2024 Draft Thread

It was definitely reported We tried to get Lalor and Smillie to play VFL but it didn't work out, can't remember the reason, probably injury with Lalor.
Lalor was 17,l never found anything that allows 17 year olds to play VFL,,all l found was you have to be 18 and over .
Also he was involved in his school football.

I've never had him out of the discussion. It's a clear top three and I'm ok with all of them, no glaring weaknesses and vastly differnet skill sets. I'm ok with Lalor because I think he has the best mix but if we called Jags, I'm fine, same with FOS.
If the modus is to minimise risk then you take Smith & Langford, O'Sullivan is really being rated on last year's output, Lalor comes with a few question marks with soft tissue injuries & endurance. The problem however is we don't get the speed we desperately need. It's actually a really difficult decision and one which I wouldn't be taking lightly but given this is the first draft of the rebuild i would probably just get my Cotchin (Smith) and grab Langford who will be a Tiger for life in all likelihood.

But the real solution here is to package 10 & 11 and move up to the FOS, Lalor range and grab one speedster. This approach almost guarantees 3 core players.

And Bungal had to warm his bedtime milk up that night and tuck him in while reading his PRE posts to him to nod off to.

Being serious, I don't think VFL would've changed much with Lalor, we know he can physically compete at that level. It's more about what he projects into after 24 months in the AFL system. I think the De Goey comp is pretty close. You'd like to speed up the time it took JDG to become an A grader with Lalor. But I'm confident that Lalor isn't the DH that young JDG was and that will help immensely. And again, don't forget he hasn't done a serious under 18's preseason let alone an AFL preseason. It would be a very modified program in the first 4 months for him to prevent overload.

Not injured they were tied to other clubs so we're either not eligible or blocked for our VFL side

I see Jagga as our Cotchy replacement- elite captain material that will just keep winning the ball back and by shear force willing the team on to win.

He is my No 1 pick, safe as houses and will become our new leader of the midlfield. If we can pull of a Jagga with a Lalor or FOS combo I will be ecstatic.
I reckon he is our Prestia replacement to be honest

In so many FOS highlights it's Jagga who gets it to him.

I've only started watching some videos - too busy to watch junior footy so only got "highlights" packages to watch.. So question re: Langford...does he have a right foot?
His left hoof looks pretty hefty but haven't seen much to say he's dual sided. For a bloke who's not quick (but agile as others have said) any chance he's not going to be as damaging when people try take his favoured foot from him? If he's one sided, I wouldn't be entertaining any discussion of him in the 1-2 picks, but obviously later or if hes good on his right as well, this would change.

What will they modify his Donut intake?

I like the idea of a combination of a swing for the fences pick (Lalor or FOS) paired with a safe pick (Jagga or Langford).

Does anyone think too much emphasis is placed on the combine results in discussions? I think one round of testing once for the year is not necessarily a true representation of a player's athletic ability. For example being held so close to the end of the season maybe some players are more fatigued than others or having played finals coming in to it with a niggle or two. I personally am vary wary of using these to discount players and put much more emphasis on what they've shown on the ground throughout the season.
Yeh, way overdone. Ideally you see a good tank from your mids.

And nothing disastrous in terms of athletic profile from any of your other selections.

Langfords risk factor as you say is that his speed doesn't allow him to play enough midfield minutes. Could become a Langford at Essendon type, as a mid size forward. Probably his floor there you'd think.
If you find the ball and use it well enough you cannot be ignored. He was top ten in the 2k time trial (6.24), much more important than being 0.1 or 0.15 of a second quicker over 20m. Having a step/good balance/agility can cover fro lack of staright line speed IMO.

Crazy talk to say he will not play midfield because of a slowish 20m time. The ability to work from contest to contest is what defines ability to play midfield.

Cam Rayner cannot play midfield because he has never (can never?) develop the endurance. Personally I'd be more worried if Langford ran a 7.24 2k time trial.

Never seen a player with a better resume get talked down on these boards more. So weird.
The kid will probably just keep producing for the next decade for whichever team has the brains to select him. And in a decade posters will look back and wonder how they missed it.
