2024 Draft Thread

They will still trade for more points I reckon.
Player trades are already done, so they'd have to trade for points. Ashcroft just about wipes them of all their current points, so a pick at around 15 would leave them needing to scrounge up roughly another 750 points to match after the 20% discount. Roughly the value of a pick 25, pity we sold the reigning premiers so many extra points cheaply. They'll still get both Ashcroft n Marshall easy.
Ahh well. Guess I'll just have to sit back quietly n watch the first night of the draft. Hope we pick Ashcroft at 1.

That’s why Langford is being talked about as a top 5 pick.

Does he last to 6?

if there are no other picks traded almost certainly - yes.

melbourne are the only chance of taking him before 6.

In fact if melbourne aren't keen on him he could be there at 10.

last thing st kilda want is another slow
mid.

We are super keen on him. Question is how keen? Do we have him higher than FOS? IMO we have Lalor at 1.

I think Lalor, FOS & Langford are out top 3. Just depends on the order.

With this draft been so strong and 2025 rumoured to be shallow , I hope we go hard at this draft and don’t trade much into next years.

I wonder if we have much intrest in Davidson ? Maybe someone will come with a future 1st and a 30ish for our 18ish , letting us take Davidson , that’s if we have any intrest in him, more chance of hoping he get to the rookie draft I’m guessing
Doubt we are picking him with any of the top 20 picks we have. Suspect if we want him it will be as a rookie. I suspect he will go to another team with a late pick in the main draft unless we get back some junk picks for trading into next year

Maybe. Personally can't see any way we would be considering him at 1.

Is the speculation we're keen on him because we think he'll be there at 6? And some others won't be?

We are very good at keeping who we like in house, especially drafting so not taking it to the bank.

I guess it all depends on what we expect the Roos to do at no.2 (if they keep it) and Dees to do at no.5

If they both go for talls there is every chance we have the choice of Reid/Langford/Smith at no.6

This is assuming we take Lalor at no.1, Carlton take FOS and Adelaide take Draper.

It's what we think Melbourne and North will do in particular which will determine whether we make a play for pick 2 or not IMO.

Reckon it's a toss-up between Langford and Draper for Carlton once we take Lalor and FOS. Say Carlton go Draper, which I favour they will, then Adelaide is choosing between Langford, Jagga and maybe Smillie. They are small enough in the midfield but let's say they go Jagga. Now Melbourne is choosing between Langford and Smillie. I don't see how anyone could have Smillie ahead, but let's say they do. Then Norf take Tauru and it's St Kilda with two picks. They might not want another slow mid but where are the quick ones? Reid? Lindsay?

It's not unpossible that Langford gets to 10 but I think it's more likely he goes top-5.

Unless we take him as part of a 1-2 punch, I wont be surprised if, through no real fault of his own, Jagpipes becomes a slider.

He'd fit with St.Kilda and Lyon's absolute demand that players run all game long.

I have him much higher than that, but its hard to see how he fits for a few clubs.

Yep, I have him at St Kilda.

Hypothetically, without any other changes, the draft order looks like this:

Pick #1 Richmond (Lalor)
Pick #2 Richmond (O'Sullivan)

Pick #3 Carlton (Draper)
Pick #4 Adelaide (Smith)
Pick #5 Melbourne (Armstrong)
Pick #6 Richmond (Langford)
Pick #7 St Kilda (Reid)
Pick #8 St Kilda (Lindsay)
Pick #9 Melbourne (Smillie)
Pick #10 North Melbourne (Tauru)

The obvious club that could ruin this is St Kilda. Losing Battle might mean they couldn't pass on Tauru if he was available.

Other than a possible selection by the Saints, I can see either Armstrong or Tauru slipping through to pick #10.

PS: I've excluded Trainor for now ... I think the risk is too great for a club to take him until at least into the 20s.
This board looks real good, I reckon, #8.

On the board in general, I include as little as possible of my ratings. I don't care what I think. I've tried to get us started on a board we can nail down through our shared mail and reasoning. A collaboration. (Interwebz. Hive mind.)

Some of us think we've got Lalor and FOS nailed down at 1, 2. There's a lot of mail and scuttlebutt around to that effect. (Not my mail. But a poster on this thread and some others elsewhere.) But some credible mail and then just lots of smoke. (spook seems quite confident of FOS at #2. I've been wondering about Langford.)

Draper is logical at #3 because many think he can walk into Carlton as a high HF and contribute early. (Redford is on this and Leysy would be too. Not to mention the rusted on Draper fans - a shout out, comrades!) He can overlap with Cripps generation. Very logical.

I had mail a couple of weeks back that Smith was right on Adelaide's agenda. (Not on RFC's.) But there could be another. My take is that it'll be Smith but other than Smith I have nothing.

There is scuttlebutt about Taylor and Armstrong. Tigerdell has posted elsewhere that St Kilda is the threat to Taylor. That looks right. So, yes. Armstrong is firming at #5. (If Taylor really wants Tauru Thursfield has *smile* Christmas and will be beaten with sticks. And he'll cop Armstrong.)

You've posted the first board with the Top 5 in a new shape with sound reasoning. I reckon this is our board atm. This looks a very logical board that I think is something we can get agreement on. Premises good. Reasoning sound.

Top 5 of your board is favourite IMEstimation. It's a permutation of 5 from a field of say 80 (watch out for the new Trent Croad!) so it's a *smile* tough nut to crack.

If RFC keeps #6 I would think Langford a certainty here if 1-5 is right. It could be 6 straight. We don't know if we'll get away with keeping #6. In the scenario that we do keep it and still get #2. (Outsider at this stage IMO.)

If you've got the next four right you're a genius. What's your thinking there? You've got the ball rolling on the picks after Langford.

Best available for at least the first 6 picks , definitely no just taking a doofus early because his tall , plus the strike rate of early talls living up to expectations is even less .

Hopefully with our hand will get 3 or 4 genuine mids , including a couple who like kicking goals and a couple who run both ways fkn hard , also a couple of outside elite ball users with genuine pace , I’d also personally love a genuine classy goal kicking small forward. Yes it would be nice to get a potential star key forward , I just don’t want to risk one costing us a genuine on baller .

This.

We've cleared enough cap space to buy the talls we want when we need them. We can afford to let others take the risk of drafting and developing enough tall doofi to reveal the few who'll cut it at AFL level. And then we'll swoop in with a fistful of $$$ and an emerging list of superstar mids to feed them sweet, sweet leather on the lead.

Draft smalls, buy talls. You know it makes sense.
