. I'm pretty sure he understands the importance of making these top 5 picks count.
